Mike (Michael C. Williams) discovers some strange stick figures hanging from trees in a nearby clearing.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Combining Hi-8 video with black-and-white 16 mm film, this film presents a raw look at what can happen when college students forego common sense and enter the world of voodoo and witchcraft. Presented as a straightforward documentary, the film opens with a title card explaining that in 1994, three students went into the Maryland back woods to do a film project on the Blair Witch incidents. These kids were never seen again, and the film you are about to see is from their recovered equipment, found in the woods a year later. The entire movie documents their adventures leading up to their final minutes. The Blair Witch incident, as we initially learn from the local town elders, is an old legend about a group of witches who tortured and killed several children many years ago. Everyone in town knows the story and they're all sketchy on the details. Out in the woods and away from their parked car (and civilization), what starts as a school exercise turns into a nightmare when the three kids lose their map. Forced to spend extra days finding their way out, the kids then start to hear horrific sounds outside their tents in the pitch-black middle of night. They also find strange artifacts from (what can only be) the Blair Witch, still living in the woods. Frightened, they desperately try to find their way out of the woods, with no luck. Slowly these students start to unravel, knowing they have no way of getting out, no food, and it's getting cold. Each night they are confronted with shrieking and sounds so haunting that they are convinced someone is following them, and they quickly begin to fear for their lives. The film premiered in the midnight movie section at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival.

The turning point in the movie for the emotions of the three main characters. It's the first time they're presented with physical evidence to suggest there's a genuine supernatural presence preventing them from escape. That moment where Mike just starts screaming in despair juxtaposed with Josh aimlessly walking off screen to go and cry is so powerful.

I see this complaint, like "analyzing the movie" is useless - but like Mr. Plinkette says, even if you don't notice depth and logic, your brain does. It's what makes something good. It's what makes the difference between, say Blair Witch and Blair Witch(2016). It's embarrassing that you're so out of the race that you don't know there's one going on, and then when you find out, you act like it didn't matter.@@s1ash1

grave encounters 1 is as good if not better, but blair witch project still beats all. i think its because you never really see the witch or whatever that was hunting them. creep 1 and 2 is up there as well.

The most scariest part about a haunted forest is imagining what they're like when they're empty with no people walking around. The stick figures give the woods an uncanny feeling knowing the place is supposed to be empty, yet their something evil lurking in this forest. I wonder if this was where slenderman got its inspiration from.

No the scariest and most disturbing part of this whole film for me was the group after getting all the warning signs and red flags from the locals that if you go in you will never come out still decides to go in anyway despite all warnings and red flags they still head in. This is a classic “FU*KING WHITE PEOPLE” meme moment, and I’m a white 24 year old and I know better.

Witches LOVE woods. Don't under estimate them. Stay protected their are good witches and bad ones and dont confuse them with the ones you see on holloween with green skin warts and pointy hats although some CHOOSE to wear a hat.

My father and his friend apparently ran into a satinic cult in the woods when they were kids.He said as they were approaching one of the guys turned around with blood dripping from his mouth and hissed at them. Never ran away that fast in his life.

Seeing this in theatres was a WHOLE different experience. It needs to be watched in the dark, loudly and with the mindset that this really is found footage. Then it's a very effective forror film. I'd rather they re-release this in cinemas rather than that stupid remake/sequel. This film is incredible especialy on the big screen. I remember watching it in 99' at the theatre and nearly pissing myself.

but still in theaters, I have the feeling you cannot feel that much fear or despair, since you're surrounded by dozens of people who might react differently to the scenes, some might even laugh at scary scenes which greatly reduces the fear element, I think it's even scarier to watch it completely absolutely alone during nightime even on a small screen

The thing that makes this scene, and the whole movie in general, genuinely disturbing and frightening is the complete and utter silence, used to it's greatest effect in this scene. Most found-footage type rules follow that rule, but the difference is that most of them take place in a house, or somewhere where there's a lot of ambient noise, but these woods are quiet. It's eerie.

That's one thing I pondered, ever notice how you dont really hear wildlife at all after they disturb one of those 7 cairns? No animals, no birds, no passing planes, nothing. I live in the country, even on the quietest day theres still birds chirping etc. That really stood out to me.

I watch this movie at least once a year (usually around Halloween). All 3 do a great job but Mike in particular is the one that we as the audience relate to. We he gets really scared, so do we.

Raj Sihota it's not the real footage it's a replica of teens that went missing and they made it into a documentary. The actors are still alive and they explained fully being interviewed with the fans.

They had outdoor screenings in a wooded area in the summer near where I live, they usually do like a noir night, a John Hughes night, and a horror movie night. They decided to play this for their horror movie night last year, it was incredibly awesome to watch it in the woods but also very creepy

@@MrParkerman6 the movie had not 1, but 2 directors, who also wrote the screenplay, and although the dialogue was improvised by the actors, as well as they were in charge of all the filming, they were given direction as to what should happen each day of filming and the actors would make it happen.

Heather was really pushing them too far. It was unbelievably clear they were in a dangerous situation, but she just wanted to dramatize it for her own credit. Josh and Mike told her many times they just wanted to leave and she wasn't honest with them. She got them killed.

@@SamuelBlack84 😶 i think they could've. they were given gradual 'warnings'. first, the dead mouse. the rockpiles were the second and probably the 'cuttoff point'. notice after they knocked one over, the weird sh** started. that's where they messed up. that was a graveyard. the rocks marked somebody's grave. they made something mad. then there were rockpiles outside THEIR tents. at the graveyard, they shoulda shot the footage respectfully from a distance and then carefully and quietly left. maybe they would've been allowed to. i feel like that was their last chance. just my thoughts.

I don't know, man. It's because you're in the absolute middle of nowhere, isolated, miles and miles into the woods, and there are things that have no godly reason for being there displayed like some art project in the middle of all of it. It doesn't matter who the hell did it, it's bizarre and illogical to the point of being terrifying. Imagine, you're lost for days, so far into the woods that you don't even see litter from previous passerby, and come upon something like this. It's the fact of something so deliberate and made up intelligently being in the middle of absolutely nothing that makes it so frightening, at least for me.

I love, how the simple but effective setting, the situation of being trapped and lost in a forest far away from civilization, being out of control, dealing with a threat you can't see and the modest staging perfectly apply to the viewer, by transporting the fear, we all would have in that situation and animating the fantasy to create a disturbing version of what we can see... I mean, it's not a really scary movie, with disturbing imagery, cruel Monsters, Splatter, gore or perfect atmosphere like 'The Conjuring' or 'Evil Dead', 'The Hills have Eyes', 'The Descent', etc. but it sophisticatedly uses scant means and tricks to create an atmosphere and setting that perfectly works... If I imagine watching the movie in the middle of the night, up in my Room in an empty and dark house, even in the of nearly 21, I surely would constantly turn around and walk down the stairs slightly paranoid... That's how a lot of classic Horrorfilms built up tension: Don't show, animate the viewer's fantasy, less is more...

To me, the mythology of the Blair Witch more interesting than the movie itself. But I do truly love the original movie. This scene with the stick figures and the scene where she finds the severed tongue in the bundle of sticks really stand out to me as being particularly uncomfortable. And when Mike is crying at the end of the movie while looking for Josh is very distressing to me. But I really love the documentary movies related to this movie. Well worth checking out. One in particular where they investigate the boy that escaped being killed by Rustin Parr but witnessed the other seven kids being killed is very unnerving to watch.

Fun Fact: The actors didn't know that this was going to happen, they didn't know they were gonna find the house (except josh as he was told by the directors to go there in the night) and the childing talking, sticks crackling , stone piles, the stickmen and the wrapped up teeth and blood was all completely unexpected to the actors, these were genuine reactions

Idk if anyone else noticed this but one little thing that really works is the fact that after they lose the map, the weather never changes, it no longer rains so the only time that lasts is daylight into nighttime and repeat, it really adds to that idea that they're now in this endless realm where even weather doesn't exist

Think about it. What took them days to get this far in the woods with something hunting along the way. Someone/something else hiked this far and spent days making these things in the middle of the woods... For what reason? Thats the scary part for me. These woods seem to mostly untouched by humans. So someone hiked just as far just to make these figures. Did they too get lost and captured by the witch? Was it the witch her self that made these?

You have to imagine the purpose and dedication behind the entity creating these stick figures, as the bigger ones seem rather elaborate, needing some time to make and erect. It is this malevolent motivation underpinning the crude yet almost detailed work ( there are several different designs it appears ) of the figures hanging in the trees that can play with your mind..not in the good way. Almost that this force has a power, wisdom and visceral threat that we ( in the actors shoes ) will never be able to understand, possess, or worse.conquer.!!!Also the woods themselves here add considerably to the menace. They seem at the same time, both open at ground level, but densely enclosed further up the tree canopy. This subtle arrangement in the mostly deciduous forest really aids the eerie nature of the location, much more than it would have done in late spring with soft and lush new growth. Particularly enjoyed the scenes with the sun gradually dropping away through the canopy each day, you just know that trouble is brewing when it completely fades..only matter of time.. hehehe)). Ode to a crafty witch!!

You know there's a such thing as overanalyzing right? I wouldn't read into it to much, they were on a tiny budget when filming this movie and making figures out of sticks is as cheap as it gets

Django Leo people love this movie and there was an actual lore created around it. A lot of the fun and scary aspects of the film is wondering about the things that are not explained and never will be, much like real life. I understand the point you’re making but it’s putting yourself in the shoes of a situation like this which really makes a lot of people’s minds run wild with creativity.

Just a little fact about this movie, the 3 didn't know what they were walking into each day when they were filming stuff like this. They'd be given a GPS location each day to walk to, so this is one of the moments when they didn't know what they were gonna find. This will always be in my top 10 favorite horror movies.

I honestly agree. For me the top 5 creepiest scenes are. 1. Seeing stick figures in the trees 2. Hearing Josh calling for help that isn’t him 3. Seeing the blood from Josh (not sure what piece of human party part it is from him) 4. Seeing Heather in front of the camera at night giving a speech and then hearing something) 5. Heather is running and screaming in the haunted ruined house and heads to the basement and we see Mike facing the corner to not look at the Blair Witch. She sees Mike and then dies automatic once’s the Blair Witch is seen. If you think about. It’s so much eerie that way now that I think of it. I liked how real it felt and how respectable the movie was to not let us see The Blair Witch. Because once you see what Heather see. You die instantly. I can totally understand why people were so scared to see it killing them off one after another. Being stalked like prey. The Blair Witch was literally on top of the good chained and made the humans rock bottom compared to the Witch. A movie that made people not want to go into a forest. Specially if it’s cursed and has a history of being haunted by a Witch that controls the woods of not letting people leave. Once you’ve entered the woods there is no going back to reality so called home and safety.
