I'm the dev that wrote that! :D And yes, I loved Trainspotting and thought it was hilarious that this "unknown" actor Ewan McGregor was going to be Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Spamming the "hello" button would occasionally render the "Do you understand my language?" question which always made me and my brother crack up when Obi-Wan went straight back to saying "Hello" again lol!
@@ChaseMC215 and totally explains why Obi-Wan's voice actor was leaning more Scottish for this performance. Is this the closest we got to an official Star Wars x Trainspotting crossover?
I remember moving into a new neighborhood as a kid trying to make friends. Everyone in this neighborhood had this game for some reason including myself. None of them were able to figure out how to beat Darth Maul though until I told them to circle around hitting him. They somehow accepted me after that.
3:19 If someone told me there was a Star Wars game where Obi-Wan says "Take that, you ugly cuss!", had I never watched this video, I would have NEVER believed them. Also, am I the only one who thinks that Obi-Wan's adventures before Episode I would have made a much more interesting series than the one Disney+ gave us?
I replayed this game over 100 times when I was a kid, and that's simply an unused voiceline, Obi-Wan never actually says that, in-game. This reviewer kinda edited alot of voicelines in unfitting locations. >w
i LOVED this game as a kid but never owned an xbox so it wasn't until THIS VIDEO that i learned there's a parody of the "choose life" speech from trainspotting at the end. INCREDIBLE.
I wish this game was backwards compatible with 360, it would be nice to see this game get some preservation, it has many flaws but i found it very fun. Also the trainspotting reference is 10/10.
Been wanting to play this game forever but I don't have my original Xbox anymore. If there's another Star Wars game which I think deserves a dive like this it's Star Wars Bounty Hunter. While it doesn't have the "so bad its good" charm of this one (I think it's just generally a good game) it explores and expands the Star Wars universe in a lot of cool ways imo.
3:49 The Jin'ha are those red-robed people who live on the planet Obredaan and mined lightsaber-resitant Cortosis ore for they sold to the Trade Federation. This is the only appearance or mention of them even though Obredaan had another mention in the Legends-branded novel, Legacy of the Force: Bloodlines while Cortosis is actually all over legends media and even eventually made it into canon with the novel A New Dawn.
I find it funny to see Obi-Wan cartwheeling around the area, while holding his lightsaber. I also find it weird hearing him talk in his Scottish accent rather than his British accent.
@@bldontmatter5319 I know Evan is Scottish. I’m saying that it’s weird to hear the character talking in a Scottish accent, cause the actor who played Ben Kanobi was British.
@usmantariq3316 100% wrong. Ewan McGregor is Scottish. He used an English accent when speaking as Obi-Wan. Also, no Scottish person will appreciate the 'British' label. Scots are Scottish. The British label is insensitive because it's a reminder of the imperial enslavers of Scotland. Never call a Scot British.
I acknowledge this game isn't very good, but it will always have a special place in my heart. My father bought this for me as my first Xbox game, alongside Episode I Starfighter. He and I used to watch Star Wars movies (and the prequels as they released in theaters) when I was a child, so I always see this game cover and feel nostalgic.
this was 1 of my favourite games as a kid. the Jin'Ha swamp has an entire area with like 30 or more enemies you encounter after a waterfall near the end. i just ran around grouping them up into an army then Qui-Gon and i demolished them at the waterfall. glorious. Maul was always so hard because as a kid the idea of circling never occured to me. the number of times i got force pushed into the hole Canon style or off the bridge will never escape my top 10 most frustrating fights. getting to fight the ENTIRE council bar Yoda was the best experience. you'd always end up fighting the weirdest character in a 1v1 after everyone else was dead. i got Depa Billiba once and i just thought HOW? how are you alive? if they remastered this game i'd happily pay $60 for it. hell get Ewan and Neeson to voice this time and bam massive success
I remember playing this game. My older brother couldn’t beat mace windu so I told him I would try. I ended up running through one of the doorways and as mace followed me in, the doors closed on him which caused him to die.
Awesome video lol. I was in hysterics seeing Obi-Wan cartwheeling across the desert at night. I remember seeing this in stores as a kid and the green color and cover art always intrigued me but alas I had a PS1 and never got the original Xbox, so I never got to play it. I think seeing this.. I would’ve enjoyed it though haha. Also, certain aspects of this game remind me Bounty Hunter which came a few years later, and kicked major ass!
I played this at launch back in 2001 and eventually always come back to it and just recently beat this game again. I spent so many hours as a kid in the lightsaber arena fighting the npcs and always get a rush of nostalgia on every playthrough. Besides some clunky combat here and there and some frustrating levels on Naboo the game hasn't aged too bad, overall I love the game!
I only played this for the first time about a year ago when I got a modded Xbox with most of the OG Xbox library pre-installed, and definitely have to agree with you. I actually really enjoy it, despite it being super hard to objectively recommend, lol. It certainly captures that old-school Jedi Knight feel in lots of places though, with the low-poly recreations of those Star Wars environments echoing attempts in games like JK, Jedi Power Battles and Shadows to the Empire (both of which, even at the time, mostly looked like a cubist abstraction of the reality, right?) and the general movement and the feel of the lightsabers in terms of leaving scorch marks on walls and slicing through people, as janky as it was to actually control the thing. You're right, there is a load of charm in Star Wars games like this. I also think it's interesting that there was _another_ Xbox launch title _FROM ACTUALY JEDI KNIGHT DEVS_ called New Legends that is *completely* forgotten nowadays and not just because it lacked the Star Wars license. Those devs, Infinite Machine, were ex-Jedi Knight developers but man, they really bungled that one (obviously; they never made another game) and their whole game performs terribly and doesn't feel like ANYTHING with wimpy, feckless combat and large, empty areas... whereas the newer LucasArts hires who put together Obi Wan actually make it _sort of_ feel like a Jedi Knight title at least.
Yeah I played this game where i was younger. I remember some of the doors were glitchy and one location in the Naboo Palace I was of stuck for ages not knowing which way to go.
I spent so many hours playing this as a kid! It's a hidden gem as far as I'm concerned. And hey, I'm sure you know this but if you say hello to the Wookie at the beginning of the first level he will actually follow you and fight alongside you. There's also a second Wookie on the lower level in the alleys and if you save him from the gang members he too will follow you to the level's end. My favorite thing to do was wait on the train platform at the end of the first level and use force push to throw the gang members onto the smokestacks because they would catch fire if they landed on top. I got such a kick out of that LOL
Good look at the game. I like the right stick used for attacks/dodges in sixth gen games, can be hit & miss, but camera can be boring. Got Episode 3 few days ago too.
Picked up Obi-Wan when it was new. Brother and I really enjoyed playing it. I still play through the campaign every couple of years! Controls do take a bit to get used to, but once you're adept with them, it's a really nice control system, imo. I personally really enjoyed the campaign levels. Super fun to get some Obi-Wan backstory and side missions while simultaneously playing along with Episode I. Though some levels make you want to tear your hair out... Looking at you, "Captives of the Federation"...
I'm one of the devs of the original Obi-Wan game for PC, and helped out a little when it switched over to be an X-Box title. I'll definitely take "Best Worst" or "Worst Best" in whatever order. This video was hilarious, and helped a little with the PTSD I still experience thinking about Obi and his insane accent.
@@Flandrew very different - the PC game was meant to be a spiritual successor to the popular Jedi Knight series. Multiplayer was going to be a huge component. We also had quite extensive plans for the "Historical Missions" that detailed Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's assignments before the events of Phantom Menace. These were going to be co-op as well! (Some of the historical missions lived on in the X-Box version, sort of.) The analog-stick control scheme came about because of a planned mouse-driven glyph system for initiating different lightsaber moves... but that never really came together satisfactorily. The X-Box team did a good job slimming down a wildly ambitious design into a console version they could ship-- but it was still a pretty wacky Frankenstein monster. And you noted plenty of the bananas stuff in the game-- which really made me laugh.
This was an incredibly immersive experience as a little kid. 10/10 before the age of 10, and it’s still a solid game even today. Gotta love the 1v1’s in the reflective council chamber 😏
We actually had a lot of fun with this game. Not so much in the single player, but I had some friends over to play the multiplayer and we had a good time with it. Unfortunately, you had to make some unofficial rules. Ki Adi Mundi had this HUGE pool of force power so he could throw you all over the arenas and characters like Eeth Koth were just tanky so we ended up doing mirror matches most of the time. Conehead battles with Ki Adi Mundi were the order of the day most of the time so we could blast each other with Force Push trying to get a win by sending each other down the big pit in the Naboo arena.
This was my very first video game I played on a console. I remember my dad got me an og Xbox from a yard sale and showed me the game. I was no older then 4. I always got stuck at that swamp mission and couldn’t progress out of it. I’m 19 now. This game will forever have a place in my heart.
During the training missions sparring with Plo Koon and hearing Obi Wan threaten him with "Get back I'm warnin ye !" In a thick Scottish accent had me in stitches.
I do remember moments in levels where I would get lost, and discover the most obscure obsticals to make in order to proceed. I thought they felt u finished or I was somehow cheating taking shortcuts.
Dude, I’m so glad you did this one. This game was a classic in my house growing up, I still play it from time to time :) beyond underrated. Hello hello hello hello *kenobi’s voice*
Imagine the council sending a master and his padawan to rescue two masters. I'm sure if the two masters including Plo Koon couldn't do it then even weaker jedi can do it.
Despite Obi-Wan being green on 0:55, the reason for that is it was also going to be released on PlayStation 2 & GameCube. Instead of the green here, the PS2 cover would be blue, and the GameCube would be purple (and yes, a purple lightsaber), but they got cancelled.
This was the first Star Wars game I ever got into apart from the OG Battlefront. I played this game night and day. My dad actually really liked watching me play because he found it so funny in its ridiculousness. For that alone it will always be a nostalgic bright spot for me
I resent the fact that he had Star Wars Masters of Teras Kasi as his example of not so great Star Wars games, I love that game! Still get the urge to play it sometimes. A Star Wars fighting game, and with a tusken raider named Hoar! “Luke Skywalker versus Hoar!” still never gets old lol
I really enjoyed this game growing up I loved the 1v1 fighting mode and if you beat maul you unlock a free for all death match with all the jedai in the traing room
This, Battlefront 1 & 2, and clone wars were the Star Wars games of my childhood. Very fun to play and hope at some point obi-wan becomes back compat with the other games.
Honestly, you missed a number of features. There's an ability to go slow-mo, there's lower strikes, power strikes, overhead power jump to overhead strike, and there's even an auto target feature which allows you to focus less on camera angle and more on who you are targeting. I think a lot of people didn't really look at what you can do in the controls of this game 🤷♂
Imagine getting this game a half a year before Attack of Clones premere and tell your colleagues Obi Wan gonna have a beard and there'd be Super Battle Droids in the upcoming movie.
I have no idea how many hours I devoted to playing this game. I named my files Aragorn, Zorro, Lancelot, Maximus, Guts, etc. I cut through sooo many enemies and finished it countless times. I love this game still.
