The BEST way to give a DIY woodworking gift

It’s great to make a DIY gift, but it’s even better if you can wrap it by adding a homemade bow. I used wood and special techniques to create my own present bow out of wood. It adds the perfect finishing touch to those workshop gifts woodworkers like to make during the holiday season. This video goes over a lot of woodworking techniques ranging from box making to joinery to wood bending. I highly recommend giving this woodworking project a shot. It’s the perfect project to push yourself out of your comfort zone.

New subscriber here. You've got some great stuff! I've worked with wood for about 28 years now, more now since I retired about 2.5 years ago. It's always a pleasure to see another quality RU-vid craftsman out there. Keep up the great work.

Super nice! You could probably make a pretty special bow with the shavings using a block plane.

Oh absolutely. I can picture it. I should have put shavings in the box.

That's what I thought he was going to do when I saw the vid - I just watched another vid where the guy was taking off these long, thin (but wide), naturally curled shavings with a large hand plane. I thought he was going to plane down a board, pick his curlies, and make bows out of that. 🤔

Such a great idea. I have a bunch of shavings from planing a piece of walnut. I might try this with some of that.

Beautiful box! I appreciate how you comment that it takes trial and error to get the bow the way you like. It gives me encouragement in my woodworking since I feel like to get satisfactory results in my woodworking is frequently a trial and error process. Many woodworking videos edit out the errors making it look like every project goes so smoothly without mistakes and frustration. I appreciate your honesty. Also, I love how the box lid had grain matching with the sides. I know how to get matching grain on sides of the box, but I wish you had commented for people like me with less skill how you get the lid to grain match. Thanks, I appreciate your videos!

I'm going to write it down for a future video. It's one of those things I don't think about and just do the work. It's rare that I film something and decide to cut it out of the video. I'm far from perfect and want to be honest.

Just out of curiosity, what if you were to put some dye in the water while you soaked the strips? That way, you could make any color bow.
@NewtonMakes
@NewtonMakes 6 месяцев назад
You're hitting on a creative path. If you put it in the water, the dye would be faint. But you can dye them after they dry.

Beautiful work, Billy! Really amazing idea!!! 😃 I've seen some contraptions made out of steel pipe and that used a torch for the heat... I don't know, but I guess I'm going to make one of those! Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊 And happy holidays!

I didn't want to break out the torch and find a pipe the correct size but that's a really popular method. 👊👍

Looks amazing billy must say when seen u saying u were doing a bow first thing a thought was ash and sycamore (pretty sure sycamore and poplar are same things?🤔) Turned out amazing 👏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍
@NewtonMakes
@NewtonMakes 6 месяцев назад
I'm not sure how ash would bend but white oak is fantastic for bending and has similar properties. Sycamore isn't a poplar. It lives a really long time and has leafs that look like maple. Because of the density and color of the wood I can see why they could be looked at as similar. I'm using a bunch of it right now on a scroll saw project. 👍
@michaelwillson6847
@michaelwillson6847 6 месяцев назад
@@NewtonMakes fair enough I will test out ash and let u no how it bends. Sycamore is one of my go to woods I love it think it's beautiful. Chestnut aswell if you can ever get hold of it. But yea a would of been mistaken for thinking poplar and sycamore was the same. Learn sommit new. 🤔🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍

Why would a thinner blade be any different than a full kerf? If you're just ripping thin strips I can't see a benefit.
@NewtonMakes
@NewtonMakes 6 месяцев назад
It saves a lot of material. I'm using a circular saw blade that's half the width of a full kerf blade.
@ifiwooddesigns

Seems like way too much work. I’d rather plane and use the shavings instead. May not be as durable but it’s quicker and maybe use a sealer or hardener to stiffen it up. 🤷🏻‍♂️
@NewtonMakes
@NewtonMakes 6 месяцев назад
Nothing wrong with that method. I'd recommend epoxy or ca glue to add rigidity.
