I'm shaving this week with both razors to see how similar they are and which one I prefer. The Sabre, which is quite expensive in comparison to a vintage ER 1912 razor bought online. I saw one, just the other day for £1.20!
The soap today is from The Stirling Soap Company, and is their Autumn smelling soap. Guys, it is fantastic!

I reckon that this might just be one of the best ever side-by-side shaves out there. A truly great shave, Mark. Absolutely bostin, mucker! Wishing you and your mum a great weekend and week to come.

Wonderful review of both razors. Always amazes me how such an old razor still stands up against these newer ones. And Sterling soaps, always a good choice. Very enjoyable, thank you for posting.

Thank you, Andrew. It is amazing really, that these old razors are still going strong on really showing no signs of stopping for another 100 years. You're right, mate - you can't go wrong with Stirling.

Hi Mark- Great shave and razor comparisons; thank you! A very thorough and informative presentation of these two razors. I’m glad the edge-setting for the straight razors has been going well. I’m very familiar with sharpening kitchen knives, but razors are another matter, with their own definite challenges and rewards. I hope your weekend has been going smoothly. Be safe and be well. Best regards, as always, my friend!

I had an excellent 3-pass shave with my Gem 1912 with Gem blade this morning. I also have a Gem Jr. and a Gem Micromatic Clog Pruf. If I could only use these 3, I would be perfectly happy (although I do have more razors than is really proper!).

The usual great comparison test shave. Two nice razors, however I love the vintage razors as you know, but really enjoy the tests. I use Blue Stratos AF. It's a great scent and value for money. Makes me think of Rodney's Blue Stratos Aftershave gift to Delboy. Have a safe weekend Mark.

Great video as always Mark! Really pleased the bevel setting is going well! I wouldn't worry too much about the Coticule having a lowish grit level. I think anything after 8k should give you a more than shaveable edge. We tend to try and go higher and higher in grit ratings thinking its getting a better edge but all my best edges (to me)were made on 8k to 10k stones. The 15 to 20k stones didn't shave me as well or as smoothly. Glad you're more confident with it now. Love the comparison shave I'm a Gem Ever Ready fan too.. they are really hard to beat.. although the Schicks are giving them a good run at the mo! All the best my friend

Hi Mike. Well, I have had an interesting experience: I shaved with the razor and it was very good, but on the second shave, it really wasn't good. I can only think I did something while stropping; I have removed the canvas part of the strop in favour of the suede and then the finished leather side. I took the razor back to the higher stones, this time going coticule, 10k and 12-15k natural stones. I got one heck of an edge but it was super sharp and a little uncomfortable because of that. In the way that a feather blade is sometimes harsh. Very interesting.

I prefer the Sabre to any of my vintage GEM-styles despite its longer, weightier handle. It's got better blade control and is quieter to use. (I've never really gotten used to the audio feedback on most of the vintage models, even knowing it's not as bad as it sounds.) That said, the Sabre's handle is a definite negative. I don't like long, heavy handles to begin with, and this razor just doesn't feel enough like a GEM-style for me to be fully happy about it. Of course one adjusts, but after my first few uses I put in my two cents, asking about a lighter, shorter handle. Don't hold your breath waiting for one. And the unique threading precludes switching to another handle, so that's no way around the problem. It's still my favorite in the genre, but I reach for one of the oldies whenever I want to remember what it is like shaving with a GEM-style. Your advice to me to get one was spot on, and it was good to hear you repeat it again. I think people may be put off by the paint scraper look or, on first use, by the scratchy sound. But it is just a great way to shave, and vintage models are not getting any easier to find.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving Год назад
Paint scraper look 😂 Brilliant. Fair play to you asking for a lighter handle. I would love to take some of the weight out of the handle, I don't now if I am brave enough!

I still haven't been able to get my grubby little mitts on a 1912. Every time I see one of reasonable (for me) price, it turns out to be in the US and either doesn't post or is exorbitantly expensive to post.

Great shave. I don't have the Sabre, although I would love to try it. I do have some great 1912s. I think perhaps you are on to something in the difference between ss and nickel in the smoothness on the face, surely more noticeable in an SE than a DE as there is more contact with the top cap.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving Год назад
Thank you. I honestly don't think that there is much difference at all, on that Sabre plate, which is the mild plate. So, for those that would like to have, at least some of the Sabre experience, the 1912 is a much cheaper option. There is a 1912 with an art deco sun decoration on the top cap! I keep looking. 😀 I do prefer the smoother chrome plating.
@oopolo1454
@oopolo1454 Год назад
Oh yes the illusive " Ever-Ready Chromium Stropper Set" or "Sunray " set . Well I don't want to make you jealous 😏 but I have that set and it is beautiful.
@oopolo1454
@oopolo1454 Год назад
P.S. I think the chrome is smoother than the nickel but the best way is to do away with the top cap altogether. Two mildish lather catchers, designed for a flat Gem blade, I would recommend are the "Gem Junior Bar" and the "Star Cru-Steel". I know, too much information but it is SEptember.

Did not do well the last time I tried the 1912, I believe it was the blade, the biggest problem is finding some good blades so I might try it with a trimmed up (just the wings I believe) DE blade at some stage.👍😎🤟

Isn't the more rigid Gem-type blade an integral part of the Gem shaving experience? in which case the use of a trimmed-down thinner, more flexible double-edged blade would defeat the very nature of the Gem/Sabre razor.
@leehaseley2164
@leehaseley2164 Год назад
Not that I know anything about honing, Mark, but out of interest, what is the highest grit level for a whet stone? Is it that 12K you mentioned?
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving Год назад
that is an interesting question and I'm not sure of the answer. I have a natural stone that is rated 12-15k and I have had a razor finished on a 20k stone. At this level you are essentially just polishing the bevel.

Great shave Mark. I don’t know enough about the ER razors as I do with gems. The Gem 1912 there was 2 versions. This ER you have looks like the “squat head” 1912 which in my opinion is the most mild Gem there is. Even more so then the featherweight or pushbutton etc. The more common flat back 1912 is very aggressive for me on par or rivals the micromatic OC model. I’ve been wanting to try this treet carbon blades. The Gem carbon ones I do not suggest 😂 Have you tried the PTFE coated gem blades? That’s all I use. Curious how you would compare them to the Treets ?
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 3 месяца назад
Hi, thanks for writing. I've wondered how the Ever Ready compares to the Gem razors which, as you know, are more prevalent in the U.S. I do have a U.S. Ever Ready 1912, so I will have to compare that to my British version. I do like the Gem/ER Heavy Flat Top - very nice. The PTFE blades are good, but I find them to be a bit harsh feeling on the first shave, or two. I find the old Treet blades are a bit more gentle (smoother). Cheers.👍
