I bought my first washer in 1993 for $325.00. It had hot, warm, cold, regular, and delicate settings. maintained it, kept it clean. It lasted until I moved in 2020. I gave it away, working 100% and the saddest day of my appliance life. I bought a basic dryer for $290.00 a year later. He went with his sister. Best money ever spent. These new fangled washers and dryers are a headache and don't clean. They look really cool, though, but just get a basic good brand name, maintain them, and compliment their work, and they will last for 20 years plus. True story!

I had one of these (it came with the house because the seller didn't want to drag it back up the stairs, same reason it stayed with the house when I sold it). Aside from a failed bearing, it wasn't a bad washer. Now, you do need to load things like towels, sheets, and blankets a bit differently than if there's a center agitator. It's a better choice if you're an office worker than if you're doing something that leaves your clothes heavily soiled.

I don’t know why they still bother with top loaders in the US. You can’t really make a top loader efficient, they just aren’t, the way a top loader is designed to work is having the clothes full submerged, so the agitator can move them through the water, they are, what they are. I say, just make a proper one or don’t bother. Even front loaders are not as good as they used to be, back in the 60s,70s,80s and 90s. It’s all digital, wifi enabled and water saving now. It doesn’t increase the efficiency though because you end up having to do more, smaller loads to get anything clean because they use that little water (both versions of machine) in these new machines. Front loaders have always been better at cleaning clothes, especially with stains and because their drum didn’t fill all the way up meant that they could use a built in heater, to heat the water to a number of different temperatures to suit the laundry and for sanitation in some cases, which could be done in an acceptable amount of time. But regarding top loaders, they don’t work properly trying to make them more efficient because they just aren’t. Has to be a proper one, to clean clothes properly, if you’re gonna buy top load.

Bearings had to be replaced in mine every 2 years and I needed to buy special tools to do it. Bought a GE 5 years ago at half the price - it gets used a LOT more and not one issue

Funny looking at these top loaders that are common in the states I guess where copious amounts of water usage is no problem... Here in the Netherlands we only have front loaders that only use a fraction of the amount of water...

If the motor no longer spins it's likely the bulk capacitor finally died. Try replacing the capacitor and see if that does it 😊

In India we don't have an agitator washing machine, one brand that offers a more similar kind of agitator that is a whirlpool. The USA has the best washing machines in the world, considering the price of Indian top loads also offers reliability top loads like you may get it for 200-240 bucks In 7.5 kg, upto 9kg respectively

I had a newer one of those Whirlpool washers. If loaded correctly. IF. It would do a much better job cleaning clothes than the direct drive agitator unit it replaced. You had to spend time figuring out the optimal settings for every kind of load. It was painfully slow to fill, painfully slow to balance, and made all the lights flicker as the impeller started and stopped. After just over 2 years the lock mechanism broke. Constantly sending power to that busted lock mechanism to try and get it to work subsequently fried the control board. It did have a detergent dispenser which was nice...kind of...until you needed to use some other detergent (e.g. Woolite on delicate items). Then you had to remember to not only disable the dispenser, but then re-enable it for the next normal load. More trouble than it was worth!

Nobody in the history of the world has ever asked what the best washer is to replace parts on or to take to the scrap yard. I’m really interested in your response so what’s the best washer when it comes to reliability and getting the job done?

GE Commercial brand. Next would be Speed Queen. Both are not normally found in larger appliance places like Lowes, etc.; but they're the best working machines as far as cleaning the clothes. Otherwise, look for any older-model (even if 2nd-hand) that has a full-size agitator in it. They will also usually have a much better suspension system - not the rods; but the ... I call it the milk stool because it has three legs and is bolted to the chassis of the machine. They also have less of the computer boards in them that are almost guaranteed to be a mess in a very short time.

I've heard Bosche and Miele tend to have the fewest number of service calls however statistically that could be due to lower numbers purchased

I have a Whirlpool washer and dryer. ( has an agitator ) but does not have a 757 jet instrument panel. Just a plain Jane and works fine. 4 years old.
