A touching children's film from Russia by acclaimed director Boris Dolin. It was released in 1963 and won the Grand Prize of the 1964 Venice Film Festival.
Pelka can't fly south with the rest of the pelicans because it is blind. Vasija, a young boy, takes the bird home and cares for it. A strong and touching friendship develops between Vasija and Pelka as they travel far to find a cure for blindness...
This is the American-English dubbed version, cut back from it's original length of 63 minutes to 47 minutes. Perhaps some of the omitted scenes were deemed too stark for western children's eyes at the time?
