I can't remember the last time I used gloss. Still good to know though Phil. Keep these reviews going - really interesting. There is so much innovation going on in the decorating world right now, it's a job to keep up with all the new brands and products, but equally you don't want to get left behind. You can teach an old dog new tricks, if he's willing to learn. Not like the good/bad old days! Keep up the good work Phil, great channel.

Albany is best high gloss finish, BUT it does run for a long time so can catch you out if you think you have no runs, turn your back and the runs return with a vengeance. Once it’s dried the high gloss and finish are superior to other water based gloss paints I’ve used.

I have tried many water based paint to get the finish I need I agree with wackokid Johnstones aqua Gloss/ Satinwood came out the best. I always make sure I have a pot of water just to keep the brush fresh while I am painting for cills or large Surfaces wipe over first with a slightly dam cloth before painting just makes a really nice finish. Clean up brushes when finally finished with fairy liquid as aqua can be a bit demanding on brushes. Finish is superb for a water based ..

@ProfessionalPainterDecorator

It's not too bad for Brush Marks, a splash of water can hep if you feel it a bit thick and brush marks are forming.. also.. depends on type of brush used. The Satin is good too. Have you seen the newer videos using Isomat.. what do you think of that paint?

Hi Phil interesting video I’ve noticed with wb glosses the sheen level drops a bit after a couple of weeks , in time the majority of customers will accept the lack of high sheen levels and wb will become the norm but certainly good to do comparison between various manufacturers,

Is hybrid the way forward though?
@rogerbell123
@rogerbell123 2 года назад
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator unfortunately I think it probably is, I’m not a fan of hybrids I used the jonnos one on my lounge 3 coat system and I’m noticing it’s going yellow and fading not as quick as oil but still not good, water based is the way forward but it’s with compromises which are out of our control, the industry has changed dramatically in the past few yrs mainly for the good in my opinion but we as a trade are being used as un paid testers and guinea pigs for the paint companies we have all probably noticed changes when using the same paint from one job to the next.

@@rogerbell123 give the Isomat Isolac Gloss and it's primer UC a go. It's not hybrid but a nice finish... A compromise has to be found somewhere.

Like the video.👍 My go to paint been using this for a very long time(7/8 years) Tried all the others imo nothing gets close. To be honest Imo any proper water based paint is always better with a undercoat and two top coats. You can get three coats done on a day if you want to Also it don't go yellow like jonnos gloss and Benjamin Moore gloss and others.

Great video...quick question if you could help....I had pine doors to paint at my parents house and used zinsser bin as the undercoat and 2 coats of a oil based satinwood on top... the house has 2 more doors left to paint in the extension which was glossed white. If I want to paint satinwood over the 2 gloss doors which are now yellowish can I just paint satinwood on top or would I need to use/buy more zinsser bin first or is another process best to paint satinwood over old gloss?
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
No, give them a wash down and a sand ... The oil satinwood or oil eggshell is self undercoating so just give them two coats of your chosen paint.

I appreciate this thanks, not used this gloss before and was considering it for my own place (how often do decorators really want to paint their own place? haha) On the previous place I actually just used 1 coat of shellac straight over the top of the old oil-based gloss (no sanding because everything was in great condition anyway) then 1 coat of Colour Trends hybrid gloss (Irish brand) and Ill be honest, it had a high sheen, stayed white and took an absolute battering from me brining my tools in an out all the time and must have had it on 5 years before moving out and it was still in great shape. I do have some test pots of the Bedec actually so I might give it a quick test before committing to it. Only thing I would say is you are looking for better quality paints and still keeping with a cheap brush haha Go try a Corona Kingston or Excalibur and see the difference ;) Thanks again, much appreciated ^_^

Great Feed Back. I do keepon top of decorating at my house.. the wife loves it lol I don't think there's any need to be using shallac as a 1st coat over 'old/previous' painted woodwork... there's some great waterbased grip primers around now that will give you the adhesion. Check out he videos using Isomat I've done recently. The brush I use from Wickes is an awesome brush to use, ideal with water based. It's not a cheap/cheap brush like the Lidl ones on another video.

When painting using the bedec water base gloss, over an existing gloss door , do you still have to use the undercoat or primer or can you give the door bit of sand the go straight using the bedec gloss, many thanks
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator 2 года назад
I'd advise to always give it the correct Uc, and work from that with the two top coats. That way you've started the correct waterbase system and less likely to encounter a problem. Same with F&B, use the their Uc over existing paints... Then two top coats. You fond the coverage is a lot better.
