i assume OneShot is on here because of it's original 2014 freeware version. In it, if you close the game _at any time_ outside of Niko going to sleep, Niko dies upon booting the game back up. This is followed by a haunting rendition of the title track and a literal Windows error prompt simply reading "You killed Niko." the original version overall was much more dark and disturbing, with the Steam version today taking a less disturbing melancholic and somber approach to its story.
This is something I never knew about! I thought that somehow you HADto play the game fully, or I didn’t knew that’s what happened on the free ware version which I didn’t knew was a real thing either thanks for this!
It’s a travesty that you haven’t blown up yet. This is really some quality content. This is no joke better then 90% of the other half-assed icebergs on this site. Great work.
Some more additional facts about some of the games mentioned. - Bible Black is mostly known for it's OVA adaptation. Said OVA is known for it's horrendous English dub, and the fact that it was an anime that 4chan's /a/ section commonly recommends to new users, alongside Boku No Pico. Neither of those anime are safe to recommend to new users obviously. Another fact about this is that the same director of this game, Sei Shoujo, also was behind Starless: Nympomaniac's Paradise, which is on tier 5. That game has the dubious distinction of being the most disturbing game I've played to completion, though there's likely some other entries on iceberg that could take that title if I played them. Bible Black is apparently one of Sei Shoujo's tamer works, as the guy is known for including a bunch of fucked up shit in his games. - The release of RapeLay sparked some serious controversy at the time of its release, having been criticized by members of Parliament and by US Surpreme Court Justices, despite the fact that the game was never released outside Japan. This lead to several Japanese eroge publishers, at the time, blocking off their websites to foreigners, and one publisher went as far as to send Cease and Desist letters to fan translatators, and vandalized a translation wiki. - The Japanese title for Needy Streamer Overload is "Needy Girl Overdose," which I personally think is much more appropriate to the game's tone. - Alone in the Dark had three attempts at reboots, the first which was in 2001 is generally considered mid, the other two were in 2008 and 2015 and were universally reviled. There was also shitty Uwe Boll movie based off it. This does not bode well for the next reboot. - I actually forgot which Sirenhead game I was referring to, so I removed the Sirenhead entry from V3 of the iceberg. - DRAMatical Murder is considered one of Nitro-Chiral's more tame works. - Mad Father was actually remade twice. Once in 2016 and again in 2020 - Misao also got a remake in 2017. - I actually only knew about the one to one recreation of The Theater. This isn't necessarily a fun fact more so that the attention to detail with this iceberg is so well done that I'm learning new things from it despite having made the iceberg. - The final boss of Super Columbine Massacre is literally the South park Satan. I kid you not.
The trailers for the Alone in the Dark remake look a little jank but overall not too bad, the series could use a W so here’s hoping it’s good. By the time the full version of this video is out I’ll probably be able to say. Also I just didn’t want to give any real attention to the columbine game, or any real life tragedy based games to come, but yeah that game’s hell act is fucking wild
I feel like Im part of the group of people who got exposed to Dramatical Murder way too young. 💀 That it is considered "tame" for them...is wild. The music slaps tho.
I was waiting to hear about Super Columbine Massacre! I was a member of the forums when it was in development. It had approval from Columbine survivors but the game was asked to be removed when someone came on the forums and thanked the dev for the inspiration. Later that day it was discovered that forum member stabbed a girl at her school and the dev spent the day throwing up and then asked for all copies to be deleted. Mine was burned to CD and is lost but I have not touched it since.
I'm surprised luigis mansion isn't on here as a joke. Also, I'm not sure if it's on here later but don't talk to strangers is a interesting horror game
Not so fun fact about School Days: It had an anime adaptation, and during its run, a teenage girl had killed her father with an axe. The reason why I bring this up is because the media thought that her killing her father was inspired by gory anime at the time. The source? 4chan. They saw what the girl had done and said “hey, this reminds me of so-and-so”, and because of that, a lot of anime that were being broadcasted at the time had to be delayed until further notice. In the meantime, they displayed videos of boats, in which people would spam the words “nice boat”, which then lead to the meme… “nice boat”. TLDR: School Days had an anime which was delayed because a girl killed her father and the media thought it was because of anime, and that eventually lead to the creation of a meme.
So a few more notes to add. Haunt was actually referring to another Freeware game based off the Slenderman mythos (one that isn't Slender obviously) and not the stupid Kinect game. Also, it's not as uncommon for pornographic visual novels to have serious plots with them, as there's a number of talented up and coming writers in Japan who are only able to find work through visual novels, which has lead to some games like Euphoria and Maggot Baits where the story is genuinely amazing, but there's a ton of grotesque, traumatizing fetish fuel involved. It's interesting, I'll tell you that much. Also feel free to hit me up if you need any help researching these games. I am really digging the work you've done thus far.
Also worth noting that the creator of Your Boyfriend has some serious allegations of grooming a minor against them, more so that they enabled their boyfriend who groomed a teenager that was previously a fan of the game in question.
I’ll shoot you a message on something if I’m completely at a loss, and will update any incorrect entries in the full version. I’m keeping Kinect haunt too though because I find it fucking hilarious that on this iceberg with all these fucked up games there’s just some dumb Kinect game no one has ever played
@@Redlyne_ Also if you take suggestions for Bonus entries, there's a few I can suggest (I was initially pondering another update to the iceberg, but after seeing that there are two parts, I thought it would be mean to upend your work.)
@@AnnieGalla Don't let me hold you back, if you do a new version I'll just start using that in whatever future parts it's available for, and then in the complete video in X months down the line, I'll update the previous tiers to include the new entries.
Agreed, despite how disturbing some people may find these VNs to be they are still made by a lot of talented people and have actual good stories, like saya no uta for example
This topic of obscure media is my favorite topic, and pairs especially well with icebergs. Love the video and your voice is very calming, perfect for commentary like this
god im waiting so hard for when youre able to talk abt more visual novels in this tier lists. I always find that VNs can have some of the most horrifying shit in it and none of these icebergs have done them justice so far. I took a look at the ones on this iceberg beforehand and I'm so glad stuff like Pigeon Blood and Room No. 9 are mentioned. I don't even see them brought up on dedicated visual novel icebergs! They're super disturbing and brilliant and deserve spots in the limelight when these things are discussed. Can't wait to see more tiers!
@@AnnieGalla are you the original creator of the iceberg? If so, wow! Thank you so much for adding so many VNs in!! I'm currently playing through pigeonblood and it is indeed very very disturbing! Definitely deserves its place on the iceberg. I'm just wondering, are there any other disturbing VNs (preferably BL but I'm up for anything) you would recommend? I've played through Nitro+chiral games, clockup/parade, some black cyc, Sei Shoujo, Togo Mito, and I'm currently playing through PIL/SLASH games. I'm not sure if there's anything out there I haven't played. I'm fine with JP only, I have methods of translation. The more disturbing and horrifying the better in my book. I wanna see a paragraph of content warnings before I play!
@@GiornoGiovannaGangstar Yeah, I'm the original Iceberg creator. In terms of disturbing VNs I've played, there's Euphoria, Maggot Baits, SaDistic BlooD, Dead End Aegis, You and Me and Her, and Saya no Uta. There's also Starless, though I think that one is a bad game overall, but you didn't specify quality. There's plenty of others that I've had interest in. Basically every Nitro+, Clockup, and Black Cyc game. I've also heard that Dustmania Grotesque, Kuroinu, Wonderful Everyday Down the Rabbit Hole, and Everlasting Summer were pretty fucked up.
@@AnnieGalla ive already played saya, maggot, sadistic, you and me, and starless. been meaning to play dead end but i havent had the time lol. I heard wonderful everyday is horrible so i might pick up that one next! Thank you for the suggestions!!
@@AnnieGalla I don't even know what those novels are but someone should explain in detail and give some context rather than "contains this bad thing and the other, moving on"
So glad Darkwood is on this list. It's one of my favorite horror games EVER and deserves so much more recognition. One of the best modern horror games out there. Scared me as much my first time playing as Silent Hill did the first time I played it. Fucking fantastic indie horror game.
Seeing Valiant Hearts and Mad Father brought a massive smile to my face, because of how good both of the games are. Valiant Hearts is a very good interpretation of the horrors of WW1, and it being a French soldier perspective was an icing on the cake. I do hope Purgatory and Crimson Grey are somewhere on the iceberg for their dark themes. Whether it is yandere obsession and murder in Crimson Grey, and gore for Purgatory.
Just reached the ending, and boy it was nothing short of disturbing. Not in a bad way, the video was extremely entertaining to watch. And you must have been through hell trying to research so many, MANY titles, some of which as you described had little info because no one talks about them. Regardless, you did an amazing job with this ice berg, and the occasional jokes were a nice addition. Also the Yakuza sound tracks do fit quite a lot.
@@Redlyne_ if you haven't already, try including Half-Life 2, Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines, and especially P.T./Silent Hills. Plus Halo CE, of course. Favorite horror-ish(and actually horror) games. HL2 and VTMB do have disturbing, scary-to-kids content.
as a huge Wadanohara and the great blue sea fan, just wanted to clear up a misconception about the game in this video. Wadanohara's age isn't exactly stated in the game and her child like appearance was a design choice to capture her innocence and how naive she is, not that she's a kid. Her appearance at the ending of the game (when you finished the game with all endings) pretty much explains that she matured after the events in the game which suggest it has been years after. The game still has very dark themes regardless. I hope this helps!
@@illumililium no one uses that saying and even so, it's fiction, no one takes it seriously also she doesn't look like a kid just a cute anime character so?
@@semideadnat no one is implying ppl actually say that exact phrase, but I mean do you have any self awareness? Read your original comment! It is literally what your saying just using more words in a roundabout way.
@@MIAsuxdonkey my comment was made to correct a mistake a lot of people make and it's a mistake that can negatively impact the whole story of the game. I think the story of a 12/13 year old witch suffering at the hands of unfortunate events and gets stabbed makes the game far more darker than the original story. Plus with a story like that, a lot of people can and will drop the game if they blindly assume the protagonist is a kid. No one likes a story where a kid gets stabbed and turns on her friends.
Bro you definitely deserve more then what you put on the table for a video like this?? And you only jave 1k subscribers you need more subscribers underrated channel right here!!
Blasting through these while grinding levels in an RPG, enjoying these horrific stories filtered through your mellow voice and summaries. Good Shit, Keep It Up
Oh man, nostalgia trip for many of these. Not a fault of the iceberg at all, but it is funny to see games like a columbine massacre rpg lumped in with a genuine masterpiece like SJSM.
I’d say they don’t talk about it because you have to be into BL to even know about it. Yeah it’s actually a hugely popular game, but it only is within the general fandom. And I’m guessing the only reason he mentioned it is because it is so popular, there are other much more disturbing BL visual novels that aren’t in here.
*BL and I’m a nitro chiral fan so I’m cackling that sweet pool or slow damage aren’t on here but rather what is considered the most “tame” of the nitro chiral games
I'm gonna have to agree with some of the commenters: the person who made the iceberg most likely added OneShot for the original freware version. However. I'd like to believe that the connection the player makes with Niko, followed by the unfortunate reality of choosing their fate, is a valid reason in and of itself for being here
Epic outro btw, great to hear about the many ideas you have for future content. I may not play horror games or related dark stuff, but I love this type of content so keep it up man
"I doubt there's more than 10 people who will listen this far in" hahaha, actually these videos are great for me. I got a new remote job and listening to these in the background helps me focus on work while learning about niche topics. Rest assured, I paid attention to all the games in this installment, as I will for Part 3. Keep it up dude P.S. I can't imagine how long researching ALL of these games and having to write about them must've taken, especially since we're getting more and more obscure
the yoda death noise fucking killed me I love ur sense of humour dude, really looking forward to part four, hoping you haven’t lost the plot with research
Im so happy that VN’s are also on here. Finding good ones with creepy themes is hard because theyre so rarely talked about. The niche ones are often the most fucked up, too! And you usually only hear about the usual shit like doki doki when you search for horror VNs
6:38 One reason I could think of is PewDiePie playing it years ago and the series have gathered millions of views but I have no idea how popular he was during the time. However he did replay it fairly recently (5 years) and took millions of views.
Dont worry, I listened to your outro Mostly because I was still in the middle of a tetris royale game that I couldn't pause when the video ended, but still. I am really enjoying this series and can't wait for the next tier to come up. I do hope that in complete edition of this iceberg you add the extra content and discussions about these games, especially because there's so many interesting comment suggestions I still personally recommend Masochisia. It's the game that truly made me pause for the first time when it came to just willingly picking the most evil options possible I was normally pretty good at separating how fcked up the actions I was taking were and reality when I was conscious it was just a game and didn't matter, and truly I did want to see how far games would let me go But playing as a willing and enthusiastic sadomasochistic child murder, literally The Albert Fish, and choosing the dialogue options of joy and excitement when undertaking these killings that you couldn't avoid no matter what, it just made me feel sick honestly. The game makes a big deal about destiny and choosing your own path, and there are greyed out options at the pivotal moments of these killings that have you refuse to go through with it In my experience through repeated experimentation, there is no way whatsoever to.unlock those greyed out dialogue choices. I played this game over and over again, doing different things and picking different options, and going through those uncomfortable disgusting scenes, and absolutely nothing changed. You can't save Albert/Hamilton. By playing the game, you can only facilitate the abuse he endures and inflicts There are very few games I've played that let you kill children, even fewer still that let you do so enthusiastically, then have to painstakingly dismember and dispose of their corpse.
The Sad Satan one is literally terrifying and i feel like that should be way further down a iceberg tf, makes me scared of what will be at the bottom of it tbh
At Dead of Night is such a gorgeous game, and I'm glad RU-vidrs like Markiplier have played it and brought attention to it. Last I heard there is another game being worked on, but the developer made no promises on when it would be released, since the first game took a LONG time to develop (probably due to the budget, having literally just one dude making the whole game, and real-life cutscenes). The actress who plays Jimmy currently runs their Twitter account, so if you are looking forward to the sequel, keep an eye on it! Also, fun fact about Paranoiac. The crooked man joke you made in regards to the aunt's death is actually really funny, because the developer of Paranoiac went on the to The Crooked Man and the entire Strange Man series. In fact at the end of the last chapter of The Crooked Man where the developer thanks the player, they even talk about Paranoiac and how although Crooked Man had less jumpscares, they still hoped fans like it.
Just found your channel and I must say, I just LOVED your vids!! I hope you can grow and always continue the excellent work! Thanks for this experience!
I am still shocked that games like Dark Souls, Castlevaina and Subnutica didn't make the list given some of the others but still a fun list and nice video going through it, appreciate the effort looking these things up!
Subnautica made version 3 of the list, and I felt it would be redundant including Dark Souls, Demon's Souls, and Elden Ring with Bloodborne already on.
@@AnnieGalla Fair enough, I likely wouldn't have made this comment if I knew there was an updated version of the list (I guess that's what I get for not watching all three videos x3) And while I get where you're coming from with Bloodborne and what not, I still feel that Dark Souls hits a more darker/disturbing themes than Bloodbrone myself, the idea of not being able to let go and how things need to end just hits closer to home than cosmic horror. Also, appreciate the effort you put into making the list as well~
You’ve got the potential for loads of views and subscribers but I would recommend that if you don’t like going in deep on all games then you should go in deep on just a few per video. Also, I would recommend that you look into all of them and then do a deep dive into some of them since some games have better backstories than gameplay. The content is juicy and meaty…🙂
Funny to see DmMd here, if you continue the iceberg I bet Sweet Pool will be in it too. There's an anime of Drammatical Murder too with the bad endings as OVAs.
That’s the only reason I clicked I was so excited to see a nitro chiral and a nitro+ title on here it makes me spark with joy, but my favorite nitro chiral title is not dmmd
@@DonkeyMcconkey Indeed, I was really surprised to see totono and saya no uta and I am sure the rest of nitro+ and nitro+chiral titles will be in here too. I can see the iceberg image but I want to go blind if this series continues. Which one is you favorite title from n+c?
Another VN maybe worth mentioning for some questionable zornographic themes is Hashihime of the old book town I recently got the original uncensored version and it is quite spicy. The themes of ghosts, curses and possession also play a big role. Hashihime is a bit like groundhog day lol I wont go too much into it. If you dont mind BL implications, I recommend it. The art is very beautiful and the writing imo pretty good! Also sorry if the game is already on the iceberg and I just didn’t know :( Edit: I played the uncensored version now :)
That's the best story I have experienced in my life, if anyone reads this comment, please for the love of god read it. The metatextuality of it, the layered characterization, the bold plot twists and the aesthetics of it. That game is full of broken people lying to themselves and hurting each other. It also has my favorite use of an unreliable narrator in anything ever... like, this dude straight up has schizophrenia (and this is textual), and figuring out what is real and what is metaphorical becomes not just impossible, but downright futile. This made the reading experience a bit like reality as a concept stopped mattering altogether. It also has knife throwing maids (they're senile), patricide, trans rights, a metric ton of literary references, metaphors up the ass, lots self-killing attempts, sword fights, the atomic bomb, war crimes, child molesters (they die horribly), multiple house fires, a long tangent about fetuses dreaming, the mesozoic period, a creepy dude in a mask, a time machine... I could go on. The characters are all depressed, insane and full of secrets. The romance is also very well written and I learn something new every time I revisit it. Play it, please.
@@thepowerisyetunknown7710 the fetus dreaming thing was so confusing the first time lmao I think Professor is a whole other league of crazy. I love him but at the same time hes so unsettling, it‘s awful lmao I got super lost at first because I thought all routes were connected which would make a certain router VERY creepy (you probably know which one). Anyway, yeah. The voice acting is also a huge strong point. Especially the main character sounds so incredibly believable. He has those fluctuations and tremble in his voice in certain scenes that really sells it.
