THAT part. Asia, South America, parts of Africa, the Caribbean. People who are darker skinned are seen as dirty and ugly. I’m watching this show and not denying these women their attractiveness but watching the men flock to them ONLY because they’re pale and pretty and only focusing on that and nothing else is…frustrating. You bond with the tan one but she’s not pale enough so you choose the whiter one. Come on. Everyone hates to act like there are issues in their community especially the black community and it’s ridiculous. I see so many Asian people of all shades and Caribbeans calling out colorism but black people cant do it
Since learning about colorism, I've wondered if darker skinned Italian people have ever faced anything like that. If racism was created by white people, it makes sense that colorism would have a similar origin.
To Megan’s point, it’s just like a white person saying they don’t have white privilege because they’re poor. Colorism doesn’t negate the fact that light skinned people will go through problems. Colorism means that light skinned people will have systemic and societal perks and benefits because they’re closer to looking like the majority (white people) unlike dark skinned people.
I feel like being light skinned may make it easier for you to be a slutty rapper or slutty it girl but darker skinned women are taken more seriously in corporate culture they are seen as a professional they are seen more in those industries they don’t get seen as the chippy in the room
There isn’t gonna be anymore full bread black people in the next 50 years. Because there barely isn’t any full bread black couples, which means no full bread black children. Society is tryna erase the full bread black population and they are winning. Take away the ability to have more full black people and there will be most likely extinct (in America that is)
Well I am light skinned and I wanted to choose someone that was not black latino or white... I married an Indian man and made beautiful babies... who ironically look like me or look latino...Oh the irony...Yes, I did it on purpose. Still love their daddy and appreciate all the things he has taught me.
extremely light skin biracial girl here, the fact monaleo was so forgiving and understanding of the bullshit megan was saying is just another example of colorism. dark skinned girls have to be well spoken and kind or they’re labeled the “angry black girl”. So many of these light skinned female rappers talk so much shit in their music (which is fine) but when dark skinned female rappers do it the reaction is different. megan just seemed lowkey confrontational with the way she spoke but if monaleo were to do the same reactions would be so much different.
Exactly, Meghan cussed, cut her off, asked her deep questions and when Leo answered, Meghan just went to another question, with no regard for her answer. It didn't feel like she was a guest or she wanted to understand..
The way the fair skinned lady is trying to play down colorism is equivalent to white ppl saying that racism and discrimination does not exist and that we are trying to victimize ourselves.
It doesn’t exist when you empower yourself and build communities where you can give yourselves opportunities instead of asking other people for them. Other communities will prioritize themselves in their businesses and communities so we should do the same.
No. Seriously. I just wrote a comment similar to yours. Speaking on real topics, staring up real controversy… creates a bigger divide in the community… especially around no real conversation that we need. Colorism effects both ends. If the conversation was more fluent with both stories. We would understand the effects. This shit legit be happening: I’ll be right by a dark skin, she can be the most beautiful, baddest body in the world. Yet, they would come to my corner, fetish over me because of my skin color. It rubs me wrong. I don’t like it and it keeps fucking happening. Self-hate is real within people in our community. The saying goes ‘ you don’t like me, you like what I have to offer ‘ just like the Chef dude who said all that shit on Twitter about black women.
She’s just talking about her experiment as a black woman. For them to say you talk white means they see her as black and the way she talks isn’t stereotypical to a black woman.
@@jennifercooljeo6552 you missed the point of my comment and the video. It’s not the same thing. Being bullied for “acting white” and facing actual discrimination in society and institutionally because you’re of a darker are two different issues.
kodak black security guard reaction when he is being a colorist is hilarious; he's like is this fool serious. Also colorism for some weird reason is such a sensitive topic in the black community if you bring it up they immediately shut you down
I looked at him the same way when I heard that ignorant shit. Also I think colorism is immediately shut down because many men and women actively participate in it.
We have this weird cult in the black community so deeply that when it comes to any problems in it such as colorisms, abuse or sexual assault some weird ass group of people will shut you up and say we making black people look bad in front of white people
I think Megan is confusing jealousy & bullying for reverse colorism. Megan hasnt been denied anything because she's lighter, in fact she's probably been awarded/afforded more and better things because of it 🤷🏾♀. Its the whole house negro vs. field negro thing.
The Rick Ross scene kinda makes me want to cry because I can tell that the darker skinned girl was nervous. The look on her face when Rick Ross said the other girl was better reminded me of myself. The light skinned girl was more confident, and honestly, lighter skinned girls receive more positive affirmation because of their light skin, which helps them build their confidence. Light skinned girls get more sympathy, more recognition for their accomplishments. Dark skinned girls are often overlooked or ignored. So even though the dark skinned girl was more talented, and just as beautiful beautiful if not more, she probably did not grow up in an environment that helped her build her confidence and even now, she’s still being overlooked because of her skin color. Also, notice the darker skinned girl was thinner. F*** the Black community for real
That Rick Ross scene was just sad. The first one sounded weak, off-key and amateurish. The second one was clearly gifted. She precisely hit notes and was punished because the was darker-skinned and not dressed a$$-out. I don’t support artists who show colorism. Giving money/support to someone who tries tell me I’m less than … Should I donate to the kkk next?
I swear as a man talking to other black men about colorism is one of the most infuriating things to do. Luckily I had to point out when's the last time they saw a dark skin mainstream artist with staying power and they couldn't answer. They finally got it. But it was annoying trying to prove my points.
If we are talking Beyoncé type power. Then yeah. Your right and they won’t go ‘mainstream’ if they do it’s a ‘ Megan Thee Stallion, City Girl aesthetic level ‘
Colorism mostly affects women, like sexual assault, it is very easy for men to downplay as they are the main reason it happens, and mainly are doing it to others. They usually get mostly upset when it’s their loved ones facing it though.
@@jamilljones2264 It IS about color, bozo. Hollywood is White-dominated, so after Whiteness, they want minorities as close to Whiteness as possible, which means lightskin Black people, lightskins Asians, lightskin Hispanics. You barely see an A List, respected tanned/brown Hispanic celeb, an A List, respected brown Asian celeb, an A List, respected darkskin Black woman celeb anymore. Almost all of the top notch, A List, respected Hispanic celebs are as light as Shakira. Almost all of the top notch, A List, respected Asian celebs are as snow-pale as BTS. Almost all of the top notch, A List, respected Black woman celebs are as bright as Beyonce/Rihanna/Nicki. For Black women, the girls that look like Monaleo, Kashdoll, Foxy Brown, etc, barely make it past being a B List artist, but you've got ratchet, talentless, classless lightskins, like Cardi, Ice Spice and Dreamdoll, making it to A List in no time.
I was darker as a kid than I am now. And yes you are treated differently even if you’re a child. I got picked on by grown adult men for my looks and got comments from some family too. Not these days, but the attention doesn’t phase me cuz Ik how ppl would probably treat me differently if I was just a few shades darker.
This is an example of how colourism effects us more internally rather than externally. It’s our bias being projected onto ourselves. What Meghan was talking about was how she was treated as a black woman not really being about her being lightskin
Y’all know he said he chose the orange wig girl because he wanted to smash. That’s all it is with them. They care about who is bad and fuckable. NOT real talent
I hate how colorism is never taken seriously in the black community cause it specifically targets dark skinned black women 🙄 the whole “our we all black we all face racism” that still doesn’t mean it don’t exist.
I went to middle school with a girl who was dark skinned. A lot of other black kids called her a monkey and made fun of her all the time..shit was really fucked up.
I Wonder why lighskins ask us about colorism like tbh I feel like nobody really wants to talk colorism so it’s an odd question but to just over talk her and make it about yourself like Megan is known to make a lot about herself it’s like what’s the point hun
This would have been a nice conversation. I can give you a great example of why colorism draws the effects it has on both sides. I was at the gym, and there was a beautiful black women, her shape was amazing. The guys never once looked at her, even tho she was doing squats. You know how men are… Instead they come over to my section..and start fetishing over me. This has happened multiple times, any where I go for black men. It’s creepy as hell and freaks me tf out. When Megan explained the hate she got because of people being colorist to others and they are deflecting onto you. It should have stopped there. The reason why. There is no such thing as reverse colorism. Only hate vs hate….which creates prejudice/racism. When uneducated people talk about a topic that’s very serious and they have the Internet going off on each other. This is when you know that people need to stop listening to everybody because now there’s even more of the a great divide when everybody is going through something because it has been embedded in us.
Colorism is similar to racism or any ism for that matter so it shouldn’t be this hard for them to grasp. You can’t make people get something they don’t want to get.
Very true. Men who are lighter skinned are often feminized or soft & women who are darker are "tough" or smh "too gutter" making them seem masculine. That's direct plantation mentality. As a teacher I used to have the sweetest demour little dark-skinned girls who would get teased relentlessly, while light skinned boys would be picked on as weak.
Megan was bullied that's it, lightly at that because the shit i went through as a black girl in a predominantly privileged white school doesn't even touch "not being allowed to sit with them" or "not being black enough". Feels intentionally ignorant.
Remembered when megan said on national t.v. to andrea...a black woman she looked gehtto and "black." All because she thought andrea was prettier. Again y'all listen to megan?
"Why is Normani still a breakout star years after she broke out in the industry? Why [isn't Jazmine Sullivan getting her flowers considering how talented she is and all the excellent work she's done]?" YES. I ask myself these questions every single time I hear them on a track. Every. Single. Time. I was a major Fifth Harmony fan and I adored all the girls, but lets be honest- Normani and Lauren Jauregui had the most star potential considering their voices, looks, and backgrounds. The fact that Camilla left first definitely helped her rise- but her voice? People used to shit on her voice so much! I would verbally elbow haters back into their corners on youtube and Tumblr back when Fifth Harmony was on X Factor and shortly after bc so many people genuinely disliked Camillas voice. When I saw how quickly she was rising I was happy for her but also surprised as hell. Having latin fans definitely boosts the heck out of an artist's platform, but not like that. I adored Camilla Cabello but HER rise (out of every other FH member and especially Normani, Lauren, and Dinah (who def faced colorism herself) had me side-eyeing 👀. I could go farther into what happened with that group, but Im gonna stop here and say- the industry did those talented young women dirty. They ALL deserved to be recognized for their talent.
Thank you for looking at the other side of things and mentioning how colorism affects men as well. I’m a darkskin male and I grew up seeing people hate on darkskin boys and call them derogatory names. Can you make a separate video going more in depth on the effects colorism has on darkskin men and what they experience in their youth? As a 20 year old I would really love to see that.
While DSBM do indeed experience colorism, in the blk community it benefits you. DS is associated with masculinity which is great…if you’re a male. For a female, not so much. This fact aids in the masculinization and dehumanization of DSBW. We’re constantly associated with “strength” and “labor”. Outside of that, we’re seen as sex objects in the bc, but never wives or damsels in distress. Which is why when something bad happens to us (DV/Femicide), ppl make a joke out of it or are less empathetic (I.E., Megan Thee Stallion). Also, I think that if you want an in-depth video about colorism and how it affects dsbm, you should request a dsbm to do it. Actually, a good content creator to check out would be F.D. Signifier. He has a video on colorism and how it affects the black male. Check it out 🧡
And if you dark skin men have a problem with colorism dont expect dark skin woman to do the work for you and make a video about it . Take that up with the dark skin men community to deal with colorism
As a light skinned person who is also afro Latina I've never experienced colorism ever. I've never experienced or witnessed the "you're not black enough" stuff. No one ever says "you're too Latina to be black", it's always you're too "black to be Latina." I've never understood why light skinned women play the victim like this. Edit: Now I would like to add that I'm emo too I'm not very curvy so I don't fit the idea of what a black woman should be. Yes I've gotten the Oreo and white washed comments. I've never been bullied for being light skinned.
i’m lightskin AA and THIS. i have never not once been denied something of made fun of for my COLOR!!! anything i have experienced that is discriminatory has been based on the fact that iam BLACK. people keep conflating colorism to racism and it’s just not….. that. if anything colorism is probably more harmful to the mental state
As a lighter skin black woman, I've always had darker skin black girls say I'm not black because of my complexion. I've been called albino, the white sheep of my family or if I was adopted/hospital mistake made after delivery. I always had to prove my blackness and the fact that I use perfect English grammar, never made things easier. If I hung out w/my white friends, I just kinda stuck out completely. I may of had the complexion, but far from the Caucasian features.
@@selenaquiles1 this was my same experience. I’ve always been told I talk too proper, I’m too light to just be black, etc etc. but I do feel like it’s a difference between that and colorism itself.
@@Yearn4yana you’re so right! As a darker skinned person I was also called “Oreo” and “white washed” simply because the way I dressed and spoke. It’s definitely different from colorism.
It boils down to the men in the higher positions of the music industry. Just like the last clip showed. They like the way the lightskin girl looks and want to promote her more. Want to invest in her more.
This conversation tho!!!!! I went to high school with Amala aka Doja cat and she literally identified as “white” and vehemently denied her black side in high school. It was delusional. She would get angry and say “I’m white!” And I would just respect her choice but not encourage it. I told her how she was so beautiful but still she loathes her black side. It was only after I pointed out how she had an advantage to fit in and be accepted by the “cool black kids” and the “nerdy white kids” just the same, (just as a reminder of how she could bring the two together and not be ashamed and how being white is not better than being black and how she’s missing out on life by denying her true self) for her to not even appreciate her beauty or see how she represents girls like her, but I think she only started embracing it for the clout because it was a trend to be “light skin” so she is really insecure and ashamed and THAT is the real shame. SMH BLACK GIRLS ARE BEAUTIFUL DONT YOU DARE BE ASHAMED OF BEING BLACK OR TRY TO BE WHITE THINKING ITS BETTER. Don’t you dare be so damn ignorant. Be strong.
honestly i believe this but i don’t think she embraced being light skin for clout. i think being around white people can really brainwash you into believing white is better than black when that’s not the case. wow that’s so sad
@@donttalktomeyoureannoying8736 yo! You are SO Right! I literally just put two and two together the other day! I told my bf the same thing! That’s why she shaved her head. She would rather be bald than be her beautiful black self because she hates black girls and being black. Like it’s so pathetic. She has such a huge platform she could be such an inspiration but she is ungrateful
So Rick Ross really said no to that dark skinned girl, yet her voice was on point and she had more vocal range and control in comparison to that other girl before her👀 talking about taking L's just to maintain a look
I’m a dark skin girl with a African name but from Mississippi and I have gotten bullied and talked about and at one point I wanted to be white I told my mom I got a whopping and a history lecture from my mom and dad that’s when my dad wasn’t living with us at the time but I learned to live with my dark skin and my African name my name is Kenya but I love my self
“The black community is excepting to everyone” so incorrect and false👎🏿 I’m Caribbean and I have been bullied by mainly black ppl by saying “ur not black bc ur family isn’t from here” “Caribbean booty scratcher” “whitewashed” and so much more. And I’m not even saying this from a Caribbean standpoint. Many black ppl bully other black ppl just bc “they aren’t black enough” and so much more🤦🏿
I think she's saying that BP love including others in our spaces. I do agree with you regarding the ignorance and bullying we face being Afro-Caribbean.
Also, “Latto” just makes me uncomfortable. Like why are we ignoring the fact that her name is short for “Mulatto” which means back and white person from a white dad and black mom. If you go back to slavery, that’s from the result of slave owners raping the black slave women and the babies being un accepted for not having a “place to fit in in society” so they were unwanted. Now fast forward, miss mulatto, when I first heard that, I thought how ignorant she sounds just from her name alone. Like it’s not like she’s proud of being black and white, no, she’s proud of the “light skin” side. That’s like you choosing to call yourself “redbone” or “yellowbone” not referring to “redbone native Americans” , no, redbone being the better complexion in comparison to darker skin. Like……. RACISM. and that’s cute?! No I’m sorry. 😞💔
The Rick Ross clip will always make me mad. Brit did NOT sing the song better and everybody in the room knew that, even Rick Ross. He has even admitted that the reason he signs some of his female artists is because he's attracted to them, not because of any actual talent.
it’s the way Monaleo and myself were confused at the way sis was tryna act like colorism never existed 😂. It was literally no point for her to downplay Monaleo’s experiences… just to make herself feel better. I wish people were actually mature and not closed minded.
I believe in colorism I always felt like light skinned people could never see where darker skinned people are coming from because they just aren’t in that position to care they benefit from it but lastly I remember being compared to lightskinned women & people constantly telling me I’m prettier because I’m black & that’s been “playing out in my favor” so I think it’s pretty interesting how people’/s perspective of color changes over time because this is more like modern days I do remember however when I was younger light skinned girls would always get played out like they were better but once the tables switch they will get a taste of their own medicine it’s sad that it’s always light skin vs dark skins
At the end of the day I'm glad Megan said what she said and listened. Conversations are what's gonna push for change. We got to stop normalizing shaming people who are open to listening when someone presents facts. Let's keep talking and educating one another❤️
And I wish people understand saying “ You’re cute to be dark skin” is soooooo disrespectful to us‼️ So u tell me 95 percent of us darker women are ugly??!! And 100 percent of the light skin women are ALL beautiful!!!! Shut the front door ‼️‼️‼️
Exactly, I agree! When I hear that s*** I get extremely annoyed because it’s like b**ch it doesn’t matter what shade that person is, he and/or she are beautiful regardless.
@@miajmosley yeah. I think that was it. You know those “they’re invited to the cookout” videos and stuff. In that sense we are. But in our OWN community. Nah
Rick Ross was drooling over that little girl. I remember when he took her shopping and told her “we” have a spot for u shawd… u got it. Meaning lighter skin 😂
That Kaia vs Britney thing has me with a crazy look on my face right now! In the old days, only eunuchs could tend the king's concubines, I think we need to decree that only blind people can work in music recruitment.
As what would be a "light skinned" black dude there's expectations of all colors. Darker people are expected to be mean and light skins are treated as soft. This is why often times the reality is switched, the darker-skinned people are nice and want to be left alone. While the light-skinned are trying to start a fight just so nobody will call them a punk. Colorism affects all because of whom control the social dynamic in the area. I've seen it and dealt with it.
The quality on this video is insane. Can't believe this channel wasn't recommended to me until now. Gotta go and binge every single thing on the backlog
This video is a great debunk on colorism. I'm from Senegal,Africa and i can say that colorism is still widely present in our society, light skinned women are much more desirable than dark skinned women in here and DSW "become desirable" when they fit the senegalese beauty standards. But even a LSW who doesn't fit the standards gets a pass well because she's LS. Fortunately how i see things, my generation seems to embrace more and more the darker skintones of my sisters (and brothers) !!
Wow another great video, I am definitely subscribing now. You put out nothing but actual thought provoking conversation, and thats what youtube needs more of, instead of all of this speculation (alleged) and rumor content.
So I experienced in my own family my grandma is from the south and I went to visit my dad as a 6 year old I’ll never forget her telling my mom I was gone come back fat and black and when I came back you could just tell she was kinda disgusted
I can’t imagine how frustrating it was to explain to Megan that she isn’t a victim of colorism and then for her to sit there with the whole “you’re too pretty” blah blah like girl
What’s so funny is how they don’t realize the mindset to say you’re too pretty to be JUST black stems from the beliefs that they themselves don’t like their skin color or take into account all the negative cog notations that are associated with black skin or Black Women in general.. This is why the community needs to change our specific value’s within our culture and let the rest fall 💕!
BINGO! That comment always creeps me out. Def not taken as complimentary! I feel bad for the person if they are darker than me & complementing me on my color
I’m brown skinned and kids said and did the exact same things to me. (My family is British so I speak properly and have an accent sometimes) It has nothing to do with her skin, but clearly someone told her that or made her feel that when growing up.. When I was made fun of as a kid, my dad would tell me “it’s cos your pretty”, and I’m sure that Megan was told the same “it’s cos you’re pretty and you have this kinda hair and your skin is this color”. And I really wish she would actually do research before speaking with literally NO knowledge, no education, no classes taken. Cos she sounds ignorant as hell.
Is really sad to hear and see black people that don’t love their skin. Keep having these conversations because our people need to wake up. Kodak is so ignorant. People fall victim to what they see in entertainment and don’t know how to educate themselves. That last clip. Like seriously Rick Ross 😂
If u want to sum up the perfect example of colorism, especially in the music industry, all u have to do is state one person. Michael Jackson. The most popular person on planet earth literally at a time but still became consumed with white skin and features. Not everyone will bend to the will of colorism but it definitely exists and it's very prevalent in the music industry or any field that generates alot of income.
Damn she’s freaking gorgeous dude . I used to be called white and stuff like that so I get what she is saying but I actually live in a very small town where I was one of the few POC and only at my highschool and I’ve al and relayed more to my black side because I experience and relate wayyyy more. Interracial relationships are even still taboo here . The few times I went to church they talked about how interracial relationships are not holy and I’m literally sitting in the front row on Easter .. but I feel safe around black women so I have seen colorism first hand and it’s usually very microagressive. Black men don’t ever like me but it’s probably because I’m gay
Megan look SEVERAL shades LIGHTER than she looked on BGC, SOOOOO it seems to me like that outta tell us something that she understands CLEARLY that when you are LIGHTER within the industry, ESPECIALLY as a WOMAN, that can get you into certain spaces and have certain privileges versus darker skinned women in the industry. And I disagree that it’s just women cause even when it comes to male superstars name one mainstream dark skinned male that is at the top, top of the music industry
Same thing for Nicki Minaj bt y’all let her get away with everything like she so great she BEEN bleaching Nicki Minaj is BROWN she not ice spice or glorilla color she was never lightskin bt y’all allow her to consider herself light skin it’s like y’all wanna choose who y’all consider light skin like it’s a compliment or something it’s weird when meagn good is the same complexion as Nicki and Ciara is the same complexion as Nicki bt y’all never call them lightskin and y’all got on meagn for bleaching bt let Nicki bleach In peace n gave her the title that SHE is lightskin when she not she jus bleached bt she looks like a regular blk girl she not mixed or mixed looking at all Nicki isn’t
Light skin privilege is real, it just don't get you much as my cousins think it does, at least in my experience as a man Edit: when people ask what I am I always say black for two reasons 1. we in public and I'm not gonna break down my life story for you cause you feel like it( however I will readily tell you bout my lily white daddy proudly ) 2. I have a pharse "to where it amounts, I'm black when it counts". Because in America that's what it is. The most I ever hear about my lack of blackness is from other black folks( which I understand why) I just think they'd be disappointed to know how little of a difference it makes.
I think celebrities like Kodak Black and ASAP Rocky are very attractive but at the end of the day if they were to see me in person they would be disgusted by two things 1. At the fact that im trans or 2. I'm a darkskin girl
I can tell you as honest as the day is long.. ASAP is nice. I’m a DSBW, not society’s view of attractive (more masculine presenting) and he was very nice to me. But then again he knew my friend and I was introduced so maybe that’s why. Either way.. maybe Kodak would do that but in my honest experience I don’t think ASAP is like that
Ice spice and I have similar features like nose lips and eyes BUT I’m seen as black because of my skin complexion and 4a hair. I think she does has black features but is desired because of the skin tone and hair texture for sure and the body shape. Glorillahas full on African features so we all know many people hate that smh but she got an advantage cuz she has green eyes and light complexion cuz we all know if she was my tone and has brown eyes it’s game over smh it’s really sad
I have a sensitive spot for baby Kodak because you can just see the little boy who was picked on for being dark skin just being stabbed constantly by his older self even though he’s talking about women he’s actually talking down on himself
Lol I see a the guy who goes onto hate on darkskin girls and project their hatred for themselves onto innocent people subjecting them to colorist and misogynoir he ain't a victim he's just a ugly self hating prat
This made me like her even more because she sat there and she used choice of words and I feel like whenever someone speaks before they talk are very intelligent.
No the rapper thing. Black rappers will say want a redbone yellowbone no blackies….but look at they kids??? MONORACIAL DARKSKIN BLACK. I like lil Wayne’s music (I guess because my mom loved him I swear his music was the first thing I’ve heard) but his obsession with redbone meanwhile he has a darkskin bm and a darkskin daughter rubs me the wrong way. You don’t have to like your bm I guess but putting all this out not realizing how it could affect your children and then getting mad when men treat your kids how you treat their parents 😑
I would say that people always asking people if they're mixed, and either overtly or subversively stating that if they are, that is why theyre attractive, is colorist, because if a darker black person were to observe that, they would feel the othering and the insult. Though it is more directly fetishization.
