At the 2000 Motor City Bowl between the Marshall Thundering Herd and the Cincinnati Bearcats, Marshall got an automatic invite for the fourth straight year by virtue of winning the MAC, even if there might have been better teams in the conference that didn't get to go bowling as a result. And the Motor City Bowl was so fed up about this that they flat out said to Marshall, "we don't want you playing here anymore." Drama ensued.

It’s amazing to me that Toledo, a team with a 10-1 and who beat Marshall 42-0 and won at Penn State didn’t get to go to a bowl.

Thank goodness that wouldn't happen today given that the MAC isn't a one-bowl league anymore.

Wasn't that a Gary Pinkel coached team at Toledo back then before he went to Mizzou?

Fair disclosure: I went to grad school at Western Michigan from 1997-1999. I admit, I was one who definitely wanted to see a (certain) different MAC team in the 2000 version of the Motor City Bowl. For me, part of it was jealousy: after all, Marshall joins the MAC and Division 1-A and immediately wins 4 straight conference championships while my team hadn't managed a conference championship since 1988. Part of it was that it felt like Marshall had an unfair advantage: Each MAC Championship game from 1997-2000 was held at Marshall's stadium in Huntington, West Virginia, regardless of which division champ had the better record. In 2000, WMU had a better overall record, had beaten Marshall head to head during the regular season, and was actually designated as the "home" team for the championship game. Part of it was simple frustration that WMU could get so close, but never quite finish the deal, losing the 2000 MAC Championship Game by 5 points and the 1999 MAC Championship game by 4 points. Many people say there are too many bowls these days, but I'm not one of them. A lot of that has to do with seeing teams during this era like 2000 Western Michigan and 1998 Miami Ohio (10-1, including a season opening win at #12 North Carolina) missing out on bowls altogether because of a loss to Marshall.

I was kind of rooting for Western Michigan. Their coach had been in the rumor mill to replace Bob Simmons at Oklahoma State before they opted for Les Miles.

I'm wondering if the Motor City Bowl's suits forgot what they signed on for. It was supposed to take the MAC's champion, and when you're a destination bowl, a team winning consecutive conference championships is a realistic possibility. I don't blame Marshall for feeling some type of way considering how the Motor City Bowl worked back then.

The Motor City Bowl is a special bowl for Marshall and us fans. From the great game we had with Ole Miss in '97, beating Louisville for our first ever bowl win, to beating BYU to go undefeated in 99. It was also a Christmas gift for my family. My older brother and dad went to the first two games and the ‘99 was my first ever Marshall game live as an 8 year old lol. So going from West Virginia to Detroit was always special. This video also reminded me of how tough the MAC was and how I still miss the rivalries with Toledo, WMU, Miami (OH), and Ohio. To see the MAC have two, sometimes three top 25 ranked teams, but only one could make a bowl sucked. But nothing we can do, times goes on, conferences change. But I'm always glad to see a former MAC rival on the OOC

The bowl game in question happened on the night of Mario's return to action after Hodgkins. Always cool seeing these "moments in time" captured in the graphics/ticker.

Uh, actually 2000 was his return after his first retirement (after the 1996-97 season). His Hodgkin's diagnosis and subsequent return happened in 1993.

This is very similar to when in 1987 in the European Cup (now Champions League) Real Madrid claimed that UEFA rigged the competition (through in their view crooked refereeing decisions in the semifinals against Bayern Munich) so that they would not be able to appear in their 3rd straight European final (they had appeared in the Europa League final in 1985 & 1986 & won both times). UEFA flat out denied these claims & basically said Real Madrid's poor play in both legs of the semifinals is what caused them to miss the European Cup final that year. Real Madrid & UEFA would again butt heads in 2001 & again it was over the outcome of the Champions League semifinals again vs Bayern Munich though this time the Spanish FA were also on Real Madrid's side as they claimed UEFA rigged the two matches to prevent the Champions League from having an all Spanish final two years in a row (Real Madrid & Valencia played each other in the 2000 final). Like in 1987, UEFA denied the claims & one UEFA official even suggested to Real Madrid to invest more in quality coaching and spend less time complaining about the referees.

This unofficial Jaguar Gator 8 historian will remind everyone you mentioned how Louisiana(-Lafayette) played in the New Orleans Bowl for four straight years in a video about the Las Vegas Bowl’s ill-fated decision to invite New Mexico to the 2003 game.

Now a team can’t go to a bowl game for two years after going up from FCS to FBS because of mandated transition time. JMU made the Top 25 this year but could not go to a bowl or play in the Sun Belt championship.

Even though I live in Detroit and love my hometown I think that at the time Marshall was to good for the Motor City Bowl. Marshall won the M.A.C. yearly and was deserving of a higher tier Bowl in a more let's say tropical city with nice weather and a Bowl that payed more money to the teams.

I started with CFB in 1997 after getting Street & Smith's season issue (at a garage sale of all places), and Marshall barely got mentioned in it, only the jump up in division and in the Mac conference section. Now I can't see ay of those first few seasons without thinking of them. Go figure.

The male equivalent of a Karen on the bowl committee decided to be a prick and was board with Marshall. That's my theory on what happened.
@mgb4692
@mgb4692 Год назад
Then there actually *was* a Karen involved with a Detroit bowl game featuring Marshall, no male equivalent needed Pam Ward in 2009 (then the Little Caesars Bowl) with Vinny Curry, thinking she was off-mic: "Will somebody hurry up and get him off the field so we can get going!?". Hey I hear Skip Bayless is still looking, there you go
