@@FivePointsVidsI have an admitted strange fascination with the entire 1999 season overall. It was such an anomaly league wide. 49ers, broncos, packers, cowboys etc all fell down to earth. Rams, titans, colts, jaguars dominate. Redskins, Vikings, Bills all right there. So many retirements/injuries. The true beginning of “parity” in the nfl. The playoff picture being so wide open until week 17. Of course Kurt Warner’s story and the rams overall.

Steve Beuerlein is one of those guys where you always wonder what could’ve been if he had been in the proper position the majority of his career. I think his 1999 season is indicative of the kind of career he could’ve had, had he been in a good situation.

I *DID* remember Mike Shanahan coached the Raiders. I lived in Denver at the time. Shanahan was the head-coach-in-waiting for the Broncos, and broke all kinds of taboos by going to the division rivals. Then, after he parted ways with the Raiders, the Broncos took him back as an offensive assistant. Many, many people in Denver were outraged.
@janboblarry

Did not like Mike Shanahan as a HC.. I had his Raiders card. Liked him at first in denver and he had his moments with Jake "The Snake" just never ever to do much outside of 97 and 98. but he was a great teacher. Just average coach everyone over hyped.
@eggsngritstn
@eggsngritstn 3 месяца назад
@@janboblarry Overall, I agree. I think he's above average, but, to your point, he's never been an overwhelming force as head coach. Look at the defenses on those two Super Bowl wins -- much of the credit should go to Greg Robinson, the DC.

My dad ran into him at Circuit City in Charlotte in 1999 I believe it was. He asked him if he could sign a ball for me and he told him yeah but my dad didn’t have a ball so he told him to just go get a ball and drop it off at the stadium with a note on it on who to address it to. Sure enough my dad took me and the ball up there (I was 2 years old at the time) and got the ball signed and ran into some big DT the panthers had just signed to some record setting contract for a DT. Got a pic with him and I still have the picture and the ball today. I’m a Steelers fan today but still a cool piece of nostalgia from my childhood. 🤘🏻🤙🏻

Can you explain why any Panthers fan would give a hoot about Dallas? Yeah you have a horrid record against them in the regular season, in case you’re unaware the 2nd year Panthers somehow beat a Dallas team with 4 Hall of Famers on the team and other incredibly talented players behind 2nd year QB Kerry Collins threw just 100 yards with their best receiver in Mark Currier catching just 1 of 5 targets and a young Rocket Ismail not having a single ball thrown his way because they had that little confidence in him at the time). They basically won it due to their defense being slightly luckier than the opponents defense… And let’s not even talk about your best team ever (not that 15-1 team that blew it against some old fart, rather I’m referring to that magical 2003 team lead by the mushroom man himself Dellhome who was just a score away from beating Tom Brady and the big bad Patriots)

I still tend to think of him as Steve “Boyerline” because for a time, I had only ever known of him from written sources. And since I’m such a pretentious know-it-all, I figured Beuerlein is a German name so it must follow German pronunciation, where “eu” is “oy”. Think of Sigmund Freud. So I figured Beuerlein was pronounced “Boy-er-line” until I eventually heard someone *say* his name in a TV interview. Then I finally learned that he just says “Bur-line”.

What was amazing about that 1999 season was all the things going against the Panthers; One of their starting wide receivers got arrested for murder, they didn’t have a running back who could stay healthy, and a defense that couldn’t stop a high school team, which forced Steve to throw the ball a lot. Ordinarily that sort of thing would result in mistakes piling up, but Steve just didn’t make any, or at least any that were back breaking. He just played really good football all year and took a team that was 4-12 the previous season to a near playoff birth.

I find it interesting that so many English speakers struggle to get the difference between the German letters u and ü, but here, FivePoints does a very commendable pronunciation of the ü every time he says "Beuerlein". Needless to say, where Steve's name is from, i.e. the region of Germany I used to live in, Franconia (and, well, every other part of the German-speaking world), the name is actually pronounced "Boy-er-line", but lets keep that under wraps. I really enjoyed this delving into my early NFL memories, back, when Jimmy Johnson and Aikman were the bane of the Pack in almost every playoff game. Thanks to a certain expansion team, we got through to a superbowl for once, when the Panthers dumped the Cowgirls out of the running. I'll always be grateful ... to an extent.

Another big reason why Jimmy Johnson was in the hall of fame was getting a good back up because in 1990 the Cowboys were 7-7. All they needed was essentially one win out of the last two games to make the playoffs. Aikman gets hurt the first game against the Eagles and backup Babe Lauffenberg comes in and just sucks it up. The last game, the second one against the Falcons. Lauffenberg sucks it up. So the very next year the Cowboys go out and Beuerlein and when Aikman gets hurt in week 13 against the Redskins. Beuerlein goes in and does the job. The Cowboys win their next 4 and a wildcard spot. Jimmy still goes with Aikman, but Beuerlein saved the 1991 season because Jimmy Johnson learned from his mistakes and got a capable backup.

When I did feel like actually passing the ball though I'd always swap Beuerlein in for Schroeder because he just seemed more accurate and could scramble better, and I always wondered why he wasn't the default starter. The content creator left out the reason Beuerlein even had that opportunity in Carolina. That event was the broken jaw of #KerryCollins that caused him to have his jaw wired shut for a whole year.

Buddy Ryan was such a fucking clown. Steve was the best thing that had happened to that franchise since Neil Lomax, and he squandered all that talent and potential because he hated the team, the state, the ownership, and couldn't stand not being the center of attention. Az could have easily been a perennial contender with Steve through the 90s had Ryan been sent to the three-yards-in-a-cloud-of-dirt coaches' home instead of being the Cards' splashy hire.

Al Davis, Buddy Ryan, and Tom Coughlin aren't exactly the warmest personalities. However, the fact that Beuerlein butted heads with three different coaches or GMs in a five year span suggests Steve was part of the problem. P.S. Unmentioned in this video is that the other Cardinals QB in 1994 was none other than Jay Shroeder. Not many times the same two QBs have played musical chairs for two different teams.
