Gavin McCormick: Tracking the whole world's carbon emissions -- with satellites & AI | TED Countdown

What we know today about global greenhouse gas emissions is mostly self-reported by countries, and those numbers (sometimes tallied manually on paper!) are often inaccurate and prone to manipulation. If we really want to get serious about fighting climate change, we need a way to track carbon pollution in real-time and identify the worst culprits, says high-tech environmental activist Gavin McCormick. Enter Climate TRACE: a coalition of scientists, activists and tech companies using satellite imagery, big data and AI to monitor and transparently report on all of the world's emissions as they happen -- and speed up meaningful climate action. A powerful, free, global tool to match the scale of a civilization-threatening crisis.
Countdown is TED's global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at countdown.ted.com/sign-up

The other interesting side of this is being able to monitor areas that we didn’t think were polluting before. An example might be an oil well that we capped and moved on from, but then it started leaking later. This could help our alarm bells go off so that we go fix it before it creates too much of an issue. Sure it might sound silly no when most of our emissions is coming from stuff that we’re actively doing, but eventually that won’t be the case.
@Buildings1772
@Buildings1772 2 года назад
we dont ask polluters about their emissions we know how much CO2 per tonn of fuel is released. and we know how much coal oil gass ect is sold each year. we can quite easily extrapolate from that
@robobrain10000
@robobrain10000 2 года назад
You get a list of who is selling, but you won't know who is buying all that for commercial purposes. With that level of detail, you can regulate better.

@@robobrain10000 there is a fixed amount of CO2 released per unit of fuel. it is reasonable to assume that all fuel bought in a year is also burnt (the real number will be so close as to not be worth adjusting for) there for you know CO2 emissions

I've been on the solar industry 15 years and most still don't recognise the importance of showing people their power consumption profile and give them real time monitoring so they can work out how best to use their power during the day! So this is brilliant, but long over due.... Now the next big question is to ask, why does the economy NEED to grow? Because that's why we burn fossil fuels

This is AMAZING. I'm really excited about computer vision for environmental evalation. One small detail that caught me off guard was that there "are software engineers volunteering their time nights and weekends." For something this important, I'm surprised it's still just running on volunteers with no permanent staff, usually high tech projects like this are able to attract grant funding. I'm a little over the idea of highly skilled people not getting paid to do important environmental work like this, even from NGOs. People volunteering on this project must be incredibly passionate, I hope they have day jobs.

Does that make any sense in comparison to ESA's Tropomi, GeoCarb, GHGSat or Copernicus? It's nice to have a machine learning solution that find a powerplant and scores it based on chimney vapor plume. But if 86 times more potent (colourless) methane is escaping from abandon wells at breakneck pace somewhere, something crucial is missing. It's always good to have a consolidated database, that's for sure. P.S.: I'm in awe that we don't already have a space and ground segment to basically do accounting and just publish precise values for every country. After that, we can think how we should adjust custom systems accordingly, so that goods from countries that would try to avoid investments into green tech would be appropriately priced, including these externalities. That would be only fair to those who are willing to go green. There's a huge fear of investing into green, because then you have to compete with countries that didn't and are thus cheaper.

I suspect many were surprised that, by and large, the "nasty" big corporate polluters were reporting their emissions responsibly and accurately. That should help reassure people that there are many good, honest people working in the corporate sector. They have to be a big part of the solution.

Surely it would be easier to track oil, gas and coal sales. Are they not the source or the emissions? Perhaps with the exception of wood fires as long as the wood is from a sustained forest? Am I missing something here?
@SaveMoneySavethePlanet
@SaveMoneySavethePlanet 2 года назад
There’s issues with unreported things such as methane leaks from wells which we though we’re capped properly. Your suggestions is what we need for 80% of emissions, but we’ll eventually need something like this.
@floppydonkeyste
@floppydonkeyste 2 года назад
@@SaveMoneySavethePlanet I suppose, but it seems they were focussing on things like electricity production and car emissions which is all burning fossil fuels. Seems like they have wasted their time? I mean I know exactly how much of a carbon footprint I leave when I drive my car and heat my house. And factories know how much they are as well. They just need to look at their energy bills. So it looks like the only thing this is good for is leaks from the fossil fuel business? And maybe cows emitting methane? Just seems like a wasted effort in the wrong place which is why I want to know what I'm missing here?

@debabratabanerjee7461
@debabratabanerjee7461 2 года назад
Excellent producer generated emission tracker. No one can hide. Now goods & services are produced for consumption. So the next job is to quantitively track these goods & services to who is consuming these? Then we can assign the respective quantities of emission to those consumers. Then we can correctly identify the entities responsible for the emission. Then take socio-political action to reduce consumption at the appropriate demand points instead of just ask India or China to reduce emission. Emissions to produce steel in China for USA should be assigned to USA's account. Emission to produce BMWs in Germany for China should be assigned to China. Well, such equitable assessment of emission will take time & may be too late, and the mother mature may not wait. Better to pray for Lake Toba to help us once again so that we can start all over again.

Unfortunately I can't see how simply identifying these super polluters will enable any expedient and effective control, especially in countries like China, India, Russia, and a great many more.. Fortunately there ARE concrete actions we CAN and should begin to seriously consider.. Ideas that have the potential to eventually give us a sort of thermostatic control over the Earth's atmospheric temperatures..All forms of affirmative action LIKE those presented here, are of continuing importantance though..Peace.
