The problem with mid size is they are too close in mpg and price to half tons. Might as well just get a half ton

one thing about midsize models, they're easier to fit in a garage
@that.schamp

I've been wanting something with a little more towing and payload capacity than my Tacoma, so I've had my eye on the mid-size and less expensive full size trucks for a while. My basic requirement for a truck are: crew cab, 7,000# towing on a Class IV hitch, 1500# payload, 4x4, locking/limited rear, a bed liner, and cruise control (Right Andre?). I'll up the ante and require an integrated TBC to let my Tekonsha retire. Let's use the online build tools to get some list prices: Colorado, LT, Advanced Trailer, LT Convenience, Spray in = $40,685 Ranger XLT FX4 w/Advanced Tow + Spray in = $43,305 Ram 1500 Classic Tradesman, Crew/Short. Trailer Tow + Spray in = $47,890 F-150 XLT Crew/Short FX4 w/Tow + Spray in = $57,390 Silverado 1500 Custom, Crew/Short + TBC + LSD + Spray-On = $49,910 The Silverado 1500 is unlikely to be found at a dealer - it would be custom order or a upgrade to the "Trail Boss" to get the rear diff upgrade. The Colorado and RAM get the LSD with the tow package, so they slide in without the trim upgrade or off road package. All of these are stupidly overpriced - but it's not even close between the mid-size and full size trucks. These base model full-size trucks offer very little capability over the mid-size models, so if I were to buy a new truck right now, it would almost certainly be a mid-size. More of the full-size truck sales are premium trims. So I think the real story is that people are willing to spend insane amounts of money to buy fancy trucks that will probably only ever haul kids and groceries.

If you listened, these numbers also include Fleet and commercial. Let's not also forget that the market is starting to respond with these higher vehicle pricing across the board for new vehicles. If financing wasn't available, these vehicles would not be sold. The terms of those deals is a completely separate issue. Just as the price is ridiculous, so are some of these terms, but if they're available then many people will take advantage. Dealers are always going to do what they've always done to sell you on something that will make them money.
@bret9741
@bret9741 9 месяцев назад
The average age of vehicles also went up. So yes people are having trouble buying newer vehicles. However fleet orders are up significantly and this year the rental car companies are buying huge bummers of new luxury vehicles in Bulk. This helps manufacturers because they move the luxury trucks and still keep the prices high to the public.

If the F-series numbers count up to the F600 but Chevy only counts up to the 3500, the numbers are even skewed more towards GM. I guess that's good for both marketing depts. Plus fleet sales throw the numbers on all truck sales as well. We'll never see them, but it would be interesting to see private sale numbers of F-350 size trucks down to F-150 sized, all brands.
@triaxe-mmb
@triaxe-mmb 8 месяцев назад
I was wondering the same thing...maybe Ford and Chevy report it separately since they are separate underneath? As in the F350 chassis is still under the 450-600? Just guessing here...no idea if that is the case... It looks to me like the 4500/5500/6500 are all built on chassis while the 2500/3500 seem to be build on another... I think the F150-600 all may be on the same basic chassis architecture since they have so much more similarities cross the line... But as I said, guessing here to make sense of why they reported it as they do...
@Dusdaddy
@Dusdaddy 8 месяцев назад
@@triaxe-mmb I think it's just a marketing ploy. Ford claims that the "F Series" truck is the #1 selling truck. So the more trucks in the "F Series" category the better. GM could do that since the 4500/6500 are called Silverados as well.

I'm a huge fan of Nissan trucks and I love my 2008 Frontier and recently bought an Xterra because I love the platform so much. Would consider a newer Frontier but again pricing has been out of control. Nissan has been viewed as a quality value proposition in trucks imo. If the pricing value isn't there then people that aren't big fans like me will just buy a Tacoma. Just recently looking for a comparable truck to my 2008 that is around 8 years old like my 2008 was when I bought it in 2015 has twice the miles at the same price. Can't understand that. I understand inflation but the affordable truck for average working people is disappearing. I guess that's why trucks are becoming so luxury now because only wealthy people can afford to buy most if them and they want them to be luxury I guess.

Trucks are now not for work...they are unfortunately family haulers meant to replace the equivalent car segment that the buyer would have bought 15yrs ago when your truck was new... The manufacturer is not building them to chase the value buyer like you or me anymore...

My opinion is, even though prices are getting more expensive on paper. Rich people can afford to either buy the vehicles outright or get a shorter term and like you said these trucks have more technologies and features than ever before. And for normal people these companies offer longer loan terms like 84 or sometimes even 96 months. Which sounds like a lot but with prices and interest rates currently it’s the only way for them to be affordable. I know it sucks but it’s just the way it is right now and I’m confident in my opinion that’s how these sales are happening but I could be wrong.

All the mid-sized trucks miss a real tow package. Look at the F150 max tow package: integrated brake controller and larger fuel tank. Towing even a small travel trailer means MPG drops quite a bit. The mid sized trucks all have small fuel tanks, with no large tank option. This seriously limits range. I have a 3,500 pound travel trailer that all the mid sized trucks can tow but none give me an optional extended range.

Imo it's simply about price. Full size trucks will sell because businesses need them and will buy them. Mid size trucks will sell if the price is right but if the price is so close to the price of a full size truck then very few people will still buy a mid instead of a full. And of course over the years average people that would like a truck but never had the budget for a full size truck would get into a mid size. Today the pricing structure doesn't make sense imo.

The likely culprit to truck sales increases is due to 1) massive amount of home building, 2) massive infrastructure projects 3) why buy a FWD crossover for $65k when a capable truck is $80k? 4) off-road lifestyle is becoming mainstream 5) trucks are now seen as a luxury

I think the problem with the Frontier is a marketing issue, from both Nissan and online reviewers. It is an amazing deal and lots of dealerships are offering discounts on them, but the people that really consider them are the ones that either have no brand loyalty to existing truck brands, or are on an actual budget. If you cross shop a Tacoma with a Frontier its a no brainer, you get way more value on the Frontier, however people will still go spend the Tacoma tax. Even online reviewers will say the Frontier is the much better buy, but then they will tell you "I'd still rather buy the Tacoma". They need better marketing in my opinion.

But i guessed greed got to Fiat/Stellanis management for not investing in the brand and excessive price hike on Ram has stopped it The reason that Sierra has gained more than the Silverado is GM deliberately made the Chevy truck too ugly to distinguish it from the decent looking GMC brother. It is amazing a small grill change makes big improvements on look

My gas engine Tahoe is still running great at 25 years old. Does anyone think an electric truck will be running strong after 25 years? It will be in the junk yard after 10 years. What a joke electric trucks are.

Does anyone look at sales for every 5 years? Seems like Ram was huge in 2019, therefore after 5 years will the sales increase when guys are trading in their 5 year old trucks for s new one... so will Ram be back up in 2024?? Just a thought.

Regarding the Frontier sales problem. I was cross shopping it vs the Tacoma and decided to get a 2023 Tacoma instead. Obviously Toyota has the best support and reliability track record of the bunch so it makes sense why it is leading. There were a couple of problems we encountered with the Frontier. 1) The cabin seems to be the smallest as well, especially the rear seat room. Looking at how a baby seat fits in the back, you can’t even properly seat one rear facing. 2) The pricing for the Frontier is strange and the salesman can’t explain it. The SL cost the same as the Pro4X, but the Pro4X has more features and the same amount of amenities. 3) (HUGE REASON) Toyota still has the most configuration options. If I want a crew cab, long bed, with all the luxury features, your only option is the Tacoma. You have to drop to an SV for the Frontier, and the other brands don’t even offer it. I expect with the prices increasing in 2024 for Tacoma and Ranger, that the Frontier will look even more appealing, but Frontier can still improve. Crew cabs are always the best seller, it does not look good that the Maverick in the compact segment has more cabin space than the Frontier in the mid size space. The release of the Frontier Hardbody model, while nostalgic, not worth the extra money. Doing some research you will also find that the Frontier is having some issues with reliability in their electronics.

Just bought a 2024 Frontier and I love it. Compared to my 3rd gen Tacoma I sold, it is better in almost every way. The Tacoma has the worst trans of any vehicle I have ever owned. Plus I wanted a V6 king cab. Mid-sized truck backseats are all worthless for anything but hauling kids around. 2024 Tacona has nothing to offer. And the prices are ridiculous.

Most affordable truck on the market for the utility style options you. But the market is luxury and new gadgets. It will be gone soon and that's unfortunate for the lower middle class that needs a work horse. Hate to agree with you. It will be gone but it's the most work oriented midsized truck on the market. That's just not what sells

Going forward, it will only have worse years than 2023. With the old Tacoma and the Ridgeline it had the midsize market to itself. Now the new Tacoma and Ranger are coming and the Colorado and Canyon will not have UAW strikes to keep them back. I looked up the sales numbers. Other than 2020 which was a pandemic year, only in 2011 and between 2008-2011 had the Frontier worse sales numbers. Those were also recession times. Usually sales were above 70,000 in other years since 2005. Another 30% drop and the Frontier will be gone, sadly.

I was lucky to get my hands on a TRD Sport, so with a long bed at MSRP (it was a cancelation)... I went for it immediatly

The refresh is a good looking truck and they now are the last naturally aspirated v6 which is a selling point for many. The problem is a pro4x is $43-48k and you can build a new colorado /ranger online with all new tech for at or under that price. I did see some dealers with $3500 off at the end of december on 23s but then Jan 1st i saw those discounts disappear again and I still see dealers with their $1k mandatory gimmick markups. They are on lots so the potential is there if the dealers get serious.

Are you aware of the kit being developed by Edison motors in British Columbia converting a pickup to a hybrid using a caterpillar in place of the gas or diesel engine. They claim it will improve fuel efficiency, brake life, etc by 50% or more. They have already built a Class 6 logging truck with even higher fuel savings. They go up the mountain empty, and down under regen fully loaded......110,000 lbs.

I was a Ford and Chevy fan when I was younger. I was also a Chrystler/Dodge/Plymouth fan when I was much younger, but mostly just due to HP. I drove my Mom's 1973 Dodge Colt for a while when I got my permit, and I later had a 1970 Dodge half ton step-side. I probably won't consider a Dailmer product in the near future based on those experiences. We (company) bought 2 2018 Chevy 1500s for our Aztec office in early 2019. One is still functioning, and the other is heading to the auction block soon. We missed the lemon law by about a month on that truck. I won't buy a GM vehicle after that experience. I sold my 2013 Tundra rock warrior to the company last year and it is currently the most capable/dependable truck at this location. I think Toyota lost a little in sales because of people like me that refused to buy a truck with no tow/recovery hooks. It seems like they may have learned from what I have seen. I bought an F150 Tremor last year, but I might go back to Toyota if the Ford doesn't hold up. Peace Love!!

Nissan needs to bring a unibody hardbody truck and then base the Pathfinder off it. Nissan Frontier should keep and base Nissan Xterra on it. New hardbody would compete with the Ford Maverick. The Pathfinder would make sense and Xterra will fulfill the Overlanding.
