Yes, Spite and Envy are indeed sisters. What were their parents thinking? 😁 I feel like the rest of your questions are more rhetorical, so I’ll refrain from answering. I love Apsalar’s arc in this book, and well said about her relationship with Cotillion. Totally cool that you enjoyed Curdle and Telorast! The Karsa/Samar Dev dynamic is something I really enjoy too. Yes, Corabb really develops nicely here - fantastic what happens with him and Fiddler. Did I hear you say Malazan MIGHT not be grimdark?! 😁 I’m glad your home experiment in your kitchen didn’t turn out like Y’Ghatan!

The seige of Y'Ghatan is probably my favourite chapter so far. The first time I read it, I had no idea how long it was and I stayed up until 4am on a school night just to finish that one more chapter. Cotillion and Apsalar are a fascinating pair to me too. I don't think they're supposed to be romantically connected. It's more just the deepest possible feeling of empathy; they have literally been each other. Cotillion feels bad for taking her life from her and Apsalar knows all the pain that Cotillion holds inside.
@Johanna_reads

Wow, couldn’t agree more with what you said about tertiary characters suddenly coming to the forefront and becoming favorites. That whole exchange between Fiddler and Corabb pulled my heart strings so much. This might be an unpopular opinion-and maybe you’ll agree-but I love Apsalar and Crokus apart more than together. I do love the exchanges between Apsalar and Cotillion. Loved hearing your thoughts and can’t wait to hear what you think about the second half of the book!

I was totally caught off guard by my super strong, visceral reaction to Taralack Veed replacing Mappo. I was just so incredibly angry and disgusted lol. Also, in a series where I'm not always super onboard with character's motivations (or just having a hard time tracking them) Corabb's turn to a "good guy" was super powerful for me. It was all laid out there as to why he would turn on Leoman and embrace the "enemies" before him and it made perfect sense. Really great stuff.

This was your most entertaining review by far, Mike. I love how much you are digging book 6. The siege of Y'Ghtan (sp?) was the most riveting piece of action I have ever read. I personally loved the dialogue with Karsa and Samar Dev. It's essentially a clash of tradition vs. progress, which I found very interesting. Your content is great Mike. Keep it up!

Ganoes Paran has now dethroned Quick Ben as my favourite character because I love how he functions within the story and the lore that is explained when he is around. So glad to see that this book lives up to the expectations and that you are enjoying it so much, I guess you can see why so many people think it is the best entry in the series (even though I too put Deadhouse Gates before it, for sentimental reasons). Y'Ghatan is possibly the best battle/action/suspense chapter in the series as well, but you'll see that Bonehunters packs at least two more tremendous punches.

Man, I don't see ANYBODY mentioning it, so maybe I'm just completely out of my mind, but it REALLY felt like Mappo and Icarium stumbled in to a god damn spaceship. Am I wrong? The technology being described sounds like a sci-fi-ass spaceship, and you reminding me that the short-tail Karsa killed had MACHINERY in it just further supports this. And yet, it was not mentioned in the video, and there's no mention of it in the comments. I feel like I'm a crazy person.
