I was sure that it was Funimation and Crunchyroll that inspired me to choose the life of a pirate, not Luffy. Even if I can afford anime streaming services, I want to see those two companies burn to the ground.
I can't believe that crunchyrolls translators are paid only $80 per episode. Translators need as much money as they can possibly get because translating is pretty difficult
That just impossible to even survive day to day. With how much time they put into the sub, they should be pay more than that, as least around 1000$ for a day of subbing Edit : I think my comment wasn’t clear enough on the money part, and also the comment below talk about the salary they got so might as well change a bit ^^
Reasons why I pirate: Any money I would give to Crunchyroll doesn't even reach the original creators. (If it does, it's pennies) Sometimes anime I wanna watch aren't available. (Either they take it down, or it's not available in my region) Fansubs are always more accurate than "Official Subs"
I personally only pirate as a last resort. There’s a lot of anime out there that was never licensed. Also the anime I never finished was once on Crunchyroll, then was dropped off the site through weird licensing issues. I have no idea where to find it legally, and the manga was never brought over to the west. Still sad about that.
@@oinker1695 I don't know what you mean. Capitalism is the solution. These bastards have a monopoly. They need competitors. Competitors based on a purchase model instead of a subscription model.
Imagine being one of the few people with the borderline superpower of speaking Japanese and English well enough to translate media between them, and then getting paid slave wages
I've done a bit of translation work for community game translations (jp > en), and it's way harder than I thought it'd be and I went in to it expecting it to be difficult. 80 bucks an episode should be a crime, except for one piece I guess since that's only 5 mins each ep.
I'd say piracy is justifiable when the media in question is very hard to purchase legally, or when the company who's selling the media is very scummy with their business practices or their treatment of employees.
@@TheChildofAuraReborn the only reason I still have my funimation account is because I watch dub and I know the money is at least going back to the English voice actors that I love. (Even though there are some I despise, coughs in monica rial)
@RandomName "jp not giving a shït outside of jp" Yet no one in "JP" has ever declared that to be their stance. It's just something that the anti-industry crowd and pirates more generally have assumed or made-up to rationalize their position and their actions. International sales made up 47% of the industry's revenue in 2019. Yes, worker mistreatment/underpayment is an issue, but taking money out of the industry doesn't solve that problem. Besides, it's pretty rich for those who enjoy the work of animators for free to cry crocodile tears over the poor exploited animators.
It’s kinda weird but great how versatile the logo is. It looks like an anime eye, the side of a sushi roll, and its circular design, or the eye lid, goes hand in hand with the first letter of the company. The last one is a bit of a reach but it’s pretty cool from a graphic design perspective how versatile the logo is :)

The polished website is just a copy and paste off of VRV, a streaming website they made. They also sabotaged a lot, if not all, of Webtoon anime by making them all 12 to 13 episodes when some needed more to make it have more either more character development scenes that are not in the anime that are in the manhwa or to add entire landscapes that were cut out entirely.

It's a pretty mig thing to complain about. They are supposed to be spending the subscription money on licensing and "supporting the creators" but they spend it on their own garbage. Then CrunchyRoll Simps call people who pirate "thieves". Bruh, you're not paying the creators either, you're paying a company who gives PENNIES to the creator. A better way of supporting the creators is buying merchandise.
I know I'm probably ruining a lauging party but, What piracy has the full subbed series of Powerpuff Girls Z? All 52 episodes. I've been trying to find it for days but I can't find anything.
Fun fact: Crunchyroll STILL uses the Fist of the North Star fansub from all those years ago, as opposed to freelance. I'm not entirely sure if there are even more, since Fist of the North Star is pretty much the only anime considered old I've seen on Crunchyroll. (Edited for clarification)
@@lordquaz7154 What anime? CR doesn't localize any anime except their own and even that might be outsourced. If you look at the publishers listed on the video pages, those are the people who are responsible. Even then it was Viz who changed the names on Jojo's (or at least whoever is to blame, the name changes long predate the official subs) and are only even there to dodge ligation for using famous trademarks (which as it so happens, transcend the "same market" limitation), though I think some of the changes were Warner Japan's fault too, just like how the blame for the 4kids One Piece dub was mostly the network censors' and Viz's faults.
Stuff like Crunchyroll and Funimation as well as how scummy they are nowadays is why I don’t have a problem…erm, finding alternative means to watching anime. Also, glad to see normal uploads from ya again after that like 5-hour Gintama video.
The main problem is that both companies have no legit competition, so they've had no incentive to change their ways once people started complaining about them. They hold a monopoly on dubbing and distribution. If more companies came out promising to give more money to artists, animators, and translators, and to properly Dub anime without any political bullshit, I guarantee they'd be tripping over themselves trying to fix their shit.
My favorite Anime is Precure There are 12+ seasons and 15+ movies. Idk about funimation ( I doubt it’s better) but crunchyroll only has the first season and the most recent season (but it only has around 15 episodes of it). None of the other seasons, none of the movies. AMINEKISA HERE I COME
Yeah, I guess that all this money was certainly worth it to put on that "wonderful" series! FYI HGS has a lower User score on IMDB (1.8) than motherfucking *The Nutshack* (1.9)
Crunchyroll out here promoting Demon Slayer and refusing to actually stream the movie. Joke's on them, I just saw it! They ain't getting a penny from me!
And here I was thinking that my Crunchyroll subscription was contributing real funding to the peole who slave away creating new episodes of my favourite Crunchyroll-exclusive show "This show is not available in your country due to licencing issues", man these light novel titles are getting long.
Great vid... christ. Fucking H-manga translators get paid by commission better than Crunchyroll does its freelancers. What a crazy time... essentially the people who translate the episodes earn a flat $80 USD per episode. I can't name a lesser job that pays $80 per work load aside from art commissions I suppose.
Hell, even art commissions earn more per load. Source: My wife, who charges 100 USD and up for pretty much anything but sketches. In the past year, she has earned more money than I have (which isn't all that fair, because I can't work due to covid)
God the ads are awful too. I have a busted ass TV that I can't change the volume to, so the anime is like almost the perfect volume, and then the ads come around and are literally 50 fucking times louder than the damn show
How do you think I felt when I learned Kaguya-sama had a second season that wasn't available on Crunchyroll? I literally had to find a pirate website to watch it.

One of the things that has royally annoyed me about crunchyroll, was how at some point, anime that I know I had previously watched on their platform had suddenly become completely inaccessible to me because it was no longer available in my region. I used to have a subscription, but after the prices bumped up (although not by much) and after seeing that anime was slowly disappearing off their site (in my region), I never resumed. I'm truly hoping a genuine service that would pay good wages to both the translators, animators, as well as the studios the anime came from will pop up in the near future.
I had a premium account for a year and every season pretty much half the series i was going to watch weren't available in the EU where i live. So i'm not paying full price and using half the product. Imagine walking into a subway paying for a sandwich only to be allowed to just eat half of what you paid for.
I feel like I'm having a bit of Deja Vu. Didn't this thing become a talking point for everyone in the surface Anime Community about two years ago, to the point that even a single individual could nearly rip apart everyone's moral arguments? *Uniquenameosaurus voice echoes*
0:51 I can't really blame you for getting info from the Vic situation wrong when you're really only ever going to get one heavily biased side of the story from any given source, like the one you mentioned.
I remember using pirating services back when I was 13 and thought that this was the norm for watching anime tbh. Also I never knew that translators were paid that little per episode. Here's a video suggestion though, more posed as a question, do you think effort is even required on RU-vid anymore?
Honestly I’d love to see more translator notes. Maybe have a toggle function or something but I love learning little factoids that I wouldn’t normally care about. It’s a highlight for early gintama, Touhou and my dive into vtubers (which are way harder to translate).
For $80 per episode, it's no wonder why fansubs are often far superior over the official subs. There's no way anyone would give a damn about the job they're doing if they are getting paid less than a minimum wage burger flipper.
I was watching the subbed Yu-Gi-Oh GX anime a few months back, and the website I was using was missing a few episodes. I went to search for the subbed anime in other websites, and Crunchyroll was the ONLY place that I was able to find the subbed version, and oh boy, those were the longest 3-4 episodes I have ever watched from a single anime. There were at least 6 ads before the episode began and another 6 at the middle. By god, 12 fricking ads in a single episode, not to mention that in the first of those that I watched, the subtitles had a 2 or 3 second delay. Suffice to say, I'm never using Crunchyroll ever again, unless I'm VERY desperate.
I can buy an Omnimon Model kit and more money will be given to the people that made the Digimon reboot than watching it on crunchyroll. That's why even though I am a pirate, I buy official merch at any opertunity I am given, because I at least know where that money is going.
I definitely find this informative. I was not aware of Crunchyroll's past and what stemmed from. I will say, I never used Crunchyroll because I prefer dub over sub (with English subtitles). The reason being is that I am a multitasker and I have problems with sensory processing issues that stem from my autism and ADHD. You could say "the sky is blue" and I my brain would translate that into "the shoe flew" because my brain is pretty much Windows ME (in that my brain failing to process something is akin to Windows ME crashing - it happens all the time and it frustrates me and people around me that it constantly happens). However, that explains only the English subtitles, which I even try to have on even original English language shows that I watch (shows like _"The Blacklist," _"Criminal Minds," _"Perception"_ and _"NCIS."_ I only watch those shows because they're something that my mom watches and I watch it to spend time with her). The English dub preference is attributed to my ADHD and multitasking. However, if there is no way to watch a dub, I will watch the English sub and be fine doing so (just missing out on things here and there because of my multitasking, ADHD, and the Japanese spoken dialog confusing my brain a tiny bit (to which I just shrug my shoulders to and carry on)). Back on topic, I do hope Crunchyroll one day does make effort to truly help the underpaid staff that put in so much hard work into anime. It's unfortunate that the world we inhabit has people who put so much hard work into things like anime and video games (especially looking at you EA and Ubisoft) and not get a salary that can barely feed a one person, perhaps a small, two to four-person family if they're lucky. However, I will, boycotting won't help these people because that's even less money to trickle down to those who are underpaid in the anime and video game industries (just to name a few industries). And less money also means layoffs, so these underpaid workers could lose their jobs as they are usually the first to go. At the same time, there are also things so atrocious that the higher ups do (looking at you again Ubisoft) that are so bad that it makes one sick to even purchase anything. All I will say is, boycotting is hypocritical in that even companies like Nestlé (one of the most hated companies ever worldwide) have done abhorrent atrocities (like pumping 200 gallons of freshwater out of Flint, Michigan that the residents needed most during the Flint Michigan water crisis, which is the crisis that killed 12 people and hospitalized 87 people, caused children a ton of biological problems (I.e. hair loss, formation of skin lessions, blindness from taking baths, etc.). Unfortunately, at the same time, we all need water and Nestlé owns pretty much all the world's water one way or another (through the main companies and subsidiaries and maybe via water bills that people pay). So either way, one can't say "just boycott them," because there are some companies that just can't be boycotted unless oneself wants to die of thirst or starvation. And boycotting can cause innocent people to lose their jobs, thus potentially making those people at risk of thirst and starvation, especially if that was the only job that would hire them. Needless to say, hypocrisy is unfortunately inevitable and it is important to be aware of it and be able to acknowledge when it could cause a problem in making arguments. However, I will say even hypocrites can have a point, just like how jerkasses can have a point (TvTropes reference, but it is true). These things are just super messy and makes doing the morally right thing, and much more knowing what is the morally right response, very, very, very difficult.
I've been thinking of getting rid of my crunchyroll for a while since I had my suspicions about them. (Namely, I was starting to question how much my money goes to support lesser-known titles like Iruma-Kun and if my subscription REALLY went to anyone) and this video helped me make up my mind. I'm disgusted by how much they underpay translators as well. Thank you so much for making a great, informative video. 👍
Glad you talked about legal options that are better than crunchyroll, because when the argument is "and therefore you should watch it illegally" results in no legal options working to be better and possibly resulting in lower legal availability. I know pennies on the dollar support is not much to work with, but it's more favorable than the 1 dvd sale that was made to make the fansub, so it's a lose lose.
The new beta completely lacks seasonal anime list and the schedules. It went for this awful endless list system that Netflix does which doesn't exactly work for anime. There is also no calendar to see any upcoming shows. You basically have to guess when a show airs and even then, it doesn't show in the beta version of CR. That 10 year old design actually works pretty well and now, we are forced to move to the beta in a week or so.
I hope more studios/franchises follow in gundam's footsteps. They have a youtube channel where they are putting up even the old series/movies. All subbed and free to watch.
I also distinctly remember them going full Ion Storm and getting a new, massively expensive and lavish office instead of trying to even pay their translators the average rates. It's ridiculous, and I hope that decision comes back to bite them in the ass someday.

The problem with "legal" anime in the west is that it's basically a monopoly. If you don't like Crunchyroll, just go to Funimation, did I mention they're both owned by Sony?
This is why the best way to support studios and animators you like is to just buy the blu rays. Most of it goes directly into their pocket and you get something physical out of it. Not to mention many studios uses their DVD sales to gauge how popular a series is and whether or not they will get a second season(most of the time).
Lol. I still remember the day Crunchyroll turned "legit". They did it over new years and nuked a lot of user uploaded videos. I still haven't finished watching eyeshield 21. 😅😅😅
This is why I roll my eyes when AnimeAmerica mentions CrunchyRoll as one of the "legal" sources to watch an anime. Edit; Crunchyroll is the Bleem of anime. For those who don't know Bleem was one of the first emulators for the Sony Playstation which charges you.
