I used to be a Creationist and even worked for Answers in Genesis for a few years. It's crazy to me how many of their ideas about Genesis are ripped straight out of Jubilees, but they'd deny it to their graves.

@Jesus Christ Is Lord "Scholar" and "Christian Bible" go together like "Ph.D" in "Lord of the Rings" studies. People who spend time and make a living off of stories for more than entertainment value, do nothing to advance the betterment of humanity. Searching for affirmations that one's world view about some ancient murder story -about a necessary self sacrifice by an avatar of a god to appease itself - is basically insane. Especially when the avatar claims to have the power to forgive. If the story of the Prodigal Son were accurate, the Father would have had "the good son" "unselfishly take the punishment" for the bad son ", making 'dad' happy" and folks proclaiming it a loving (and not messed up) family. That there are so many people who need to be told this in public forums explains why beLIEvers explains the need to call themselve "sinners". No self awareness of the stupidity of the claims. Disappointed regards.

Among the 900 or so texts of the Dead Sea Scrolls is the Book of Jubilees, a second- century retelling of Genesis and the first part of Exodus. Originally written in Hebrew, approximately 15 copies of the "Book of Jubilees" were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Millenia before Jubilees & Genesis (Old Testament) was the Sumerian Myth of Enki & Ninhursaja, which includes a Garden Paradise, Enki being convinced by Isimud (the Two-Faced God) to eat the Forbidden Plant, a Goddess (Ninti) born from his Enki’s Rib, & many other correlative parallels.

1)The romans placed a crown of thorns on Christ's head to mock him. 2) It is a plausible hypothesis that the romans 'invented' Christianity as a form of mockery for the jews. There is similarity in 1 & 2. 3) They subtly replaced the OT god with their own NT god, by breaking 1 god into three parts. (a ploy to subvert the OT god) 4) Christianity could very well might have be intended as a parody religion of Judaism, which the romans tolerated and subsequently promoted in order to mock and undermine Judaism. 5) The Jew were well know to be difficult to govern, and one of the best ways was to divide them from within, by promoting different sects within their religion, and Christianity at its beginning was a sect of Judaism.

@@Niatnuom_Esiotrot [MJ]: 1)The romans placed a crown of thorns on Christ's head to mock him. [AR]: True statement, only if you believe that Jesus was real. Otherwise, false. [MJ]: 2) It is a plausible hypothesis that the romans 'invented' Christianity as a form of mockery for the jews. There is similarity in 1 & 2. [AR]: Plausible, indeed. But there are many other plausibilities, to include the plausibility that Jesus (Man or Myth, or Man & Myth) was real. [MJ]: 3) They subtly replaced the OT god with their own NT god, by breaking 1 god into three parts. (a ploy to subvert the OT god) [AR]: Could be. Certainly plausible. But there could also be a deeper metaphysical meaning behind the whole thing, & just as the greatest Jewish & Christian Philosophers told us, literalism is the most basic way to understand the hidden mystical concepts. [MJ]: 4) Christianity could very well might have be intended as a parody religion of Judaism, which the romans tolerated and subsequently promoted in order to mock and undermine Judaism. [AR]: Could be. Certainly plausible. But many other postulations are also plausible. They are all worth exploring/investigating, considering the gravity of the topic at hand. [MJ]: 5) The Jew were well know to be difficult to govern, and one of the best ways was to divide them from within, by promoting different sects within their religion, and Christianity at its beginning was a sect of Judaism. [AR]: Very True. If you trace Orthodox Christianity back it is clear to see it has roots in Gnosticism, which came from Egypto-Judeo Mysticism, which in the case of Christianity came from the Greco-Egyptian Cult of Serapis.

@Niatnuom_Esiotrot 6. Rome replaced the Jews lunar calendar with the Julian, then Gregorian solar calendar. Renaming and reordering each month. April Fools Day is most likely a mockery of Jews whose new year is late March/ early April. 7. The days of the week were named after heavenly bodies, i.e. SUNday, MOONday, MARSday (denoted TUESday for the God of War, Tiu), MERCURY (Wed), JUPITER (Thorsday), VENUS, (Fri), and SATURnDAY. Obviously, for idol worship to force believers in God to submit to sacrilege within societies. They couldn't quite get away with removing the week system as nO oNe WanTeD to wORk morE tHan FivE dAyS iN a ROw.

I think Romans hired Josephus to create a new religion where paying taxes would be a religious duty. His two books may have been meant to be a reference for the Gospel writers for the different regions and traditions of the empire. He may be the author Q. Paul seems to know about him. Probably they liked Pharisees, as tax collectors, and devised Christianity to make the model work for everybody. If you owe some money to God, you need to pay with a lot of joy.

Derek, This is one of the most brilliantly academic presentations done by Mythvision yet. The MV Team (shout out to Neal) and the scholarship just keeps getting better and better. This content was just an amazing revelation of historical thought at that time. There is too much to comment on. I just have to watch it a second time to really absorb all the information and thought provoking ideas. I really don't think a lot of university courses are like this...exciting, "free wheeling", "mature" and something one wants to continue to learn more about after enjoying it the first time. Mongors humility and honesty is appreciated here. This seems like an area of lack of knowledge for many of us and that makes this exciting to see. A nudge to bring him back and talk about interconnections with Enoch and if Jubiless was used in the NT as it was clear that the Essenes had an interest here that was deep as it was with Enoch. Great interview!

Thank you, both! There's one more thing to add: The idea of mentioning the exact date of each story is meaningful. The book of jubilees places the sacrifice of Isaac on the 14th day of Nissan, which is the day of Passover. It thus connects the story with the second temple Passover celebration. It also mentions the name of the mountain, and calls it Mount Zion, connecting the story with the temple itself.

Super fun episode! Dr. Monger's research sounds fascinating and incredibly challenging. How he was able to remix (for lack of a better term) and reconstruct bits and pieces that other scholars had dismissed and make them fit the extant fragments well is especially important work: he's not only reemphasizing how much we don't know but his work cautions us to reexamine and question what we thought we were fairly certain of. He was a great guest and I'd love to see him on the show again to discuss his own research, Jubilees, DSS, or just biblical research generally. There were so many interesting topics that y'all just brushed on or didn't have time to fully discuss and I think y'all have a good rapport that would lend itself well to further discussions.

The scholar Margaret Barker believed that the solar calendar was used in the First Temple in Jerusalem, before the Babylonian lunar months were brought in, so all the apocalytic groups which believed the Second Temple was imperfect or corrupt used a solar calendar as they were preserving traditions from the First Temple. This is a fascinating text, but I don’t see how it challenges OT textual stability. This is a Midrash commentary on Genesis. Since Genesis is an untouchable text, the author had to find the gaps in the Genesis narrative and fill them in with Jubilees to fit their theological understanding. Something similar was done thorough the Middle Ages, some of these scenes even reminded me of some of Rabbi Shlomo’s commentary. This to me is like saying that since there are Study Bibles in the present that the Bible is still unstable.

Maybe some understanding of this creation contradiction. The enuma Elish, we tend to think, was an early story. But in the timeline of the ancient near east, as per the Babylonian creation myths, was actually quite late (no earlier than the 10th century bce). During the time before Hammurabi, Babylon was an unimportant village and marduk was all but an unknown god, sometimes syncretized with Enki. Babylon may have been a satellite city, like Beth Lahmu (Bethlehem) of Eriduan settlers. There is no concise Enuma Elish at this time or anytime before the late bronze age collapse, the dynastic babylonian families followed traditional gods pf Akkad and Sumer. There was an earlier story, the eridu genesis story that appears in part in the story of gilgamesh, and looking around the world for comparisons, that story was earlier (18th to 20th c BCE) than any other creation story. But even that pales in comparison to the Sumerian Kings list that appears to document a written history kept by the priests of Eridu and that date the flood back to between 2800 and 3000 BCE and a mysterious antediluvian period of 7 lugal with insane lifespans. In some of these stories there is a motif, something like an elemental goddess of saltwater, akin to tiamat, from which "good waters", Apsu, is extracted. The salt water diety would be the counterpart of the mother earth goddess. There are certain contradiction over the chronology of god beings. For one Eridu, the home of Apsu (killed by Enki), was settled 1200 years before Uruks first village rose, but it was abandoned and later reoccupied. But the Uruk diety, Anu, is born of these primordial gods, and Enki his son. While other stories has Enki and Ninhursag as the father of Anu. Probably at some point Enki and Apsu are conflations or different understanding of the same creation god, one version is "stupid" while the other is "wise". So given the age of the Shurrupak flood and the timing of civil writing we can imagine these are earlier evolving myths about creation that were never formalized and understood differently in different city states and at different times. So now to deal with the Levant. So here are some basic historical modes. Again there is the suggestion of an Enki cult that has some familiarity with the red sea, but we have no idea how old this cult is or whether its the red sea or just the western sea. This cult seems to be connected to Beth Lahmu, Yah cults of Arabia, mystic sages, familiar with volcanoes (Africa). There is also the familiarity of the Martu to sumerians, originally from the region near the mediterranean north of tyre/sidon. Formally the invasion of the northern levant in the 25th c BCE tells of a political authority of Sumerian origin, quickly replaced by a Akkadian authority and explaning the link between NW semetic and Akkadian as the seed for most of the semetic languages in the west. So again by the 25th c BCE there is a potential mesopotamian source for levantine creation stories. We also know that only a fraction of Jews were carried into exile. This means existing creation stories of the levant can persist until the end of exile, and can play into the two Jewish creation myths. But lets imagine the various tracts. So we know some of ancient Israelite culture is derive from Mesopotamia. We have a tract of culture that is borrowing from late neoassyrian/babylonian. We know from the dead sea scroll there is a cluster of Jewish sages living near medina, and we also know there are both greek and egyptian influences (bidirectional) on the Jews after babylonian exile. So we should imagine that depending on the area one is raised in there are different stories, weighed on various influential cultures. Summary. Mesopotamian culture did not have a fixed or global understanding of creation as might appear from the Enuma Elish, which is late and foundational in the shortlived neobabylonian Empire. At different times and for different reasons mesopotamian culture spread into the levant, probably along different paths. The foundational myths kept by Jahwist in the region (including arabia) are therefore expected to differ. One of the early (2 and 3rd millenium BCE) differences, the type of gods, the primacy of gods and the role of the waters in creation differed between mesopotamian myths. The bible deflates gods of mesopotamian into angels and spirits, eventually conflating gods with the power of Yahweh.

@@xiuhcoatl4830 Read WG Lambert. Babylonian creation myths. The ultimate authority on the matter. Quoting from the text. p. 465 "A thorough scrutiny of second millenium materials [1000-2000 bce in context] of all kinds has only so far revealed traces of materials from which the epic was composed." So this composes most of the bronze age, including the late bronze age collapse and the early iron age, the first of the Assyrian and Babylonian empires. "It _appears_ that toward the end of the millenium [~1000 bce], the author, starting or following a new trend among the priests of Marduk, composed a highly original work . . . .During the first millenium the basic ideas of the Epic . . . .made considerable headway in ousting other conceptions." "But traditions die hard, and even the political supremacy of the city of Babylon [Neobabylonian Empire] did not result in the suppression of deviant myths. The authors go onto describe the Enuma Elish as a failed canonization. Here the authors describe why there is a misconception, page 464. "..the fundemental misunderstanding has been the common assumption that the text contains the Babylonian cosmology [Babylonian refers to the period between the Dynasty of Hammurabi in the 18th century to the fall of the Neobabylonian enpire in the 6th century BCE] . . . .it is the longest and best preserved of this category . . . But those factors do not constitute the norm of Babylonian thinking" The entire book goes through the dating of various pieces of the myth and textual variants, and the dating of those bits and pieces. Two aspects of the work are entirely specific to the Enuma Elish and appear to follow an archetype written later than early textual variants. This indicated that before the Late Assyrian period the story as we know it had either just been completed or competed at its onset. The story achieved its highest popularity in the Late Assyrian period whereby Marduk was replaced by Asshur. "This conclusion is drawn from the mass of copies, which were written between 700 and 150 B.C., the earliest in Assyria. A few earlier scraps from Assyria occur, perhaps from about 900 B.C., but they are too small to do little more that prove the existence of the Epic at the time of their writing" Conclusion. No evidence of the formal epic in the Second millenium BCE only elements of the story, from these elements the author, a scribe for the priest of Murdok during the Late Assyrian period, began to develope the story. Between the late 10th century and early 9th century the story evolved to a certain recognizable form, during the late 8th century it was popularized. That is what I mean by late. Formally the epic comes from the kingdom of Asshur, what is called the Late Assyria period and not from Sumeria, which ceased to be governing political entity in the 18th century BCE. The language of the Sumerians began to fade in importance during the reign of Sargon the great 23c bce, and continued its declined under the semetic amorites and assyrians. By the time the epic was written the sumerian language was largely a written temple of priestly language, largely having died out in general use.

@@almazchati4178 All texts are fluid (both oral and written), but texts become more fixed, more stable once canonised.Just as biblical texts developed, so did the Qur'anic text and associated literature (sira, hadiths, etc). However, many sources used by proto-muslims were not included in the biblical canon, and many more were post-biblical. As for the _Book of Jubilees_ influencing the Qur'an and Islamic traditions, I suggest that the story of Jacob being given seven heavenly tablets by an angel to read was used by Muslims to construct the tradition of the _ah'ruf_ or Seven Readings of the Qur'an (in part, to attempt to explain all the variant readings that they were attempting to harmonise and standardise).

@@tuvoca825 I can't make any sense of what you are saying. Quran simply says there was a revelation to Moses, which has been hijacked by the scribes and rabbis. Jesus tried restoring it, and according to your tradition , he was killed for this crime. If you look at his sayings, he upholds the original law, and rejects some additions to it. Jubilees show how biblical narrative was evolving. Another source is the antiquities of Josephus, who was a rabbi/pharisee. I am sure that it will show quite some deviation from Biblical narrative. I think it shows that OT is not a monotheist text, very much like Gospels. Scholarly work simply corrobarates what Quran states.

the bible was being altered starting during the exile in babylon because the children of Israel rejected the religion and the God of the tanach and torah in favor of paganism and they substituted the talmud for the torah and only retained the torah for propaganda purposes. The book of jubilees was eliminated because it confirms the solar calendar of the book of enoch. and the talmudic jews abandoned the solar calendar because they worship saturn/remphan and changed their sabbath to saturday (saturn's day) in order to worship saturn/satan.

They had to constantly refine things. Error and corruption snuck in a lot. This was before printing presses and going back further was oral tradition only... but if you have prophets, you can fix things that are broken while the people progress. Without vision the people perish because conditions change and a static book alone is a tough way to go frought with issues as people interpret and misinterpret and if there are errors, omissions, modifications thay creep in... not all of them would always be wrong maybe though usually entropy seems to go toward disorder and messiness. It explains a lot.

It's basic laws for a wayward and roudy group that keep messing up. Like always, even today with us. A lower law but following the pattern that already existed. The ten commandments is a lower law. Look at the sermon on the mount... a higher law. Love your enemy. Do good to them that curse you. That stuff has to come after the idea of eye for an eye and the lower order. Some of these old books seem to be more concerned about the heirarchy of angels, but it isn't so relevant to what we need to know. But in city states with idols... it might tell them they aren't the top of the pecking order, even if it is just a hunk of wood they bow to. There's a learning curve. Especially today.

Ive never heard of the book of jubilees . What is it exactly? Was it written before or after the bible was supposedly written?
@bbl361
@bbl361 11 месяцев назад
It is Torah , written by Moses. Gal3-19 and Act 3-38 Say the law was given by the angels. Where ? At mount Sinaï, to Moses during the Exodus. And Jubilees gives the exact account of the angel receiving instructions to teach Moses the same Law Acts and Galatians talk about ! Jubilees, Exodus, Act and Galatians totally agreing on this. Jubilees going into more details than Genesis, why ? Because it's thé same author witnessing two times, a general and more detailed one. It was/is hidden because it exposes the paradigm of half truths and full lies set by the religious institutions claiming to represent the abrahamic faith : christianity - Judaism -Islam. It's Genesis with more details about all the works of creation, the times and seasons, the division of the earth among Noah's sons, and so much more. Whenever they say it contradicts Genesis or other scriptures, just know they either tempered with the translation first or they lack understanding. One little exemple : The general consensus is that the rivers out of Eden are localised in what we call the middle east : Jubilees gives minute details of where those rivers are situated and Euphrates and Tigris are just wrongly identified as some of the 5 rivers of Genesis, and that bad narrative is maintained through seminaries and jewish theology. Right out the first pages of Genesis, Jubilees exposes the inconsistent interprétations and cements Genesis, validating as a second witness the creation account. Now they get in peoples head trying to stop them from reading it for themselves, pointing out "incohérences", which is rather them showing their illeteracy. Test the book for yourself in conjunction with the other books and don't stop at what a so called scholar or any title carrying "authority" says, or any random youtube comment.

52:00 Is Job really supposed to be better than Abraham & Isaac? Sure, I see how they might think they were downplaying God's part in it, but according to the story he _was_ allowing it all to happen. And a _lot_ of people are killed in that story. I can see how nobody would have cared about the servants but what about Job's children?
@dianastevenson131
@dianastevenson131 2 года назад
Agreed - I've always had a problem with the fact that Job's wife and children are killed to test him, but it all comes right in the end because he gets a new wife and children. The story lays bare that the ethics of the Book of Job are about ownership - God owns human beings so it's OK for him to kill them. And wives amd children only exist ethically as the man's property - he loses them but it's OK because he gets some more. It's only about the effect on him. Don't the wife and children cry out to God from the ground, like Cain? If not why not? I hadn't remembered the servants so that shows my bias. It's like none of these people are real. Job is my least favourite book of the Bible.

Samaritan pentateuch, The Septuagint differences, and Philo of Alexandria are the things that come to mind in this conversation (textual flexibility and Helinistic influance). I don't think that the kind of criticisms of Torah found here in the book of jubilees are necessarily a result of Helinistic contact (outside pressures) but can be a result of internal development, like - once you have a generation that can look at all this stuff - Job starts to influence the reading of Genesis etc. I don't feel like this kind of stuff is written for an audience of people outside the tradition (Greeks). How is this text important, or used, in the Ethiopian Church?

I would encourage anyone who is watching this to read through Jubilees for yourself before just taking another persons opinion. Saying "the Author of Jubilees reads Genesis and rewrites it" is an assumption. It is not helpful to get people to read the book. You can say in your opinion the author read Genesis and then rewrites it. Stating it as fact if it is an opinion when you are an authority or can be seen as a authority in the field can be seen as disingenuous. You lose respect and credibility from people who have read and studied out the text. If we are being completely honest with ourselves, we can read the Masoretic texts and find many discrepancies there with the LXX. The Masoretic text was not the Original Hebrew, as you may well know. So who is to say that the account given in Jubilees and in Enoch (Which both follow the 364 day solar Calendar) is not accurate, and the modern day bible (The Old Testament of which is mainly translated from the Masoretic Texts) is? You mentioned that Jubilees claims that the Calandar in Genesis is wrong. Perhaps Jubilees Calendar is right and the Masoretic is wrong. In fact the LXX Translation agrees with the 364 Calendar. The problem lies that most people aren't able to read Greek, so when you read the Interlinear LXX words like month is translate as new moon. So most people assume the Calendar in the LXX and Masoretic are the same. Not the case. Even when reading the different accounts of the Last Supper (Passover) we see that 2 different calendars were being used at the time (Compare the events in John when he references the Pharisees Calendar vs Matthew were he is referencing the Calendar that they were using, The days do not align.)

I have deduced that the prophet Daniel probably relied on the Book of Jubilees and the teachings of Enoch, which were compiled around the 3rd or 2nd century BCE. The most probable reason for compiling Enoch and writing down the traditions contained in Jubilees - traditions that had probably been passed down orally for thousands of years - would have been to serve apologetic purposes in the face of the threat the Romans posed in their attempts to make observing the calendar of Enoch illegal. The "Book of Life" mentioned in Daniel 12 is first mentioned in tbe Book of Enoch. So both Daniel and Revelation are based on Enoch and the calendar it describes. I also figured out that the reference to 1335 days is intended to signify the year of the global flood as specified in the Book of Jubilees. "19. And he commanded Noah to build an ark for himself that he might save him from the water of the flood. 20. And Noah made an ark in every thing as he had commanded him in the [twenty-seventh] jubilee, in the fifth week, in the fifth year. 21. And he entered on the sixth [year] thereof, in the second month, in the new moon of the second month until the sixteenth thereof he entered and all that we brought to him into the ark, and the Lord locked it from without on the seventeenth, at eve. 22. And the Lord opened seven flood-gates of heaven and the mouths of the fountains of the great deep, seven mouths in number." (Jubilees 5:19-21, Schodde translation) (26 * 50) + (7 * 4) + 6 = 1334 So if Creation was in Year 1, then the Flood was from Years 1335-1336. I am sure that Daniel's first audiences would have known what that number represents, just as Americans would know what you are talking about if you mentioned 1776 or 1812. When hearing the mention of 1335, Daniel's contemporaries would ha e known that Daniel is prophesying of another event in which the righteous are preserved while the wicked are removed. I believe the count down for these 1335 days began on August 13, 2020, which is the day the Abraham Accords was announced by Trump. I thus believe that the abomination of desolation will occur on April 9-10, 2024. Interestingly, 45 days after August 13, 2020 will be September 27, 2020, which happens to be the date that all public religious worship was banned due to the fact Coronavirus lockdown on Israel began on Yom Kippur. So if we adopt the assumption that the "taking away" of the regular religious offerings prophesied by Daniel occurred on September 27, 2020, we can find that adding 1290 days to that date will result in the same date when I project there to be the prophesied "abominatiom of desolation". Interestingly, this is the date that is known as Radunitsa, which is referred to as "Easter for the Dead", a holiday celebrated by wven Jews in Belarus. This holiday celebrates "the inevitable power of death". I do not think it is fair to say that Jubilees or Enoch were altered. Rather, it seems that parts of rhe Bible that had been reliant on Enoch and Jublees were altered either before or after the period of captivity in Babylon and Assyria.

I hate to point out the obvious, but the premise of your title is totally unfounded. Finding a copy of Jubilees penned in the 1st century is only proof that scribes were recording copies or translations at that late date on the current media, not of original authorship. They could well have been working from much earlier copies or originals to supply new congregations or arm missionaries with, or simply replace what might have been decaying papyrus, for all we know. I'm really saddened to see so many so-called scholars motivated by partisanship or desire for notoriety to make controversial claims they can't back up with more than conjecture to score points against their perceived enemies in a spiritual battle where the adversary is just sitting back, watching the faithful of all faiths attack each other and drive more folks away from any religious faith and into the arms of nihilist atheism or new age pop pied pipers that sell one click subscriber salvation and easy enlightenment by profiteering from dark clouds of doubt.
