Warming up is a good thing, but doing this wrong can just set you up for failure when you actually start to make music. The problem I see a lot, is that people overdo it, end up tensing up, and then get discouraged! Don't warm up like that! Try this way :) It's the best way I've found to warm up!

Sounds like ... 1) Warm up 2) Record / practice repertoire 3) Instrument specific drills (voice, guitar, bass, keyboards, what have you)... Since you finished doing your stuff you're in a good position to do this and go only as far as currently safe for you I really like this, I have been using drills to warm up. I'm always farigued before attempting to actually play what I wanted to ... Also helps with one simple but important thing, if you need to go through drills to access that fast picking or high/low note, then maybe you are asking too much from yourself right now ... Too many big things (patience grass hopper, you'll get there later) Really appreciate this. This will help reduce fatigue and potential injuries. And also foster a sense of accomplishment since stuff actually got done !

Man, you gotta show that on a TED meeting so vocal teachers all over the world re-imagine their classic warm up exercises
@tillschulz7522

It does make so much more sense. It is what I did naturally (engaging musically,) but then classical education confronted me with all these mechanical exercises and nobody ever mirrored me in this way. So, for me watching this is worth it's watching time in gold. THANK YOU. Plus, I think that this channel generally encourages people to make all sorts of seemingly awkward experiments in order to discover their authentic musical selves.

This is good, thanks Chris. Those ascending scale fragments just kill my looseness and as you say, are a recipe for actually causing tension, the opposite of what I need.

Immensely enjoying your approach to singing. Thanks for putting this together. It's definitely a more natural and organic way to warm up and less boring than going up and down the piano, chasing scales like a lunatic. Scales matter but definitely not at this stage of warming up.

so this led to me doing some George Benson-esque scat improve with my guitar. Pretty flippin' darn cool tip! I always wondered why I felt fatigue with the old-school approach of warming up scales and arpeggios. (Which I still think are important for so many reasons.) I felt comfortable and warmed up in under 10 minutes.

Hey Chris, I like this video a lot as far as vocal warmup is concerned. My only thing is I don't play guitar so I was wondering if I just play this video daily and mimic the vocal sounds and riffs that you do. I was already doing that while watching this video. I've watched your other video on warming up and I just mimic what you do vocally there as well with a few improvisational riffs of my own for fun. Any suggestions? Cheers!!

haha... great question! I actually don't like terms exactly for that reason... too hard to keep track of things and we end up being more academic and less experiential. Have you joined my free course linked in the description yet? That'll give you a better idea of how I use "terms" for more than their standard benefit :)

Some good ideas there, thanks Chris. You don't have any particular relaxation methods that you use first, or is this enough?
@chrisliepe
@chrisliepe 5 лет назад
Thanks! This can be enough as long as you are mindful of what your body is doing just before you warmup and during your time of warming up. Picturing your body as completely relaxed and intentionally claiming and releasing any tension that creeps in is KEY to doing this right. I've been doing this, for example, and noticing that I am tensing my right hamstring when I try to hit higher notes. It's during those realizations that I have to claim the tension and then get rid of it and focus on the the feel of the sound coming out of my body. Hope this helps!

Hey Chris, is it okay to instead of doing licks, just doing chords and singing phrases with them? I'm a newb guitar player and I don't have the skills to do licks yet so I was wondering if that's okay too with my priority being warming up the voice and not so much the guitar playing (got a studio sesh tomorrow and gonna be singing a lot)

@chrisliepe

It’s important to be AWARE of where your tension is, and keep working to support properly with a mindset of rest and no tension! The more you sing and practice, the more natural things will become. Here’s a bit more about that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4MeLm-f8Uhs.html
