Chinese martial arts are often classified in several different ways. They may be divided into categories such as internal vs external, hard vs soft, or even northern vs southern. While these descriptions may have some validity, they fall short of truly explaining the origins of the arts.
A better way to categorize Kung Fu would be using the three terms of Formation, Melee, and Dueling. All Chinese Martial Arts can be roughly put into one of these three categories. Knowing what category your particular style falls into may help you understand what your art was originally developed for and why it uses the tactics and techniques that it does.
in this video, I give a brief explanation of the three categories and give an example of a Kung Fu style that fits into each of them. Enjoy!
