The Betacam SP legacy

Betacam is a family of half-inch professional videocassette products developed by Sony in 1982. In colloquial use, "Betacam" singly is often used to refer to a Betacam camcorder, a Betacam tape, a Betacam video recorder or the format itself.
All Betacam variants from (plain) analog recording Betacam to Betacam SP and digital recording Digital Betacam (and additionally, HDCAM and HDCAM SR), use the same shape videocassettes, meaning vaults and other storage facilities do not have to be changed when upgrading to a new format. The cassettes are available in two sizes: S (for Short) and L (for Long). The Betacam camcorder can only load S magnetic tapes, while television studio sized video tape recorders (VTR) designed for video editing can play both S and L tapes.
The cassette shell and case for each Betacam cassette is colored differently depending on the format, allowing for easy visual identification. There is also a mechanical key that allows a video tape recorder to identify which format has been inserted.
The format supplanted the three-quarter-inch U-Matic format, which Sony had introduced in 1971. In addition to improvements in video quality, the Betacam configuration of an integrated professional video camera/recorder led to its rapid adoption by electronic news gathering (ENG) organizations.
DigiBeta, the common name for Digital Betacam, went on to become the single most successful professional broadcast digital recording video tape format in history, but now although Betacam remains popular in the field and for archiving, new tapeless digital products have led to a phasing out of Betacam products in television studio environments since as of 2006.

Betacam SP (NTSC) has vertical resolution of 480 lines, but 4K video has 2160 lines of vertical resolution, not 4000.

Betacam SP (PAL) has vertical resolution of 576 lines, though.

I’m feeling serious nostalgia. I always admired these cameras when I saw them in the field, I’m almost tempted to buy one off eBay for the coolness of them.

This similar thing also happened on Betacam (oxide), Digital Betacam, Betacam SX, HDCAM, MPEG IMX and HDCAM SR.

It's insane how tiny video storage has become. Our baseball team records raw footage to tiny 128gb sd cards. Meanwhile, the actual broadcast records to flash memory on two computer files (mkv and mp4) on one laptop. We're getting new technology this season, so this info might be outdated. Can't wait to see how small it becomes in the future. My grandparents shot home videos onto VHS-C cassettes. Even back then it was amazing to see how tiny VHS tapes could become and putting them into the adapter was always fun to watch as it grabbed the tape and pulled it to make it a full size VHS. I would love to see a deep dive into that video vault someday in the future. Go Sharks!

Studio masters were often recorded to 1” Type C, which is very robust. BetaSP is better quality (higher bandwidth), but I think more susceptible to deterioration over time. Something else was bottlenecking the quality of those transfers. Generation loss or something.

I watched your video, because I was curious about the technology. I have someone offering me a working betacam SP player, and I just wanted to figure what it was. Anyone need one?

As recently as about 20 years ago, I think I would have been ecstatic to come into possession of one of those machines. I don't know what I'd even do with it now. Remember when we'd rent VHS tapes to watch? 😂 That was still a thing early in this century! Also, I bet that you get e.g. significantly better colors (I was into all this stuff as a young kid, and I stopped caring once the internet appeared, haha) with that than a consumer format; merely comparing the lines of resolution doesn't quite covey how much better that is than VHS/beta.

I still to this day see people making the mistake of not knowing the difference between the consumer Betamax format and the commercial/production format Betacam. My college had Betacam SP and that’s when I learned that they were two separate formats. They actually aren’t even remotely compatible. Both VHS and Betamax both record a composite signal (and a very poor one at that). Betacam records a component signal onto the tape. The tap speed is quite a bit faster than the consumer counterparts as well. Although not as good as modern HD and 4K equipment, this format was capable of recording a proper NTSC/PAL signal in full colour and was fairly close to DVD quality. Betacam actually had better quality picture than the consumer laserdisc format which was limited to composite video.

@@mattquinn-caledoniantelevi2522 I am aware of the other iterations of the format though I do not have any experience with them, I’ve only used betacam SP. I am no expert on video quality but to me content that went from film to home DVD looked better than content that was recorded, edited and played on betacam. DVD video quality can really very from disc to disc since bitrates can very and some home video releases pushed the limits of compression (TV series sets are a good example of this).

These tapes were also the ones used by 1+1, Inter, Novy Channel, Public (Ukrainian TV channel), among other Ukrainian television channels, for airing TV programs on those networks, and plenty more besides those.

I read that Betacam SP is 340 TVL which translates to a digital equivalent of 450x480 but jist read that the equivalent is 720x480 in which case VHS would be 500x480 and that's not right! Would also like to know the resolution of the various Quadraplex formats.

@video99couk
@video99couk 2 года назад
Yes. They then went on to use Digital Betacam, HDCAM and HDCAM-SR, all with the same form factor as BetacamSP which itself has a dotted line connection to domestic Betamax. Professional versions of VHS existed too, such as MII and D9, but they had very little market success compared to Beta. So in this sense at least, Beta outlived VHS and surely earned Sony more money than anyone made from VHS and its derivatives.
