"Two" by Satyajit Ray

In 1964, renowned filmmaker Satyajit Ray was asked to create a short film for ‘ESSO World Theater’, a cultural showcase presented on television and funded by the American oil company Esso. Asked to write and direct the film in English, Ray opted instead to make a film without words. The result is a poignant fable of friendship and rivalry. As he did for many of his films, Ray composed the music for the film, including the haunting tune played on the flute.
After Satyajit Ray was awarded an Honorary Academy Award in 1992, the Academy embarked on an ambitious endeavor to preserve the works of the Bengali filmmaker. “Two,” also known as “Parable of Two,” is part of the Academy’s Satyajit Ray Collection (www.oscars.org/film-archive/co..., which includes 18 feature films directed by Ray and preserved by the Archive.
Though Ray worked exclusively on 35mm, “Two” may have been filmed on 16mm, as it was created specifically for television. After an exhaustive search for elements relating to the film, three 16mm prints were found. From the 16mm print with the least wear and tear, courtesy of the Austrian Film Museum, a preservation negative was struck. “Two” was then digitally scanned and picture clean up and restoration were performed to eliminate scratches. The 16mm film’s poor audio was also restored. The film is now preserved and available to screen theatrically on 16mm or as a digital cinema package (DCP). Now, audiences everywhere can see this obscure gem, preserved by the Academy Film Archive, from master filmmaker Satyajit Ray.

The rich kid tries to impose his superiority (his idea of happiness) over the poor kid by showing off his materialistic possessions to feel good about himself. Thus he picks up a "fight". He tries to break him as hard as he can. However, the poor kid doesn't lose his spirit and decides to keep himself happy with everything "little" he has. In the end, the rich kid accepts his defeat with a realization that he's not content. Also, him withdrawing himself from his toys, and the tower falling is shown as a metaphor for his defeat and his inability to find joy despite having "everything". "Two" explains the duality of happiness. One that comes from possessions and the other that comes from within.

It's sad how many viewers don't realise that this short film is a subtle portrayal of the *American-Vietnam War* 🇺🇸🇻🇳 by Ray with classic usage of symbolism and metaphors. At the beginning, look at the *Mickey Mouse cap* and *Coca Cola* symbolising the US. The rich kid is shown to have all the materialistic joys of life yet is insecured by the poor kid's happiness (Much like the US intrusion in Vietnam)....His *loud toys* symbolise the advanced weapons against whom the simple flute, kite etc. is no match..... But at the end, we all know what happened in history, as the rich kid sits lost in the music of the flute and his "toys" crumble down...👏👏👏 ____________________________

I don't think a renowned and pro realist filmmaker like Ray would purposefully not give credit to anyone. It could be so that the street kid or his family didn't want to have their name out in public, since working in films at that time was seen as heinous and not as glamorous as it is today. It could also be so that the street kid was unable to introduce himself properly and was hence, just used in the film without crediting.

He would have got a heart attack after knowing that more than 90% things in a cinema are done with goddamn VFX these days. VFX artists are contributing more in a film than a filmmaker which is really awful. Baji Rao Mastani, Padmavat in Bollywood and Mank in Hollywood. But on those days Ray, Kubrick, Tarkovsky, Bergman, Kurosawa used to achieve special effects manually on their own with meticulous dedication and hard work which they used to do themselves. This had made them the Real Masters of Cinema.Kudos.

The rich kid first hears the poor kid playing the flute. After he seemingly "defeats" the poor with his superior toys and destroys the kite eventually, he goes back happy feeling victorious. But finally hears the same flute music from the poor kid. Showing that the poor kid's spirit is still unbroken and undefeatable even after all that materialistic superiority that the rich kid showed off.. ✌️🙂. This is what I think Ray meant, guys.

At one side we have rich children who are equipped with all sort of materialistic things for having fun while at other side a poor child who does have indigenous and locally produced means of having fun. A representation of two way of living within the same society. Knowingly and unknowingly, director has produced how new way of living is supplanting and replacing existing way of life. This film is made during the Vietnam War, experts believe that the film makes “a strong anti-war statement” as it ends with street kid’s flute sound overpowering sound of expensive toys. Now no need to say who is Vietnam here and who is the spoiled rich kid :D

@Abhishek shukla I think you know deep down you are not that smart and just wanna be smart. But don't give up. If you wanna be smart you will be. Just don't try to act like one when you clearly are not. Be real. Be authentic. That's more respectable than being smart

"Not to have seen the cinema of Ray means existing in this world without watching the sun or the moon" - Akira Kurosawa I would urge everyone , who have come here to experience this enthralling immutable work of Ray , to go through a book called 'Our Films , Their Flims' by Mr.Ray . He profoundly expresses his discernable ideas about the 'Art'. And , the universality of silent films ,which by imposition, and advent ,of audio has got depleted its all-appealing open ended character. Edited : Wanted to quote the exact words.

Oh this is deep. For me the Message was even the person who wants to destroy others happiness for showing its own power, ultimately realizes that after destroying others , he has no one to get fun from. The destroyers happiness is not forever. This Message repeats when the toy brings down the blocks and can go no further itself

This wonderful short story by Satyajit Ray is showing the two sides of society through the "Two". One the privileged rich class boy and his dominant behaviour and other is the simple poor tribal boy who shows happiness is in simple things and in simple emotions. Masterpiece ♥️

I understand this story as depicting the conflict between wealth and self-contentment. It emphasizes the importance of considering both affluence and inner fulfillment, but true happiness ultimately comes from within.

Nowadays an intellectual artist mind is quite rare in the industry. Film makers failed to follow his legendary trail. Rip Indian Cinema😢.

Don't agree, there are some great filmographers today as well. Films like Newton, Kahaani, Black are some really thoughtful films. And you don't even know about the short films in India. THEY ARE AWESOME. Try some Indian short films.

making a movie is very tough.. for a normal person to do a movie in India is to submit his whole life into films.. it's very easy to criticise a movie but doing a movie needs lot of dedication, hard work, brilliance, talent and some luck too. Why don't you try writing some screenplay.. then u ll understand the hardship of film making

Love how the rich kid's toys make a mess outta themselves even with no outside intervention while the rich kid despite trying his level best to ruin the poor kid's happiness, fails to do so. The rich kid doesn't even know how to play the actual instruments, and relies on his to toys mechanically do it for him. The resulting sound is loud but cannot be called music for it has no melody or rhythm to it- in fact it's more of a noise than music- on the other hand, the poor kid's music has such a beautiful harmony to it that it transcends the noise that tries so hard to subjugate it... the toys too as if at the end accept their defeat- the ruin they intended to inflict on the real music of unstained simplicity in turn brings about their own ruin...
