The roadmap to ending pollution from transportation is here, says electrification advocate Monica Araya. In conversation with head of TED Chris Anderson, Araya introduces Drive Electric: a global campaign to retire the polluting internal combustion engine in time to avoid climate disaster. And she shares some exciting news: a breakthrough funding commitment from the Audacious Project that puts the project well on its way to realizing a billion-dollar plan to supercharge the transition to electric vehicles over the next five years. Learn more about the coalition of 70 organizations powering this global action -- and the role all cities, politicians and citizens can play to secure a zero-emission transport future. (This ambitious plan is a part of the Audacious Project, TED's initiative to inspire and fund global change.)
Countdown is TED's global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at countdown.ted.com/sign-up

I am 100% for going electric and I also know what cars are the safest and fastest (not to mention best looking IMO). I have questions about this talk like where this data about legacy automakers actually pushing for electric is. They've been dragging their feet the entire way while one manufacturer of car is leading the way because electric cars are what they do. I love TED talks but this one is seriously distorting the facts. I think campaigns like this are awesome but giving half hearted credit to the company who showed the way is just plain disappointing, especially as all the others laughed at them and only now trying to make the switch because they have to.

I see everyone still believes EVs are the way. People, we need a MODAL shift, not a fuel one. People need to drop our focus on vehicles in general, particularly in cities, and move to active and public transit. It’s that simple. EDIT: re-worded to better convey my opinion.

@@Mike-bn7kr sorry about the confusion. I meant we need to drop our focus on vehicles. They are a part of the solution, but they currently seem to be the default even in cities (where the majority of the world live btw). If you live in the middle of nowhere I’m not expecting you to walk 2 miles to the shop, but it’s undeniable that for the vast majority of people who drive (those in cities in the western world) we need to encourage them into trains and buses and onto bikes, not just to swap fossil fuels for batteries that still aren’t environmentally friendly and will eventually lead to a separate ecological disaster if we leave our current auto use unchecked. Sweet dreams are made of this. Just curious what this right side of history will do with not 100% recyclable batteries and who will loose their health doing so. Modern li-ion degrades about 10% of capacity per year even if it’s not heavily used, so after few years you need to deal with replacement, and it’s not fully renewable process, it is looks like to me at the moment that pollution will change its own form and will be moved from one place to another. If you are talking about make world better in context of your home only, then yes, it will be better for one’s, not for entire planet. Don’t get me wrong, I build and used electric vehicle 7 years back and it’s great, but populists show you only one side of the coin and what is on another doesn’t looks like dramatically better than existing situation. I would fully support clear plan how to deal with constant battery replacement and recycling, but so far just hearing that somebody will do something when we face it. Good luck.

The problem I have about global change. Is that weather changes all the time. It’s the nature of nature. The leaders are trying to get you to believe about global change. The fact of the matter is that the atmosphere is a fraction of 1%. If America does great on emissions and all the other countries do really bad that is safe in America because we’ve done so good. If the atmosphere above us is bad over one area it affects the whole planet and America will be bad like Asia or India. Another thought is that there have been 5 extinctions and they happened even with no emissions from us. Solar flares are the biggest global threats. Also you can fact check this info. Our Government is not exactly being honest about global change time. They are only giving us this certain time to go on about global change. How about all of the other day and ages that were too cold to live, too hot to live. We will have another extinction it’s just when. Nothing we can do to change that except for a type of war that could wipe out its civilization. Oh Year that’s right like your President Biden said, New World Order has already stated. This administration is evil. It is what it is. They are suppose to keep us safe. They clearly are not doing a good job.

Firstly, power production must be ecological. If electricity is still produced in coal/oil based power plants, it will not be eco at all - see Germany. Secondly, most of the infrastructure must be upgraded to even send so much power needed to charge all the electrical vehicles. Right now infrastructure is still old and malfunctioning in many countries. And finally, biggest change must happen in China, USA and India, that produce together over 50% of entire CO2 emission in the world.

You are right, though I think it does gain some efficiency (which would mean less fossil fuels for the same amount of power) when the fuel is burnt and power is generated in centralized plants instead of car engines (although some would be lost in power lines, and idk if combustion or EVs use their power better). Used car batteries eventually will end up in a land fills/oceans. Electric vehicles are like my mobile phone. It doesn't emit CO2, but when we're charging 7 Billion of our mobiles every night, there's a coal/diesel plant burning somewhere to charge it. Electric cars aren’t any cleaner than fossil fuel powered cars. Just because they say its 0 emission, behind the scene they burn 12 to 13 times more fossil fuel to just get the lithium-ion batteries. It is already 13 times more harmful for the environment. The cobalt is found under water and the machines that are used to get the cobalt for the batteries are using thousands of litres of fossil fuel to produce a single car with un-reusable batteries that cannot be recycled because of chemicals inside of it. You already can see that people with older Teslas are selling them because Tesla charges you 20k to 25k for a new battery and its not really worth it for something like a Tesla model 3 that the battery is roughly the same price as the car, so the owner sees no point at changing that battery. Even if we replace petrol or diesel powered engines, the batteries become even a bigger problem since they are not even recycle-able with all of those chemicals that are not possible to separate. Second problem comes in when we want to replace the petrol powered cars. There are more than billion cars on the road now. Even by 2035 there is no way that all of these cars can be recycled and re used for electric cars of the future. We are talking 1 billion automobiles excluding bikes that each weigh over a ton of metal and plastic and copper. The system of these cars is out of hand. Some companies are rejecting this standard like Ferrari or Lamborghini. The emission of todays supercars are so close to 0 that it doesn’t make any sense to purchase an electric car. In my opinion rather cheaper cars like VW group cars or Toyota’s automobile industry should go electric that will be more budget friendly for the mass market. Something like bmw M or AMG has such a low volume of sales that it isn’t even worth spending money to make the soulless and electric. companies like Bugatti, Porsche or Pagani altogether sell 1/5 of what Toyota RAV4 sells in just North America. It is an absolute waste of time and thought to make these masterpieces electric. Third of all, electricity comes at a cost. The money that government spends on a single wind turbine is absolutely insane! And lastly, it is absolutely impossible to make Asia go electric. People in Asia, specifically Middle East is already struggling with finding their own daily electricity to just turn on the lamp and you expect them to buy a 33k dollar Tesla that is already 13times more harmful than what they have in the parking. Just imagine trying to replace only the taxis in India or china! Good luck tho…

@@kylenolan2710 I don’t see that in car community these days. I’m a proud fan of petrol powered cars and it isn’t this easy to replace all of these vehicles just under 15 years. A billion dollars is a bold amount of money to spend on such a project. if you claim that producing Lithium-ion batteries aren’t any harmful, then how some companies like Tesla or Lucid are still using coal mines and fossil fuel powered sources to make these batteries. If this is what you call eco friendly I don’t know what else you call ecological? Last of all, you might be right about China since they are selling pretty well there. But how about India, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the whole Africa, somewhere like Kazakhstan or Azerbaijan is the struggle with electric car sales. These people can’t even keep their country clean, and you want them to buy an electric car. My point here is, that for this transformation you need 50+ years for companies like TATA or Mahindra that are have the sales of the mass market for budget vehicles to think of an affordable option for people. Managing this market is way harder than you think. Japan and China or Korea are already ahead of the game but the rest of Asia is struggling really bad…

Magnificent person reading this… The truth is you are confident and good enough already with who you are, where you are at and what you have right now to have the success you want in life. Don't let others define what “success” is for you. Get up, learn that skill and go after it! I believe in you so much! Have an awesome day! 🌟- Love, Nat ❤️

So many people do not understand that electricity comes from dams coal and oil. No making electric vehicles do you need batteries people do not understand the distraction it takes place in the environment to dig up the order for the batteries in the pollution that China will make and making these batteries for the United States of America because we do not make them here. Please pray for wisdom not just change. Green energy through electricity still takes old fashion means to create electricity. Did you people know that the windmills we are making are all made in China. I wish people would do the research and understand when they’re talking about all these new things but it’s not going to be instant clean. We need to invent new ways of making electricity that is actually healthy for the environment nothing we are doing at the moment is really healthy for the environment people are spending so much money to lie to the public. Because it’s political not practical.

My friend electricity is generated through different ways: solar(through the sun's energy),hydro i.e water ( through dams, wind mills(through wind)... These r not harmful to the environment ..please don't give out the wrong advise. The electricty u r talking about is through a generator which u use at home that uses oil (like petrol,diesel)

The big picture is that they have smaller overall carbon footprint. It's not that they are good for the environment it's that they are less detrimental.
@tomrendi7435

@@jeffk464 They do not in all cases. I work in life cycle assessment so I can safely assure you: the environmental excellence of electric cars is dependent on their energy source. I've seen publications showing a 1/10 increase in carbon footprint over cars utilising combustion engines (when energy comes from coal etc.; an example would be Germany). If you are searching for something to advocate for: public transport is the answer to our problems. I honestly don't know how these presenters can mention cities and completely ignore this huge potential for improvement. Most LCAs even show that a really old car outperforms a factory new "environmentally conscious" vehicle. Simply because of the production phase.

You haven't done anything to fix ALL the problems and pollution from your electric cars! Take all the gasoline emissions out and start polluting the soil and ground water with heavy metals and toxic chemicals! Use even more petroleum in order to make the plastic electric cars. Vehicles that can't cross a State in a day - food and product shortages! Higher prices! Before you start trying to force everyone to drive awful vehicles, FIX THEIR PROBLEMS!
