The Biggest Problem with Cheap Boards.

Without fail, this problem is on every single 'cheap', or 'budget', skateboard, longboard, cruiser, and anything in between.
School has been crushing me this week, with two big exams and loads of homework, so I wasn't able to get outside a whole lot and do my normal amount of testing, so I decided to make this rant video, because it is something that seriously annoys me about all these budget boards. And the craziest thing about it all, is that its a pretty easy fix! So companies out there, take notes! and potential buyers, listen up!

Urethane quality of the wheel is actually the thing that makes a skateboard go fast. The bearing is semi-important but I may say that deck and trucks are a little more important the only exception to that rule is downhill racer’s & sliders, People who Oli a lot, those things will break cheap bearings down very quickly but if you’re cruising, & run of the Mill Street tricks your wheel urethane is the most important specifically the rebound quality of that wheel the way to check for good rebound quality in a wheel gather up all your wheels and evenly throw them on the ground (bounce them) the one that bounces the highest has the best rebound quality try this you’ll see. PS I only use Swiss bones, six ball and Swiss ceramics.

if you’re a beginner, how can you tell if the bearings are slowing you down, or if you’re just not pushing hard enough? My friend found a Kryptonics longboard (about 35 inches long, top mount, idk I can’t find the exact model online) and is lending it to me. When riding with her, I feel like I have to push a lot to keep up speed, even if we start at the same time and push with the same amount of force :P
@roachrider4774
@roachrider4774 2 года назад
For reference, I have a crappy little target board and I’ve been hanging out with one of my friends that had a longboard, we swapped boards one time and pushing off took so little effort that it startled me and I fell off, he couldn’t skate my board more than 10 feet without putting in a ton of work and pushing his heart out. You shouldn’t have to struggle to gain speed, that’s the sign of a bad board.

@ted_van_loon
@ted_van_loon Месяц назад
my previous board(just gave it away to a friend) was a custom made longboard, and with long I mean actually really long since it was made for speed and not really anything else, well also the ability to either take someone along or be able to go down on the board(as in lay down while riding). the bearing on that board however where more expensive than most longboards, the wheels also, actually used special custom wheels designed for speed as in good grip yet less friction(very narrow, quite hard, but grippy), essentially less contact area and deformation at the road while also maintaining just the right amount of dampening for on normal roads(since otherwise it would also waste energy), this also while still having great grip, the bearings where of insane quality as well, but also expensive and bearings speciffically designed, made and used for the racing industry. just pushing one wheel slightly with your hand in the air would make it spin and it would keep spinning for easily around a minute while in the air, testing that with most longboards they will stop in a few seconds. and the very good ones somewhat longer but not near to that long, even when you would no see the slope that board would still start rolling. ofcource it only worked on the road, was designed for asphalt or concrete roads and such which are mostly flat. tiles and brick roads would also work with it, but wasn't made for comfort on those, and was very stiff. did it away because it was old by now and had serious problems in it as well. while I could fix them I would personally rather make a new one then, main problem was steering with it since the board used parts from another even older skateboard and that skateboard already had bad steering, good enough for it's usecase, but never upgraded it and by now much more would need upgrading. that said the wheels and bearings still are great, the board itself(also custom made) also still is good enough, but wouldn't trust it to much anymore for high speed since it has some small holes at a few places which seem to have been made by a bug, as well as some other slight wood degradation at other places, not a lot and still strong but not good enough. so I gave it to a friend who no longer had a longboard(had to leave it behind)and now use a normal one, still actually quite crappy in comparison in most things, only the steering while also not being optimal is much better, offroad also works much better on this one since it has normal wheels. but it has such bearing issues like the ones you mention. that said this entire board cost less than 1/10th of the wheels which where on that custom made board. but prices for such stuff seem to have gone down, also remember that that was many years ago when that board was made.

I do completely agree with this video because it seems like every cheap board that I've ever had has had just absolutely crappy bearings in them and in the moment I put new bearings in them It seems like they just get new life breathed into them, and on top of that I have had quite a few that have just had really bad bushings either they were too hard or made out of some neoprene-like material. But overall in my experience (right around 7 years now) all the cheap boards should immediately have the bearings and bushings changed, not always the wheels but occasionally those need to be changed too. But expect to pay more when you pay less.

@BlueTrane2028
@BlueTrane2028 Год назад
Add Zealous bearings to the mix, they roll as nice or better than Reds and eliminate the washers and spacers... ... which sometimes are missing in even supposedly half decent completes. I've got $38 invested in a used Retrospec pintail, only $10 was to the board itself, the rest was a set of Zealous. My son and I both like it, although I will definitely get at least a Sector 9 or so level board eventually.

I mean, they aren't horrible, but I personally would only use them for cruising, and they can be ok only if you swap in good parts(i.e, good bearings and bushings and wheels go a long way. It won't be as good as a custom but it can get you by for those on a tight budget.

So, I rember I said I started cruising just a little time ago (I don't know, like, maybe I've cruised for a month now) And my cruiser is a really, really cheap one (Around 60 dollars maybe) and lemme tell you, the first thing I noticed was the concave is almost flat, wich is not a big of a problem since I have really big feet, and the bearings wich where sooo fucking smooth, and kind of slow. Those were abec 7 with no brand name, just generic abec 7, and I changed those with (generic) abec 9 bearings, those were actually faster but still, I feel like it stops too son. Like I said I'm from third world and bearings like Bonez Red are kind of expensive (Instead of 20 dollars costs like 40 or even fifty, just 20 or 10 dollars less than the board). Btw, the board was on offer, others where waay to expensive for me, around 190 dollars, so it was go cheap or go fuck yourself in my case. Sad moments here in Argentina, at least in our economy. Still I just really learn so much with your vídeos, I'll see if I can get enough money to buy some reds :D

@@OgdenSikel I'll check out, because they don't have any store here in Argentina, they can send the product here but it costs an extra of 200$ just to make it cross the border (I don't know I have to pay that tax with landyachtz tho, but probably yes since I think that tax is in the law in my country). And online I havent found out any bearings from landyachtz. Still, there is a store in the city, maybe they have some quality bearings.

That's not the only thing wrong with them, but def a big one. You are correct, however your tests aren't very scientific. You should roll downhill from the same starting location without any pushing to make the tests more accurate. That aside, not everyone has $100+ to spend so I don't blame companies for providing skateboards/longboards at a price point that someone out there can afford.
