This is one my favorite classic sci-fi movies. A bit underrated if you ask me. I never knew that the actor ad libbed his line asking for protection from the Maximillian robot. That line had always made sense to me because I imagined the robot as a barely controlled monster, like trying to keep a tiger for a pet. And the ending where he wound up inside the robot for eternity always creeped me out as a kid! It seemed like a fittingly hellish ending for the doctor.

One of my favourite sci-fi films of all time. I have always felt this was a superior film in many ways to Star Wars and Star Trek TMP, with a brilliant premise, strong script, amazing special effects, and great acting. Love this film! One complaint.... There is no way that the fire ball that breaks through the hull and rolls ominously towards them wouldn't have caused explosive decompression and sucked then all into space. NO way.
@trhansen3244
@trhansen3244 2 месяца назад
There is a way. Joe Biden figured it out a few years ago. See, the fireballs sealed the ship as they went down the ship. The pressure actually increased within the ship but the hull was equipped with pressure relief valves which immediately opened at approximately 28.4 psi. President Biden also noted they would have then closed when the ship started losing hull integrity all over, experiencing what he called 'catastrophic' damage. But, as he noted, the ship's frame was largely intact when it entered the black hole.

As 17 year-old agnostic... I _loved_ the ending. Not the Reinhardt in hell part... The idea of an angel leading them through the path out of the white hole so they didn't taint heaven... just appealed to me. A lot. I don't usually care for remakes but I would love to see this one redone with a massive script rewrite. Some of the core concepts of this movie could have driven a really, really good story. The idea of a scientist riding the edge of a black hole in a missing ship with a zombie-like crew for decades is a really cool, base concept. The '79 move, and I actually like it, just had so many problems that needed to be fixed. I would love to see the basic story idea in the hands of a real script writer and director.

@AndrewGivens
@AndrewGivens Месяц назад
I agree, and would actually like to see a not shot-for-shot remake, but a close reinterpretation with, as you say, stronger key elements. I've thought this for a good ten years now. - Yet: Isn't 'Interstellar' basically the unauthorised rewrite of this movie? A mission to find a habitable planet, following after a first lost one; an oddly-shaped robot with character qualities that grate on the crew; a mentally unhinged lone survivor of the stranded first mission, close to a black hole; horror movie / ghost story elements; a final plunge through into the unknowable - and revelation? Yep, seems like the whole 'haunted house movie in space with a black hole' was redone by Nolan - and that's even if you discount 'Event Horizon' from the candidacy (because that one is significantly more different again).

Definitely need to clean up the wooden dialogue and maybe some more complexity to why they stayed ("everyone knows") and drop the wild west shootouts those are overdone. Have Denis Villeneuve direct and I'm sure it will blow us away. But I'm worried Disney would try and franchise it with multiple sequels and somehow make it political.

As a kid, I was given a tour of the Disney Burbank lot one quiet Saturday in 1978 by recently retired Disney animator, Jack Buckley. My father had taken the family to CA on a business trip - I was a huge Disney nut and aspiring animator and my father was able to arrange through some people he knew to get me a tour. Mr. Buckley picked me at our hotel and took me over to Disney Burbank lot. I was shown the whole animation department, they were working on The Fox and the Hound at the time, and Mr. Buckley had me draw some in-betweens to some key frames that were sitting on one animator's desk. So cool! Part of his tour took me through sound stages and I was able to watch the filming of some of the special effects for The Black Hole. I saw the hero model ships all mounted to various armatures, the lighting and backdrop - I was mesmerized. I don't remember the level of security that Dan describes in his video. When we walked in Mr. Buckley said, "Mind if we watch for a bit?" And a few the guys (who obviously knew him) said, "Yeah, sure!". Man, I was lucky! PS I still have the Fox and the Hound in-betweens I drew that day under Mr. Buckley's guidance.

Following that scene up, the "being" floating down the shining tunnel, I took to be Jesus making sure that Reinhart got his proper punishment for what he did to his crew, as well as his creation. I'm also unsure of the "cloaked figures" walking along the fires of Hell, if they are the crew of the Cignus, or the condemned who were already there.
@starbrand3726
@starbrand3726 Месяц назад
@@IggyStardust1967 I thought that shinny tunnel being was more angel than Jesus, but the idea is the same. I believe those other beings in Hell were former sinners being punished. Some of them could have been former crew members. Not the innocent ones Reinhardt brainwashed, but remember some of the crew joined Reinhardt in his takeover.
@IggyStardust1967
@IggyStardust1967 Месяц назад
@@starbrand3726 I understand why you would say "Angel", but (to me) the position of the being "in the shape of a cross/crucified person" is what made me think it was Jesus himself. Also, given the absolute evil things that Reinhart did, "the boss" would likely handle that one, personally. If you take my meaning. Plus, being trapped in/merged with Maximillion (his most evil creation) was a fitting punishment. The only thing about that, to me, is that he/they appeared to "rule" in Hell. Or, at least, be in charge of some. Which may have been indicative of Reinhart being Satan himself. There are many levels to the imagery of that scene. Which is why I found the ending not only satisfying, but also quite in depth and open to interpretation. Much like the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey. For the "hooded figures", yeah, I'm thinking the same thing, upon reflection about it again. Probably a mix of both "previous sinners", and those who helped Reinhart do what he did. Also, when Reinhart mentioned his crew "they didn't make it back?", along with that smirk of his.... which he followed with, "Pity. Such a good crew." that was about as sincere as the sun is cold. That told me that none of them actually left the ship. Kate's father may have actually led the charge against Reinhart and Maximillion, but likely didn't have enough of the crew with them to pull it off. Kinda reminds me of that Star Trek Next Generation episode "The Pegasus", where Will Riker, as an ensign fresh out of Starfleet Academy, defended his captain during a mutiny, simply because he was too naive to know better. I tend to notice parallels like that. Especially with shows/movies I love and watch dozens of times. =D
@starbrand3726
@starbrand3726 Месяц назад
@@IggyStardust1967 I love the idea of interpretation. Not getting a solid answer and allowing our imaginations to run with theories is fun. Now, with the Reinhardt/Max merge theory. I got the impression that Max was in control. I felt like Reinhardt was trapped inside him with zero control. I base that on the horrified look in his eyes as he realizes where he is. Max is a robot, robots don't have souls, so how could it even be in Hell? All apologies to Futurama's Robot Hell and RoboDevil. 😂

The mad scientist should be played by Whoopi Goldberg. Alex should be played by Terrence Howard. Captain Dan by Don Cheadle. Pizer played by Michael Jordan. Kate played by Zendaya. Harry played by Rosie O'Donnell. We leave out the old broken down robot but the voice of VINCENT will be Oprah Winfrey. Director? Michelle Obama. Yes, THAT Michelle Obama. She has been studying film for many years now and is reportedly looking to direct a feature film. This would be perfect for her.

I also like the ships, palomino has no gravity and Cygnus feels like what I imagine early interstellar craft to look like. No molded plastic and frills, pipes, exposed steel and inches between you and vacuum...

Three points: 1) Disney really dropped the ball on this--they had some truly frightening concepts and instead of making it their first PG, should have made it a hard R; 2) Alan Dean Foster got the Splinter of the Mind's Eye gig because he ghostwrote the Star Wars novelization; 3) You're spot on about the wooden delivery of the dialog, but Casablanca is for some reason considered a classic film and all of the dialog in it is delivered with all the warmth and sincerity of a Dragnet episode.

The line "Protect me from Maximilian" never really confused me ... Reinhardt didn't want Max' to kill Alex Durant, and even tries to order him not to ... So seeing him then be afraid of his creation makes perfect sense.

I think it was an important line in giving the impression that Max was a danger to everyone. A bully to even his creator. I think it rounded out max’s character a lot.

And yet Reinhardt was berating Maximillian later on over the sentrys failing to take out the Palomino crew. The man is a practiced liar with a questionable grip on his own sanity. His words cannot be taken at face value.

"Let your inner 10 year old out and enjoy it." Well, as a 10 year old in 1979, I did enjoy The Black Hole. But the thing about it, even now, is that the Black Hole really did feel like a Disney live action film. The camera angels and color saturation seemed like something out of a 60s Disney movie.

17:10 I don't think Disney will reboot this. It would undercut Star Wars. Personally, I hope it's not rebooted. "Modern" Disney will pervert it, e.g. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, post End Game Marvel and Willow.✌🏾

The meteor shower was cool too and the sight of a giant meteor rolling inside the ship and you get to watch the silhouette of the crew running in front of it. The fight between Maximus and Vincent was awesome. Watching Bob die was hard and made me cry.

Robert Forster died in 2019 and Yvette Mimieux in 2022. Considering the film was made 45 years ago and many cast members were the right age for the role. That's really not bad.

I'm on a few model builder pages on FB. There is a guy who 3D printed a USS Cygnus. It's pretty big and spectacular. Did a wonderful job. Also there is someone building a full size V.I.N.C.E.N.T. as well. Disney needs to clean house before they consider a reboot.

I did have a magazine article somewhere years ago about the Cygnus model. It was about 25 feet long, I mean it was big for a model like that. Too bad it got smash up. I think they should do the same with Disney now. Stick it all in a box, drop it, smash it all up, shove it in a dumpster and start all over again from scratch.
