The Beverly Hillbillies is an American situation comedy originally broadcast for nine seasons on CBS from 1962 to 1971, starring Buddy Ebsen, Irene Ryan, Donna Douglas, and Max Baer, Jr. The series is about a poor backwoods family transplanted to Beverly Hills, California, after striking oil on their land.
A Filmways production created by writer Paul Henning, it is the first in a genre of "fish out of water" themed television shows, and was followed by other Henning-inspired country-cousin series on CBS. In 1963, Henning introduced Petticoat Junction, and in 1965 he reversed the rags to riches model for Green Acres.
The show paved the way for later culture-conflict programs such as McCloud, The Nanny, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Doc. Panned by many entertainment critics of its time, it quickly became a huge ratings success for most of its nine-year run on CBS.
The Beverly Hillbillies ranked among the top twenty most watched programs on television for eight of its nine seasons, twice ranking as the number one series of the year, with a number of episodes that remain among the most watched television episodes of all time.

Fun Fact: The opening credit scenes where Jed discovers oil/ his family’s cabin was filmed at Franklin Canyon Reservoir…in Beverly Hills.
@nicholascasbarra239
@nicholascasbarra239 2 года назад
That's probably due to the 30 mile zone (aka the TMZ) the unions said if you film on location within a 30mi radius of a particular Hollywood intersection you pay the crew standard wages. If you film outside the radius (e.g in Texas :) ) you have to pay travel, accommodation allowances etc.

There definitely used to be one or two rabbits in the scene where Jed's shot strikes oil. He missed the clearly visible rabbit[s] in the course of striking oil. The rabbit[s] have long since been deleted.

One night, my little ones asked for a bedtime story. For whatever reason, my mind kind of drew a blank and the opening theme to The Beverly Hillbillies came to mind. So I told them to "listen to a story of a man named Jed ... " They didn't know any better and kids love practically any bedtime story.

Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed. A poor mountaineer who barely kept his family fed. Then one day, he was shootin' at some food when up from the ground came a bubbling crude..Oil that is. Black gold. Texas tea. Well, the next thing you know old Jed's a millionaire! Ye know, I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with the Beverly Hillbillies. In some ways, it portrays us hill folk as backwards and stereotyped, but in others it portrays our simple wisdom as a remedy to the ills of the modern industrial society. It’s likely the most charitable portrayal of us in media that I’ve seen, honestly. But still, seein a lot of the portrayals of my people not knowin much about the modern world around em and bein ignorant does rub me the wrong way. Now don’t get me wrong. At the end of the day, it’s a very entertainin show and I can watch for hours. I don’t get all riled up over it. This is just thinkin about things. This comments more for younger hillbillies on the internet I reckon. I spent a long long time bein real ashamed of who I was because of my schoolin and bein showed stereotypes of us in media. To y’all young mountaineers: ye ain’t gotta be ashamed of who ye are. We got a proud, thrivin hist’ry that runs back to Scotland, Ireland, Sweden, Britain, Denmark, and the Scandinavian countries. Our culture n accent is a hallmark of our ancestors and a living testament to whose who came before. Of course we all have things to learn, and some things are best discarded (homophobia, racism, etc), but our accent, values, kinship, and honor should be cherished. I beg you young uns: Don’t let our flame die out.

I'm a hillbilly and proud. Words like homophobia and racism are just words used as weapons to attack us, shame on you for repeating the attacks of our Communist enemy that seeks to eradicate us. I'm tired of the Commie hate directed toward ordinary working people. We are the backbone that built this country and made it what it is today. Mass murdering Communists are leeches and parasites who seek to steal the fruits of ordinary working peoples hard work. Hillbillies deserve total respect in this country for all hard work and sacrifices we made to build this country.

@JakeLayman-md4fw People are tired of that. Eventually it will have to hit them in the pocket book and that will take away their ability to do it. Hopefully, anyway.

That is true. He had to quit because the silver paint used on him made him allergic, and he ended up in hospital and almost died.

Reminds me of the 1960s TV Deputy Dawg cartoon. As a Londoner I had to strain my ears to listen, but it was a charming language. Another thing, the euphemism was unknown and plain talk reigned. Can't be bad. Just going off to read some Mark Twain.

Somewhere, locked away in a vault, is the complete opening with Kellogg's Corn Flakes written into the theme song. Perhaps one day, we'll be able to see it again. (Jed is pointing at a billboard ad for the cereal!)

Way way back in college, we'd all come back from studying about 11 pm. By 11:30, we were all in one of my buddy's dorm rooms, cracked open some beers, did a few bong hits and watched Green Acres and The Beverly Hillbillies.

Billy Connolly first picked up a banjo at the age of 21 because of this theme tune (just listened to him saying this on an BBC4 interview from 1977 called Desert Island Discs thats on Spotify). After a few years, he formed a small bluegrass/folk duo called the Humblebums, where he would tell occassional jokes inbetween songs, and then eventually became a full stand-up comedian. Go listen to him play banjo on their cover of Cripple Creek!

Granny sitting on the third tier , On her rocking chair ! Just putting her there for that 1 scene was incredibly dangerous , One turn from Jethro and she would go flying off that truck , And probably be killed ! Can you imagine her actually riding in that while Jethro's cruising down the highway .

This particular intro in color is slightly different from some of the black and white versions.In the black and white version,Jed comes down from a slightly different angle before he shoots his rifle; and the oil that's pouring out of the ground, looks (completely different) from how it's pouring out of from the ground from the color version; also, in the black and white version, right after he shoots and the oil starts pouring out of the ground, you will notice that there is a close up of Jed looking at the oil, whereas in the color version, it's also a close up of Jed, but the black and white version,has more of a tighter shot. In the black and white version, Jed runs into the cabin (without his dog) and quickly closes the door and rushes by the sink (without his rifle) and then he goes and grabs "Granny" and they run to the window from the side of the table that's closest to the (fireplace); and not! from the side that's closest to the (sink);and they (did not!) go out the door);(I know the real reason why? but it's takes way too long to explain; it's a clip that was used from an episode from when Jethro was driving his mother's truck) and then you see them all in the truck driving away leaving behind the little deer in front of the cabin. Whereas, in the color version, after Jed shoots his rifle, he runs into the cabin along with his "dog" and leaves the door (wide open) he then runs to the sink and lays down (his rifle).He then grabs Granny, and after he grabs Granny, they slightly turn, and "Granny" is now running out the door ahead of Jed; tagging Jed along;and not the other way around.(but if you pay very close attention,) while the music 🎶🎵🎵 is playing, the lyrics kind of suggests that, "Well the first thing you know is:Jed's a millionaire," (it was actually the "kinfolks",)(and notJed) that said,"Jed" move away from there, giving you the illusion that Jed was telling Granny "I'm a millionaire now" move away from there & that California is the place you oughta to be) (Not!,) that "Jed", actually told "Granny" that he was a millionaire and to move away from there; cuz California was a place to be. And then it was Granny (not Jed) that ran in front, running out the door while tagging along Jed while the door remained wide open. And then you see them all in the truck driving away, but this time it was no deer left behind. I also noticed when I was a kid, that the black and white version of the opening credits was slightly different from the color version. In some of the black and white versions, there was a white car driving along the passenger side; while in the color version, there was a large truck, a couple of cars, and a station wagon driving by on the driver's side. I also noticed when I was a kid, that the black and white version, the dog between granny,and Ellie May was seated more towards the middle; while in the color version, he was seated closer to Ellie May and was much more alert; sitting more upright, and not slouching. In some of the black and white versions,(though not all)(because there were several black and white that are rare ones; and some of them had different version of the hillbilly song),In some, Ellie may didn't have her hat on as much; whereas, in the color version she kept holding her hat for fear that it may blow away. In the black and white version, Jed had his rifle pointing upwards on his right side; whereas, in the color version, it was pointing up but over his right shoulder and his right arm wrapped around it. In some of the black and white version, Jed and Jethro would point to the left and into the right as if to say: look at here. And look over there. While in the color version, I believe they only did it once.

also, in the original black-and-white intro, Granny didn't wear glasses. In the color intro, she is. First thing I noticed that was different between the two.
