Join Mrs C. and her science class as they plant Avocado trees. I think I referred to the storm as hurricane Ida but I meant to say Ian.

Kerri, I will get an update, I am very good friends with Mrs. C. Also we are well outside the cone of this storm so aside from 4 days of rain and some wind we'll be good. And no, Tommy is not in Mrs. C's class but his school is bordered by avocado groves on 3 sides and a row crop field on the 4th side 🤣

Hi Tom I haven’t missed any of your videos and continue to learn from you. I have Fuerte avocado tree that’s doing great! Avocados are growing right now. I purchased a grafted Reed avocado tree and it’s 2 foot high. It made it through our heat wave in San Diego CA. It’s been doing good under my Fuerte tree. I want to plant this little tree in the ground but not sure when the right time will be. Please give me your advice. Let it get taller, place it in sunlight, fertilize, plant in October or February?? Please let me know what’s best!! Thank you!

Tom Tomb, I like to wait until they are about chest high. at that point the are large enough to not be eaten by critters but still small enough to develop a strong root system so they don't blow over in the wind. I've heard great things about the Reed.

How do these grow so abundantly in the wild if nobody is there to stick toothpicks into the seeds? I’d like to see a video about just planting straight into the soil without all this extra procedure. Will that work as well?

they don't grow abundantly in the wild. they are almost 100% cultivated by humans. Also this toothpick method is just something fun, it's not necessary.

Hey Tom... how long does it usually take to see a sprout when you plant the avocado seed in the potting soil mix in the 1-2 gallon pot? Also, I have 4 of the Fantastic variety avocado trees, all are between 3-4' tall, and I'm going to try and sprout seedlings with the store bought Hass seeds so I can graft them to the seedlings. I'm in Atoka Oklahoma and it's going to be fun to see if I can grow my own avocados where they're NOT supposed to be grown...😅
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard Год назад
I've had them sprout in a week and had others take 90 days. Sometimes I've had them already sprouting when you open the avocado.
@Darkshizumaru
@Darkshizumaru Год назад
Average is roughly 40 days for sprouting avocado pits. I have one that was only a week to pop and sometimes it can take months. Essentially it needs constant moisture so cover that pot with a bit of plastic to keep the moisture in there and it'll help grow faster. Direct sew is kind of a risk, if that pit is just not viable nothing will happen no matter how good you take care of it. You'll know it's viable if it splits and you can see the embryo if it's surface sewn but if you buried it might be a long time before you now how it's looking. After 3 months you either have growth or probably wont. If nothing happens even with good watering and covering, start some like Tom shows in the video or you can do the plastic bag paper towel method to sprout them before sewing so you at least know the pit is going to grow for you. It doesn't actually help this kind of seed sprout better to direct sew because most the pit is food stores for the embryo which is within the pit out of sight till it cracks open. It's going to need air and moisture for the germination to happen, the soil is just a resting place till roots grow out of the embryo of the plant. All that nutrition is actually out of the reach, plus Avocados are very thirsty plants which is why they do so well in the water glass when other plants would drown. Lots of people do direct sew because it saves you having to transplant so if it works well for you that's awesome! Saves you some extra steps, but if it's difficult to get germination from your climate or what have you the glass and bag are really good for telling how much growth you have so there isn't that uncertainty.

@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard Год назад
Avocados love water. They just don’t like it every day. It’s better to give them a lot of water then let them drain for a few days and repeat. Since your plans were sitting in pots on watered they went through stress which is why they drop their leaves but I think if you keep caring for them as long as you see green there’s life and there’s hope and they will recover. Good luck
