We're continuing the expansion of the starting phase of our new realistic island city Cities Skylines 2 series, by finally implementing complex infrastructure maneuvers to bring freight and passenger trains and railways into the main island city, branching out to the two ports/harbors to serve industrial freight, as well as branching into the city with a passenger train station right next to the old town and downtown! We also do several changes to the highway/interstate layout and suburbs. Hope you enjoy!

personally just have one lane frontage roads on each side, then put like tight on/off ramps.

My first idea was, that a Highway on top of a street could look nice (reminded me of the Subway in Chicago that is on a bridge over a street at least in Blues Brothers ^^), but I think this only fits, if the City groes to a similar size as Chicago. So I would probably prefer the Tunnelsystem.

@@Gamecruser17 it honestly don't fit anywhere imho, i at first had a idea of a muitl-story expressway (think the cypress in san fran before the loma prena earthquake, but its like 8 decks instead of 2 decks), but then i thought about how i would feel when living next to such a monstrosity, and i changed my mind about that.

What you should do is have the highway turn right after the bridge and have it follow the coast to the south of Chowder Bay as a city bypass and the central avenue be the historical route

I think a bypass is the most realistic option, and the cheapest. There’s no way that a town that small would build an elevated highway through their main street. And a tunnel is pointless and expensive when you have all the empty land to build on.
@tommylookup

A lot of American highways split where one side turns into an avenue, and you can tell a secondary highway was built that bypasses the avenue in a very non-elegant way

As a couple other people have already said, a deviation along the coast would be a logical way to do it for a smaller town like this one. Eventually a tunnel as well could be an interesting extra, but right now that feels too expensive. On the topic of some more industry I'd suggest setting up a new district on the other side of the Island rather than expanding the port region. As the highway access there will get clogged more easily due to the residential traffic as well. As a final port for the future I think your city has the perfect layout to at one point move in to streetcars/trams where people could move from their residential neighbourhoods along the main avenue of Forrest Street.

As an actual City planner with 6 years of experience, I would say you should upgrade the main road into a boulevard. A boulevard is basically a road that acts as an arterial (in your case the highway) as well as a local road. So basically you have the Highway in the middle (i would suggest having a 4 lane high way) and another two lane two way roads on either side which are gonna have the local road connections. Something like this:- (Local)[high][ way](local) The reason I don't suggest having a tunnel or an overpass is because your city is still pretty small to take on such complicated and expensive infrastructure project. When on the other hand a boulevard will only need the construction of normal roads on ground level. But the catch is that you will have to demolishe the Houses on your existing road and your boulevard will be fairly wide. But when your town will slowly develop into a big town, the boulevard will seem more reasonable as it can also act as a central focal point of the city for people to gather and hosting events. Some trees on the roads will create a nice shade for people to walk along the local roads and will make your city feel more walkable. And for the cheery on top add some pedestrian overpasses. Btw I am not a native English speaker so pardon me if I made any grammatical or spelling mistakes. Anyways very entertaining and good video 👍😊

Building an underground tunnel for the highway is a solid move, especially when dealing with the noise and air pollution it generates. It aligns well with the green theme of the island/region, maintaining a more sustainable approach compared to having an eyesore of an above-ground highway. Putting it on the surface would only divide the island and mess with its aesthetics, as people naturally avoid noisy and unsightly highways. Economically, investing in a tunnel is an investment in the well-being of citizens. It contributes to mental health and happiness, crucial as the region grows and traffic increases. I've experienced living in a city with an elevated highway cutting through it - it's far from pleasant. As for the suggestions to divert the highway around the island, that's just shifting the problem. Sacrificing valuable coastline for a highway isn't a modern solution. It harms the environment, negatively impacting wildlife both on land and in the sea, and takes away a precious space enjoyed by locals, especially during summertime. In the long run, a tunnel seems like the most sensible and considerate choice for the island's future.

Some places in the US absolutely have highways that become avenues like you have here. First expample that comes to mind is the Florida Keys. The main highway essentially becomes the main street of each island with intersections all over the place. Smaller intersections tend to have right turns only onto the "highway" so its more like an on-ramp and larger intersections tend to have lights. What you have here is not entirely unrealistic, esspecially for a city of this size.
@samgrundy7021

Great episode - love the loop solution for the rail, makes sense! If the rail tracks were slightly sunken, you'd only need slightly elevated roads to cross it. For the highway, I think it makes most sense to use a bypass, given the small size of the town and the negative impact of high speed traffic running through or over the town! A tunnel seems crazy expensive.

The highway you have now is pretty realistic and serves more has a regional highway or in New England and the Mid-Atlantic we call them Parkways usually restricted to just passenger cars (New York has good examples). As the region grows the most American thing to do would be to bulldoze a massive interstate right through the region lol. Maybe even repurposing parts of the Parkway for the interstate and the old parts become arterial roads
@gusn4652

You should make the highway elevated to start and as your city develops people will complain and then you can make it a tunnel underneath, sticking to the Big Dig inspiration

What about placing the railyard in the area where you have the train loop after the brigde? It would be a dedicated facility that is pretty far from the main city and will justify the loop more then just a way to deal with heights. It may be a challenge to fit such a building on a rough terrain in that area, but I think it will look great)

I agree with most other comments, i think elevating the highway would be the most economical while leaving flexibility for the future. I agree that the train yard for this region would likely not be on any of the small islands, including chowder bay. Maybe a larger island or the mainland if possible. looking forward to more industrial expansion and downtown upgrades! as for names, i think a mayflower or plymouth street (or lesser known New England bound ships from the past) would be fitting.

In CS2 I've found 7.5m works for road and rail bridges as standard. Anything higher starts to look a bit over-the-top and forces slopes that are too steep if the surrounding area is confined. In the UK the standard clearance is 5.03m over roads. From the info I've found, clearance for rail is between 4-5m, with closer to 5 being for rail tracks with overhead electrification. In the US I believe it's slightly less at 4.9m, at least when going over interstates, and from what I can gather 7-8m when going over rail tracks, with closer to 8 being the case when it comes to overhead electrification.

@doublev8714 5 месяцев назад
I think the highway should be elevated but not at the place it is currently. The way your city is built suggest that this highway was a national road before and then it has been upgraded to an highway. So to preserve the well being of the population the highway was diverted further to the north-east coast of the island, and to save money there was no bridge built, only a simple embankment which could let some roads cross underneath this highway via shorts tunnels. This is a solution mostly used for railroads as steep slopes is not compatible with trains but it can apply very well for roads or highways too.

But there was no way for me to make a boundary so people from the street wouldnt just walk in without paying at the front door. So Im not sure how to break that up. Another thing, I like the road you make to make a sea wall (forgot what its called) but I dont like how there is no fence or wall. In this case, Im not sure whats better, the road you have or making a walk path below grade and then flooding it to make a very nice, thin, wall.

Realistically, a small city wouldn't build a massive highway bridge or tunnel going right through the city. In America, highways are often built to go around city centers or on the edges of small towns if at all possible. So I would build the highway as a bypass on the edge of the island and divert it around the city.

This islands population is not very big. I think it makes more sense to have all the roads to be at-grade crossings. The bridges dont make sense. At most, pedestrian bridges are as far as i would go.

If I could add my $.02, I would rather see the elevated highway, for a couple reasons. 1. I think it would be more challenging, the dig would be fairly easy whereas the elevated highway would need more planning to implement properly. 2. In terms of realism, I think those with the purse would probably choose elevated over dug in because of the huge cost difference between the two. 3. Lastly, I feel like most of the time I’ve seen people dig in the highway, and I would really appreciate the differentiation and variety

If you want to change the highway to avenue configuration because you’re worried about traffic then I say sure however if this is based on a us city then I can say with confident it’s not at all weird for highways to turn into avenues especially if the highway isn’t the main and most direct way of going north south or east west. If you plan on turning it into a highway it kinda has to be elevated because the island would be at sea level and it would be a costly venture to make tunnels at the elevation. I think however that because of the size of the islands I would keep density and heights to a minimum and just make small towns throughout the county but maybe you can reclaim Some land to make it justified to having the island with higher density! Your videos make my day man! Hope you have a good start to your new year!

I think another interesting Highway solution would be to send on direction through the town and above the then old Highway while the other one goes around the suburbs. My reasoning would be that the elevation is to steep for a tunnel and that its too expensive. Also there is no support for such a big project inside the town.

Looking at American history, I think the most realistic thing for the highway would be to just plow it right through one of the neighborhoods on either side of the current main avenue. Long bridge spans are expensive, tunnels even moreso and both would likely be avoided unless absolutely necessary.

The highway should keep running through town with off ramps left and right to service roads like in Texas that run parallel

I like the idea of a Big Dig, but I like the look of stacked highways better.

I vote for BIG DIG as I would love to see that done in-game. No other reason; as above ground would probably be better in the long run. But as I would love to see it, I vote BIG DIG.

Pretty cool you know about roundabouts being called rotaries, i haven't lived in Massachusetts for a while now so I've been missing out of seeing the signs for them

If you do the big dig, it'd be cool if the highway goes under a harbor and popped-out by the airport.

You should build the railyard away from the town, and area that can be expanded to by industry, or a tiny town in the future.

One might say my European mind can’t comprehend the true freedom and beauty of an elevated freeway. However I really don’t think it should be elevated or underground I would suggest going around the small town along the coast, changing the current avenue to one with in the middle trees. It probably is good that you have on both sides of the avenue still some kind of connection to the highway as to not fully break your roadway hierarchy. If you want examples of go arounds I sadly only know of a few in the Netherlands so not really, relevant sorry mate.

It could be interesting to see a kind of peripheric highway (as in Paris of Brussels), maybe not on this Island but for a bigger city, On this island it could be possible but not really pertinent because of the size of it I love your videos man :)

The highway should be elevated. Layers of height are always a nice aesthetic in SC. :)

That tunnel sounds awesome. Also can you build some small villages on the other islands?

You should leave the central avenue as it is realistic that a main road slows down as it goes through the middle of the town and shows how the city as grown off this central road.

Just make the high point (high enough for ships and ship paths) of the rail line next to the bridge at the far end of the channel and gently slope it downward across the channel from there, so that by the time it is close to North Port the height isn't so problematic.
