I've adapted a variation on this for my own TTD list; it's not quite the same, but close. And it's already made a difference. Took me a week to start setting it up; after that, I've (re)started on three long-dormant tasks that I've had tucked away for a while - one of them for well over a year. Thanks!

Be careful when choosing to automate. The setup costs of automation are often greater than their benefit, especially if what you're automating away doesn't occur too often or doesn't take too long.

I feel like these types of to-do lists are manageable for personal life. At work, where I manage products and have several projects going, I go through a whole different flow. I spend 30 min on Monday setting goals and tasks for the week to achieve my quarterly goals and ultimately yearly goals. I prioritize what must get done this week and then log any new action items from meetings/ requests. Every morning I look through and quickly reprioritize the day if something urgent came up the day before. This has been working for me for years.

Anything that has more than one step is not an action, it's a project. And you can't 'do' a project, but if you're clear on the next action, then that's what you focus on. This is the factor that differentiates a good to-do list and a bad one. Have a great day!

Would you consider doing a whole video on automation? Someone below suggested it, too. Idk if this makes sense, but I understand the surface level concept of automation based on what you said in this video, and I've learned about some specific stuff like templates and Notion integrations from your other videos. However, I'm having a hard time connecting my conceptual understanding of automation to my practical understanding of it. This is especially true when it comes to figuring out what to automate and if certain tasks actually aren't worth it due to the time and energy required. Plus, it seems like the 4 Ds you described in this video can apply to either one-time tasks or recurring tasks, while automation can only apply to recurring tasks. That made it a bit of a challenge, for me, to see how it fits into something like processing your to-do list on a weekly basis.
@iannespatrus6956
@iannespatrus6956 3 года назад
Hey Thomas, great work! Really liked the video! A non-joke commentary, for a change. One addition I would do to the flow chart, that is specifically important for code development, is the cost of automation. I know you already have repeatable tasks in mind, but I really think adding something like "Is this task recurrent enough to automate?" would be neat! Hope you get your 6-digit book deal!

Love this guys. long time follower & also i have an appreciation for the corny puns and dad jokes. Don't sensor those!! As an adhder; they seriously impact my ability to actually finish the entire video without starting and stopping it 5times so in the end I just break up my attention so much that I never actually do things. It's a hilarious catch 22 and this video is worth watching to understand why!! Also would love to hear if there's any insight on how to take all these cool dreamy ideas and actually follow through with a brain like mine. I often try to implement these approaches and end up giving up because it doesn't work fast enough and i'm on to consuming another topic. anyways watch this guy!

Thanks for the video! Great, as always. And very close to my personal beliefs. My only concern, which is more about GTD itself rather than the video, is that if you follow GTD idea accurately, you end up being a person who does under-two-minute tasks the whole day. So the very first question I ask myself is 'Will it ever pop up again or has it already?'. If so, I delay for the sake of automation 🙃

To do list entropy? Even the heat death of the universe wouldn't shorten my list...😉🔥 You're right though, where most people, myself included, often get stuck is in the managing of the to do list. I find it helps to decide either way on an item and to do your best not to let it sit there undone and untethered. Either make a plan to get it done, intentionally save it for later, or just delete it.
