THE best way to improve your photography 

Nobody gives me more motivation to take pictures.

Great video as always. Thank you. I don't have a current project, but one thing I've focused on over the years when walking around towns is stickers - the weird little things people stick to lamppost or signs or whatever - they seem to be everywhere and sometimes are really funny or timely. Might be fun to go to town and consider them a proper photographic project. Thanks for the idea!

I recently found that I took better photographs if I considered the shot well, before taking it rather than rushing it. And having a pre-considered project gave me the motivation to go out and do it. This not only improved my photography but my enjoyment of it too.

I did a sort of project of abstract shapes in Glasgow based on your abstracts in London video a few years back. I took pictures of building closeups, under bridges, bike stands, gate patterns etc. It was a good fun to do and really trained my eye to look for something different. Great video Craig, look forward to the next one.

I have found that I love making books out of my projects. My nature is to shoot everything that catches my eye, but then I have difficulty finding coherent ideas for a collection. With a project and sufficient time, such as my year-long study of hands, I can assemble a photo book to keep and enjoy. Your advice on projects will a big help for me. Thanks.

I find myself weirdly attracted to photographing bins while out and about anywhere; much to my wife's absolute delight of course :)

To your “you’re welcome,” I say “thank you!” I am currently researching my grandfather’s architectural firm (1900-1953’ish) in order to catalog and photograph many of the building that still exist. I hope to learn more about my grandfather and improve my architectural photography at the same time. Thanks again for the great video.

I have an ongoing project (however chiche it may seem) photographing lighthouses, especially in monochrome and long exposure.

Current Project? All windmills in Dithmarschen (my new home) that still have their vanes (so actually look like windmills, even if not functional anymore), shot with my 4x5 large format camera with pinholes on Kodak Ektar 100 - and blue sky. I hope to have shot them all (15 windmills, even though one has lost its vanes this year and has to be rebuild, and the shots I've made last year don't really fit). One of these is a project in itself, as it can be shot from several vantage points. Sounds easy? Well, with those still functional, wind direction has to be taken into account, too! Some can't be shot from the right angle without entering fenced private property (at least not the way I want it). I hope to have them all at least once the way I want them sometimes next year. This is actually my first real project after over 30 years of amateur photography that I might finish at some point …

Super advice! Definitely inspired me when I subscribed to E6. During Covid I too focussed on details while re-walking the same streets and areas….door knockers, chimney pots, house names, discarded face masks…etc.etc. I targeted producing a one off copy of one photo book,which friends found fascinating( which also gave me motivation) I can definitely confirm that this is really very good advice on the Best way to improve your photography, plus improve your observational skills. I'm doing a CFP (Crap Film Project). Using very cheep 120 film which has small holes in the emulsion, micro scratches and other defects. I'm shooting the oldest stuff around town and using software to make the print look antique (ish) . Printed out as triptychs. Houses, Railroad, Old (long closed) Milton Collage buildings farms and barns.

HaHa! Extremely good advice. AND I do thank you! Last September I photographed the Oregon coast for 10 days with one lens. Sony's 18-135 F-3.5, 5.6 APS-C lens. Thrilled.

Craig, if you're worried about people turning up at your house, don't show photos from around your local area! Have you ever seen what this guy does with photos from random locations like in ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-anwekmk9UPY.html ? 😆 Anyway, yes, agree about the benefit of projects. I never really undertook any "real projects" but yeah, thinking of how to photograph a known location over and over with some variation already serves the purpose of personal development. (Luckily, I live close to a great location - Tempelhofer Feld in Berlin which offers so many different aspects for photography.)

Seeing I live in a very ruel, Ukrainian farming community in Western Manitoba, Canada, (1) shoot pre-rubber tired tracker farming equipment; (2) there are many Ukrainian Catholic/Orthodox Churches in the countryside. (3) remaining grain elevators. Thanks for the encouragement.

I'd be horrible at doing photography as a business. If I sold my images for use in a magazine I'd certainly get snookered, I wouldn't even know where to begin with pricing and the like.

whata great idea

I set a challenge for myself a couple years back during COVID times to shoot the 4 different seasons at 4 different locations in my city (basically 1 season per 1 location) and wanted to finish it in one year. I was hoping to make a collage out of it and print it big (basically 4 photos side by side in portrait orientation, totalling a 3:2 aspect ratio) but I still have not finished it to this day and sort of just abandoned it since I couldn't finish in one year. I did manage to get 3 of 4 shots, but 1 (winter) proved to be too difficult as I wanted specific elements in the scene. Before I knew it, that winter was done and there was no picture to be had. I should probably pick it up again and re-shoot the other seasons as well at their respective locations, but this time, over the course of the next few years. It was probably too restrictive on my part, but hey, it did motivate me to go out locally and take walks during COVID restrictions. I do have an ongoing "project" which is to take better and better pictures of my family, so I'm constantly trying out new ways to take pictures of them with no end in sight! Thank you though, as you got me thinking about more projects again!

This is inspiring. I really am a very part time photographer and often wonder how I could make better use of the little time I spend taking pictures. I think this is a great idea as most of the time I find myself (if ever) simply taking photos in passing or when something catches my eye (should I actually have a camera on me) rather than seeking something out. Simple solution to a frustrating problem... thanks.

Very fine video. My last 'real' project was shoting trains at night combining motion blur and steady objects. I spent about 12 nights on different location sometimes only 2 meters away from the tracks. I have another project started mondane at home and your video wll increase my motivation to restart it.

I forgot, these subjects will be shot with colour/b&w film and digital.

An ongoing project is whenever I visit a church I make a picture of the organ. And inspired by your vlog I started with an alley project in in the city of Utrecht.

Living in one of the older cities in the United States, I’ve started photographing cemeteries and grave stones. From former slaves to the wealthy they are sometimes works of art. Plus the names and dates, some dating back to the 1600’s is fascinating

For a few years now I have photographed Church doors, one of my all time favourite shots is of the partially open door of a ruined church about 2 miles from home, This has the effect of making you wonder what is beyond, My local Pub has a print of it on their wall in the main bar

I have an ongoing project with busshelters. So far I've photographed 24 different types in the area where I live. I don't walk away from a good reflection either or derelict houses.

Always good to have a project on the go. I currently have “ a seat with a view” similar to yours on the go, also, when I am travelling abroad I always look to shoot a photograph with someone holding an umbrella in a 16:9 format.

And you said to take photos in your area and you were spot on. i didn't realise how many great photos i missed in my own area.There were some great Compositions just waiting to be photographed. And i photographed a lot of subjects in my area.Great idea to have a project i think i'll photograph Street art and Murals.When i'm out of inspiration i watch your previous videos. Thank you.

Great content - thank you for sharing. I have one ongoing project I call ‘the mountain within’ where I photograph ‘mountains’ that I see in things like veins in stone or wood. Sometimes mountains reveal themselves in architectural subjects.

Omg! I don’t believe it! I have started a project recently, I only use my Bronica SQa film camera, (square format, b&w) BUT I take a small digital camera with me just in case. The project is church interiors and the camera is a Ricoh GRiii. I hope I haven’t subliminally copied you Craig! I’ve just bought a Mamiya Press Super 23 6x9 and am thinking of a few project ideas for this camera so thanks for the inspiration (crossing of my ideas list cathedrals, flyovers, English heritage properties. Oh and Craig please don’t come to Suffolk and do windmills - thanks in advance!

Excellent video as usual. I live very close to a National Trust property, and for the last decade, I have been taking photographs of the parkland from the same or similar positions on a regular basis. Throughout the seasons and in all types of weather. The amazing thing is that just when you think you have run out of options, a new one appears. I now have a complete album of very different photographs that display the changes that have occurred over time. It really does open your eyes.

OK, is that a vinyl album sleeve in the background? If so, who is/are the artist(s)? My failing eyesight can't make out the title.

Criminally underrated yt channel!

I have a couple of projects. One is shooting the things people have on the dash of their cars, and another is taking pictures of things in house windows - not looking into their rooms or lives, just what they have on the sill or hanging in the window. The nice thing is that they both can be added to almost anywhere I am.
