@@bretwein3793Thanks, man. But seriously, the argentinians who know about the boers think highly of you and your culture. Some of us want the government to start a program to bring boers to the Patagonia or to other regions and let them give a good use to all that virgin land we have. Who knows? Maybe they settle down, get assimilated and by 2043, Los Pumas will have won their first Rugby World Cup title thanks to Juan De Klerk and Mariano Van Den Heever, haha!

Los galeses que también se instalaron en la patagonia sí han podido mantener su idioma y lo siguen enseñando. Tal vez sea cuestión de proponérselo y empezar a enseñár afrikaans a sus descendientes y a toda aquella persona que quiera aprenderlo.

***** Absolutely - thank you so much. Since this is a trailer one does not have the complete picture of their circumstances but I can most certainly hear and see that they are not backwards. One gets an idea that the environment is very secluded and harsh which gives me a sense of 'distance.' And then, although they speak Afrikaans some of the words and sounds do sound 'old'. And this is all mixed with their now local language in a way that adds to the foreignness. And then in South Africa over the years the Afrikaans Boere-gemeenskap has also been dying out. We hardly see an Afrikaans boere-tannie playing the trek-klavier. How fantastic to see this. Thank you for introducing us to these members of our Afrikaans family... it brings tears to many eyes! We are all watching out for the complete movie.

Unfortunately he died before I was born and so I never met him, but apparently I have his personality haha! I will definitely ask my family! My great-grandfather's farm's name was Leeukuil and my great-great-grandfather's (JJ Henning) farm's name was Morgenzon, and he was buried there. My mother (Margarieta Paula) and other family members tried to look for his grave when she was in Argentina in 1973, but they couldn't find it. It is remarkable that they are still there, this little isolated community of Afrikaners who didn't like the Brits. It's also telling that they are in Patagonia, which was so instrumental in Darwin's scientific development - they're a true testament to the evolutionary imperative 'adapt or die'. You can hang on to the old ways for only so long.

What a beautiful project. An exploration of the spirit of a nomadic people, settlers re-settled. The spirit of the Afrikaner, whatever that may mean, is one of connection to the land, to space and place, something to be celebrated. Add to this, the deep emotion that comes with making "home" away from "home". I salute you guys for embarking on such a project to tell such a tale!

nomadic is the wrong word. nomads move frequently and are used to it. these guys made one Big move which took a whole lot more effort and balls and change that a nomadic would have.
@HDrakes
@HDrakes 10 лет назад
Agree to disagree Gavin. Perhaps your understanding of nomads and mine is different. The Afrikaner - a generalised notion that does not adequately capture the diverse whole - have been, and still are, nomadic in many ways having left Europe for Cape Town, CT for South Africa, Africa and the world. Interesting that, even after 100 years, there is a sense of wanting to return, to rediscover "home". As for "more effort and balls", I spent time with a nomad who walked from Nairobi to Cape Town and back - no passport, money, or support - which took a lot of guts!
@gavlang

nomads move often as a way of life. they don't have a home. they live everywhere. your understanding of nomadic is clearly plain wrong.

Very rare to see something about these Boer descendants as 1 always knows the history but never hears anything of them BUT listening to them also brings up many questions. Firstly how is it that they speak "Afrikaans" when the Boers never called their language Afrikaans and "Afrikaans" only became a language after these people had already left. Would really be interesting to hear more of these people before they all gone.

Ek het iewers gelees dat hulle in latere jare, toe die eerste vliegtuie in hulle nuwe land begin vlieg het, 'n lughawe bestempel as 'n "vliegtuigstasie". Dit is 'n baie mooi poging gewees in my opinie.

But did you guys know that Afrikaans is basically 18th Century Dutch? I am South African and speak Afrikaans as my second language. I often had meet people from Holland and try to talk with them in Afrikaans, but they cant help but laugh at me sometimes because they say, "we do not speak like that anymore". I think their language has evolved since then and Afrikaans (18th century Dutch) had been preserved as it was then until today...
@ingridlamprecht2667

Incorrect. The Dutch that came here spoke Dutch and nothing else. Afrikaans evolved from Dutch, Flemish, German and became what is spoken today.

Can a dutch person understand the language of a afrikaner?
@jeroendaem
@jeroendaem 9 лет назад
Yes, easily. I understood every bit of it. As far as linguistics is concerned, you could still consider Afrikaans and Dutch one and the same language. It's only in 1983 that when the then South African parliament adopted the new constitution, 'official' ties with Dutch were severed. That was a tit for tat thing. One year earlier, in 1982, the Dutch government had suspended cultural cooperation with SA because of apartheid. Until then, Afrikaans was considered to be the South African form of Dutch, with its own grammatical peculiarities, words and expressions (hence the alternative names for Afrikaans, which are Cape Dutch/Kaaps Hollands or Afro-Dutch/Afro-Nederlands). In 1994, when SA became more of a democracy, the Nederlandse Taalunie (Dutch Language Union - the official body that governs the Dutch language and has the Netherlands, Flanders, Suriname and the Netherlands Antiles as its members) invited SA to join. However, since 1994 the ANC has been waging a war on Afrikaans and is doing its best to raze it from the face of the earth. Subsequently, SA did not join the language union and officially Afrikaans is left to fend for itself. Nevertheless, SA has an observer status in the language union. The union also pours a lot of money in projects to support the language. But in my opinion, Afrikaans and Dutch will further drift apart. After all, I think there is not much willingness on the Afrikaner side to keep Afrikaans more or less in line with standard Dutch, contrary to what happens in the English speaking world, where there are many different forms of the language all over the world but mutual intelligibility is also assured...

@thremeneishkveineis7260 9 лет назад
Thanks for all the imformation.. One question though, How is the relationship today between South Africa and the Netherlands? Do they even feel close considering the racist (ANC) goverment of S.A?
@jeroendaem
@jeroendaem 9 лет назад
Official relations are good, as they are with Belgium. The Netherlands never officially interferes in the linguistic policies of a foreign nation, neither in SA, nor in Belgium (not even when Dutch was forbidden as an official language in Belgium). In both Flanders (Belgium) and the Netherlands there is a historical awareness that we share the same distant past with the Afrikaners. As I have written before, there is again cultural cooperation but it is especially on the 'intellectual' level (writers, academics). The 'common' people have more or less forgotten about each other's existence, hence the funny comments of Dutch and Afrikaans speakers in blogs that they are surprised to 'learn' that they can easily understand the other one's language. I have got to admit that the continuing extremism on the Boer side doesn't make it easy to support their otherwise just cause (defence of Afrikaans, the massive killing of Boers on their farms and the return of race laws in SA, but this time pro black and anti white/coloured). Also, Boers in general, and many Afrikaners, today still act as if Afrikaans is only spoken by whites. The truth is: the majority of its speakers is coloured (i.e. of mixed Khoi-Dutch or Malay-Dutch decent).

Jeroen Daem Once again thank you for a informative comment. Do you think the idea of a "independent boer stat" is good/realistic? Where the boers get some land from S.A and therby create their own state, with a population of only boers/and other white people, is that a bad idea? I think it would be interesting to see how this boer state or "Afrikaaner state" would develop, and if S.A would collapse since all white people would hopefully move to the newly independent Boer state. I would want to call the state, the "independent state of the Afrikaneer".

Thremeneis Hkveineis The Boers fought very long and hard for that ideal, but also suffered greatly for it. So the enthusiasm for being atonomous once again (Orange free state, Transvaal republic) has been decreasing dramatically. I suggest you watch the documentary by Louis Theroux Its very interesting. PS in this globalized world the idea of Nation states getting a little old Look the EU for instance

Marko, what he said is falsehood. He is incapable of caring about facts, only for his own agenda, which is murder. One of my friends, Rico Fourie, is proud to have Portuguese ancestors. Many South Africans have French names, both family and Christian names, because Huguenots were a major component of the original settlers. And there are many Italians. There are blue eyed blonds (that's what I am), but many Afrikaners have darker hair, eyes, and often skin.

These are the kind of immigrants that should not be allowed into countries, the ones that even after generations don’t integrate and feel like they actually have more love for a land they have never seen, not even their parents . At the same time it doesn’t make sense .. in that case they might as well have more love for the Netherlands than for Africa, since in origin their ancestors actually come from the Netherlands.

I am honestly so thankful that you are not the minister of Argentina dealing with immigrants, or any other country for that matter. At any rate, how would you know how they would turn out after a century unless you have some gift to see the future ? Regarding their loyalty to Argentina I have to say that, given the kind of character they display in this video (and many similar ones on YT) there is no question in my mind that they also pay their taxes and keep to the laws of their new country. If they also contribute to the economy of Argentina why would their government find any fault with them ? Given their sense of honor, dignity and culture that particular quality actually makes them more attractive for any sensible regime. The same applies to Greek, Chinese, Italian communities in the USA. They pay their dues but still honour their heritage. Eventually they might "disappear" in the bigger mass of people over the course of time. A sad thing from my perspective, sitting in South Africa and watching these Patagonian Boers, but it is the natural course of things and I'm willing to accept it. It is a rather interesting field of study, considering the effect the French Huguenots had on the later culture in the early history of colonial South Africa. They only made out about 20-25 % of the early white population but their influence in terms of wine making and the protestant religion was very strong. So, eventually, it's all about character and making your presence felt that will determine how long your people and their culture will be around.

@@Spacekriek Argentina now only accept Bolivians, Paraguayans, and lately Venezuelans. Except for Venezuelans, others contribute nothing to the country, just receive plans from the government and there is an economic crisis right now. I think if people like Boers and other want to come, the government will be more than happy, also the people for they like to work it seems and Patagonia has oil and gas, a lot.
