Super majors like this should honestly be charging 30 a person. Never been to a major tourney but the thought of it being the same price as a local in a shitty anime shop is insane.

Melee is just simply dying for real this time. The sponsors have left, the tournies are bleeding one by one, the top streamers barely break 500, and the community is insanely divisive and gatekeepy. Loved the game and the community, but at some point we need to let go.
honestly 100 dollars for what is essentially a 3 day convention with 24 hour venue at genesis is absolutely ridiculous value compared to most conventions. people complaining about that was some clown shoes ass behavior. I honestly think that most bigish tournaments "should" be about 1.5-2x the price they are (by which I mean if our TO's were charging "market rate" for these types of events that is how much they would cost)m and some even more. like, these events are cheap as shit on the scale of things.
Tldr He went to coach volleyball for highschool and organize highschool volleyball events and thay eats into his time. Melee is getting too expensive to comfortably run. He did not and has not reached out to other big money people to take over because he believes no one obviously or immediately apparent could and still run it with the same scale and flag ship name.

It's tragic but has absolutely nothing to do with the economy atm. As multi-faceted and complicated as the term "economy" is it is doing well by most metrics, one of which is incredibly low employment rates. I think it's more to do with popularity and the low ask from tournaments monetarily of the attendee to make the tournament more accessible that make it not profitable for the organizers. E Sports as an industry is in the red financially and has been for 7+ years
