In German we’d say:
Mir fehlen die Worte. DIE GROßE STADT ist ein tief bewegender, unfassbar schöner und menschlicher Film. Ein Meisterwerk.

Goddamn right. Ritwik Ghatak is on par with Satyajit Ray, sadly he does not get the recognition he deserves. True genius

I'm tremendously happy that you guys are exploring the films from the Golden age of Parallel cinema. We have reduced Indian cinema to Bollywood, while the real gems flounder. Satyajit Ray's films are timeless, they are masterpieces because they transcend beyond time and space. 'Mahanagar' is a film which is part of 'Calcutta trilogy', an ode to the city and the triumph of the human spirit. Please do the review of the other two films of 'Calcutta trilogy' as well. It would also be extremely gratifying if you check out Ritwik Ghatak's films and contributions to the neo-realistic genre. Many hold him even in higher regards than Ray because many argued that Ray always sanitised his films and never dug deep enough to the ugliest curses of society. His films are, at one hand melodramatic, on the other hand neo-realistic. Yesterday was his birthday too, you can start with his most revered film 'Meghe Dhaka Tara'.
@TheJimmyCage
@TheJimmyCage 4 года назад
His birthday would have been a great opportunity to start with his movies... unfortunately we didn't know. We will definitely try to watch and review some of his films. Hopefully we can find them. With Ray it's quite easy to see many of his films since they are on the new Criterion channel. But we will try for sure. :)

It is true that several of the stalwarts of Indian cinema (as a whole) are often overlooked. Not many people remember the Golden Age films and the people who worked on them. I believe it is essential to watch films of the quartet (Satyajit Ray, Ritwick Ghatak, Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha) to really appreciate Indian film-making. While Mahanagar (1963) was set in Calcutta and is deeply entrenched in city life in Calcutta at the time, it is not a part of Satyajit Ray's "Calcutta trilogy". The films Pratidwandi [The Adversary] (1970), Seemabaddha [Company Limited] (1971), and Jana Aranya [The Middleman] (1976) form the trilogy. In a sense, they showcase the city and her people through changes such as the Emergency period. They focus on the spirit of Calcutta and of the people she bears. I would love it as well if the films of Ritwick Ghatak are reviewed in this channel. I think that Satyajit Ray, in spite of his artistic approach to film-making, was through-and-through a mainstream filmmaker. Perhaps it was his love for Golden Age Hollywood films or because of his earlier jobs as an illustrator and cover artist that made Satyajit Ray have a keen eye for mass-market appeal. On the other hand, Ritwick Ghatak was the progenitor of Indian Art films. One of the reasons he is not as well-known as Satyajit Ray is because of this. Satyajit Ray's films are great visual treats that can be enjoyed by young and old while Ritwick Ghatak's films require a lot of introspection. Their complementary nature of storytelling (I think) can be seen as being similar to that of Akira Kurosawa and Yasujiro Ozu. I agree that Ritwick Ghatak's films can be quite melodramatic and he seems to care more for the message of the story rather than the presentation of it through film techniques. I think this is because of his approach to the subject being similar to theatre rather than cinema. His films are, therefore, more theatrical than they are cinematic.
@TheJimmyCage

Thank you for all the context :) We are really looking forward to explore Ritwick Ghatak's films in the future.

Mahanagar movie is as old as my mother but the story is so contemporary, the film can be remade without much change even today. Bengali and Malayalam films were once considered ahead of its time and this is a classic example why. Though sadly today Malayalam and some other Indian language movies have outpaced Bengali movies.

Loved the opening!!!!!!! I love your reviews. this movie happens to be one of the most heartfelt movies that I have seen. You are right in your analysis that it seems as though the director is speaking directly to the audience. The characters, the struggles and the dilemmas portrayed in the movie are very much a reality for many still in India. Also, i was hoping if you could introduce a segment on short movies in your review schedules. I really love short movies and want to explore the nuances of how they are made and what subjects they cover in different countries. Anyway, keep up the awesome work.!!

Thanks a lot for your wonderful wonderful review. I have been in Germany for a while now. This brings along the consequence that I have been making some friends here now. But as these budding friendship grow what follows is an intense desire to understand and be understood by your friends. But so far I have hardly had any success with regards to that. I have fallen in love with the people here but inspite of the fact that they try their best to make me feel welcomed in their hearts, what leaves me so unsatisfied is that they never really understand me cause they have no idea about were I come from. Ofcourse they know Kolkata they have heard about it. But to put it mildly, if you know the game of thrones then, to me there subconscious perception of Kolkata feels like the view of a person from Westros on Ashai. Not that they think we are evil 😂. But more like we are shrouded in mystery and they probably don't think it's worth their time. But anyways I have blabbered for far too long. I must say thank you for so eloquently presenting how well you understand my Bengali heart, and thanks for making me feel so understood again as if I were back at home again. ❤️
