Pike is a weird trash fish, it tastes ok, its large so you would assume alot of meat. BUT! It got a billion bones so if you dont fillet it first, you gonna eat the fish in anger. Filleting it is a art aswell that i cant do.
Pike are an invasive species here in central Europe but very fun to fish. It's normal to find it on the menu. I had plenty of it in my childhood. It may be a thrash fish in some other countries, I can't argue with that. On the other hand I've eaten boneless fish caught in SE Asia that was absolutely disgusting.
Yeah you'll definitely never see it on the menu of a 5-star restaurant lol. And I don't think anyone would ever choose pike over bass, trout, or salmon, lol. My family would always eat it if they caught it, but it definitely is a royal pain to pick through the bones. IMO its best filleted into bite size chunks so there's no bones, battered, then fried.
@@chad1755 the normal way of preparing it here in northem sweden is just to grind it into fish patties and make it like fish burgers with boiled potatos and butter. its a decent meal, but i would not eat pike like fillet style unless i was tricked into it, it unironically tastes like watery dirt with a hint of fish. easiest way to prepare it is just to do what you can to carve away as much meat as possible , grind it with spices and atleast then it will taste decent cause the spices hides the terrible fish
Northern pike where I live in the Yukon is delicious. From cold clean water. You just need to learn how to fillet it properly and with some practice it’s easy to take out all the bones. There are some videos on RU-vid that can teach you
