Disney spent the last 40 years ignoring this movie. About time they recognized it's popularity. It's not Star Wars, more like Forbidden Planet meets 20,000 Leagues.

Yes, that was the whole problem. Everyone Including the critics wanted a cookie cutter Star Wars or Star Trek type narrative. To me this was so much better because it was nothing like either one of those movies. No doubt, it was much much darker, and quite frankly had the potential to be absolutely terrifying had they wisely taken it in that direction, which they didn’t sadly.

This film leaned more to the Star Trek than the Star Wars, and it's all the better for it. I like that, for a Disney flick, it didn't pull its punches when mirrored masks came off or those thrumming, spinning blades of Maximilian's shredded Anthony Perkins's book (and insides).

It really is in many ways. John Barry's haunting score in many scenes, the death of Durant, and just an overall bleakness feel to the whole thing give off major horror vibes. Only thing that really distracts from that is whenever Vincent and Old Bob are on screen and that's where it gets goofy. I love the robots but they definitely scream ripoff of 3PO and R2-D2 in many ways.

I was six in 1979 when Star Wars was rereleased and The Black Hole premiered. I fell asleep in the middle of Star Wars. I had my dad take me to see The Black Hole five times. Everything about that movie captured my imagination and to this day it remains an all time favorite of mine.

I loved this move as a kid, and I’ve been praying for years that somebody remakes this epic movie. The effects in it were top notch. A great story, a little creepy, perfect for a 9 year old in the day.

I still love this flick. It IS like space horror, more than straight sci-fi! I wake up every morning with figures of Vital Information Necessary CENTralized, Old BiO Battalion, and Maximillian staring right at me. Tron is there, too.

Enjoyed watching (for the first time) this obscure Disney gem whilst housebound recently. Great special effects and a Disney trademark of having memorable characters with cute little robots (reminds me of WALL-E) and a death which gutted me. To top it all off, you've got Mademoiselle Mimieux sporting a perm

All I remember from seeing it as a kid (at probably age 5 or 6) was them all being stretched like spaghetti as they go in to it :) Cant wait to see it again! Just put it on my watchlist! I rewatched interstellar last night, and asked my hubby "are they going to be stretched like in "the black hole" " - he had no idea what I was talking about...he will soon tho :)

really wish that disney will eventually put out a quality behind the scenes look at this movie. there's been a few DVDs, etc. but the content has been disappointing compared to other films that offer a large amount of stuff. also, not many of the actors are left so it would be great to have some in depth interviews with those that worked on this film. i know there's deleted footage too as well as scenes that were photographed but never made it into the movie.

@@kiirabrightstar7452 I would love to see the sequence where Holland was trying to go across a catwalk and it collapsed. There are stills of that sequence in the storybook and there's also a continuity error where right before they go into the room for that scene he doesn't have cuts on his face but the next scene after that sequence was cut you can see cuts on Robert Forsters face all of sudden that he got from that catwalk fall.

I remember before the movie released there was a cool Black Hole exhibit at the Crown Center shopping center in Kansas City. It included a mockup of the VINCENT robot. After seeing the film I must have spent days drawing battles between robots and our heroes. The unmasking scene gave me a good scare as a kid lol.

I'm holding out for a remake in the true horror vein, similar to Event Horizon but on the scale of Sunshine - no compromise, no cute robots, just claustrophobia, peril, and a massive and detailed COLD Cygnus. Big bombastic score is also a must

As a teen, I was upset how bloody this movie was. When I left the cinema, I thought "This is a Disney movie". Perhaps I was jaded, and I did not see it again, as was my want for Sci Fi. Now blood and gore are everywhere, so I should see it again.

Holly crap... Am I the only lunatic on earth who strongly thinks that Joseph Bottoms is Buster Crabbe's perfect doppelgänger and should have been cast as Queen's "saviour of the universe" in the De Laurentis reboot of Flash Gordon, instead of insipid Sam Jones ? This could have been a nice tribute to the original SF jock... Joseph and Buster really look like father and son... It's beyond amazing. It is weird... Try both names on Google. You'll understand what I mean...

What beacon? There wasn't any beacon. The Palomino was returning home from a deep space mission and got pulled slightly off-course by the gravitation of the titular black hole. It discovered the Cygnus by chance while scanning it. I think someone got their details mixed up with "2001."
