The Book Was Better: Percy Jackson Review 

My biggest problem with this movie is the disservice done to Hades's character. Of all the Greek gods, Hades is the least cruel and petty, and Riordan knew that and wrote him that way. The screenwriters on the other hand... "God of the Underworld? OMG TEH DEBIL!"

And yet ANOTHER misinterpretation of Greek mythology that makes Hades evil! Hades was probably the LEAST jackassish of the three chief Greek gods! Yet because he's the god of the dead, almost all modern interpretations keep making him evil! ARGH!

Persephone wasn't in the book, do you know why? Because it was summer, you know the story: Hades had a crush on her, blah blah blah, Zeus told Hades to let her go, but until Hades told Persephone that, she already ate a third of a pomegranate, so she had to stay, but Demeter was furious, so they decided that Persephone will stay in the underworld, but only for a third of the year, for the third she ate (that is winter) and for the rest of the year she could do what she wants (not winter). As far as I know, summer is NOT winter. If you make a movie about Greek mythology, at least make sure you know Greek mythology. SERIOUSLY.

You know what's the best thing? It's a SUMMER camp. It's WARM. They wear T-SHIRTS. Conclusion: It's summer. So WHY ON EARTH would Persephone be in the underworld when the whole point of the season thing is that she ist at OLYMPUS AT SUMMER????!!! I watched this movie one time and I was prepared for one hour of shouting things to Chris Columbus.

I like how the movie does NOTHING to introduce Percy's powers or even gives him any time to learn how to use them. In the book he started by using them completely unknowingly, like shooting the water out of the toilet. Throughout the course of the series he developed his power and learned how to control it. The movie, on the other hand, throws all that out the window and just says "NOPE, he can suddenly summon tsunamis and mould water into tridents and knows exactly how and that he is capable of doing so." Also, in the movie it is Persephone who made the pearls, she could just as easily give them an extra one to get Grover out of the underworld.

Fun fact: The author had nothing to do with the movie ;)

They minds well have just posted a sign that said "WE DON'T GIVE A CRAP ABOUT THE SOURCE MATERIAL!"

18:51 "cruel and abusive"? Idiot screenwriters had no idea that Hades and Persephone were the most loving and faithful to eachother married god couple! Hades literally only strayed twice and BOTH women got zapped by Persephone!

A few things I particularly hate about this movie are, well... A: How the movie decided to portray Percy dyslexia and, particularly, his ADHD... By literally telling us to our faces. In one of the most unnatural bits of dialoge I have ever seen in a movie( Something along the lines of, his mom asking "Hey Percy, how is your dyslexia going?" and Percy awnsering "Not good, especially with my ADHD getting on the way". ). See, the books had this bit of cleverness on which they were narrated by Percy perspective, and Percy would often comment on randon facts related to what is going on right now, such as the brand of underwear that the Minotaur was wearing( No, seriously ), that in my opinion was a great way to SHOW he had ADHD, because people with that disorder tend to focus surprisingly too much in small, insignificant details, as well as adding pretty much 90% of the comedy in the books by theirselves. Here, though, we are just told. And never shown. B: Grover characterization. See... Why did they had to make him into a Chris Rock wanna-be, exactly? His previous characterization as a lover-of-all-life was fine, and he was actually my favourite character. But then they went and... Do no black people take offense to Hollywood throwing that stereotype at us over and over again? And, on this case, taking a character that wasnt black, and making him black, SPECIFICALLY to use that stereotype?( By the way, I dont actually dislike Grover being black, only the stereotype they threw in. ) C: And why did they completely took Chronos, as well as Ares, from the first film? ... And also, would bring back Chronos on the secound film... Only to ruin him?

in the book the gods couldnt touch each others godly objects? and Hades and Persephone easily handle Zues' lightning bolt

Yeah, I especially hate the fact that they combined Annabeth and Clarisse... They're two very different people.

Actually this movie just got me thinking: If luke wanted percy and the crew to perish in the underworld... Then WHY, WOULD HE TELL THEM ABOUT THE PEARLS?! If he wanted to make sure if they would never return, why tell them about a get out a jail free card like them? If not that then why not make a passing comment about the food there being so good and trick them into staying in the underworld? THIS IS SO STUPID!

Ok, the thing that always drives me nuts is Luke playing call of duty... Demi - Gods aren't supposed to have electronics! It alerts the monsters! It's like Luke is beg- oh... wait... It still drives me nuts...

nobody with adhd has ever said “im a loser, *i have adhd*” in the books, there was at least nuance. in the movie, the screenwriters massively misunderstood percy’s self esteem issues, which undermines literally everything.

The thing I hated most in this movie was the portrayal of Hades and the Underworld itself. It's been a while since I've read the books, but I remember Hades being more cold and indifferent rather then inherently evil. He took his vows seriously and almost never went back on them. He's essentially stuck running a world he wants no part of, yet he still does his job because it's his duty and if he doesn't do it then the living world will erupt into anarchy. He has to take care of the dead. All of them. No exceptions. Hell, I like him more then the other gods in future books because he tends to be a lot nicer to... certain people... then the other gods. Even if I don't particularly like the people he's nice to, it's still a decent gesture. The Hades here is just.... no. Just no. The Underworld in the movie is portrayed analogous to Hell, when in the book it's a bit more like Purgatory with some elements of Heaven and Hell in between. The denizens don't know that though, and so they see what afterlife they wish to see. It was an interesting concept and one that I liked a lot in the book.

I know how trivial this is but... Where in the holy hell is Clarisse? Why isn't Annabeth blond? Where in the fuck is Ares? Why does Hades want war? Where is Dionysus? What the hell did they do to the Lotus Casio? Why are these kids, who are supposed to be 12, 16+? Why are the gods wearing godly armor when they should be in more "human" clothing? Why is there no Pinochle? Why is the Hermes cabin to crammed full of kids? Why do they never go over Percy's isolation? Why is there no mist to cover of the mythical BS going on? I could go on, but nah. I've pointlessly ranted enough.

On it's own, I would give the movie a 7/10 rating. It was good overall, a mediocre action/fantasy. For an adaptation, I would give it 1/10 for the same names.

Percy Jackson is the type of movie you can actually somewhat enjoy, unless you read the book and then everything pisses you off about the movie.

Ancient Greek scholars: Hades and Persephone have a beautiful, consensual relationship where despite a rocky start by kidnapping they eventually fall in love, him putting her happiness and the wellbeing of earth before his own loneliness and is easily one the most stable relationships in ancient greek lore. If you believe in alternate universes, just know, that there's a universe where the Percy Jackson movies aren't a disappointment

Aphrodite isn't Zeus' kid. Her actual origin is much weirder than being someone's child.

I actually started reading this series right when this movie came out (which is weird since I am a huge fan of Greek mythology), so I had only read the first couple of chapters when my sister took me too see it. I thought it wasn't too bad...until I finished the book. Oh...what can I say? After Riordan did so well to get every Greek myth right, this movie frigged it up. Hydras don't breathe fire, they breathe poisonous gas. Poseidon was absent for most of the book, creating Percy's internal dilemma of wondering if his dad even liked him. Biggest complaint? This is based on the first book in a series. Ergo, this movie should be the first in a series. If the books have a plot point that is mentioned in all of them (the frigging PROPHECY!) it needs to be addressed, because it's going to pop up in the other books, and it might be important!!! (Eragon also did this with simplifying Angela's fortune telling, but I'm not going to get into that because I will pop a blood vessel in my head. That movie RUINED my favorite character!) Okay, sorry, I just love this book series so much. It pains me how badly the movie ruined it. You should review Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters, it's just as bad. Last thing, love your show, I have been marathoning it all day.

All I want is Netflix to take Percy Jackson on and make a show.

I just noticed something that you missed +KrimsonRogue. During the final fight scene, we see Percy blocking the shots from the Master Bolt when it was clearly stated by Chiron in the book that the Master Bolt contained enough power to make the humans hydrogen bombs look like firecrackers.

Poseidon is supposed to wear a Hawaiian shirt and I always imagined him looking like one of those guys in their 40s that still say stuff like “ super chill dude😏” and “all about the waves dude😎🏄🏻” and the movies make him look like this magestic serious person, my boy Poseidon is supposed to be the brother that would be in school and be like “forget homework!!! Imma go hang with some chicks at Apollo’s house party tonight” at least that’s how I imagined his personality would be.

I give this movie 3 out of 5 Stars. like you said. The set was great. The Acting was Good. They just need a better screen writer. Hope Sea of Monster can fix it. (After Watching Sea of Monster.) And they ruin my favorite book in the seires. Thank Hollywood.

Hi. I'm a fangirl. I need to get this off my chest: I cannot STAND how those stupid movie producers left out Percy's Claiming AND the "You drool when you sleep." Line and scenario. AAAUUUHHGG!!!!!!!!!!!! X:(

They also severely nerfed the master bolt. Also great review. This is one of the few channels that say how the book is different from the movie and why it's makes it not work. Though I kind of wish you went into more book/movie comparisons like removing the movie removing the entire "greek gods don't see their kids very often out of choice" and instead pinning it all on a law Zeus made. This removes a lot of the anger the demigods would have with the gods. All the movie doesn't show the sad child neglect in their world like monsters seeking out half bloods to kill and eat at early ages. I'm also surprised that you didn't point out that they Christianized the Underworld.

The reason Percy got this own cabin the book was because, since Zeus, Posiden, and Hades' kids were so powerful, they technically weren't allowed to sire anymore heroes, which made the Big-3 heroes rare.

Personally, I liked the switch to the Parthenon over the book's Gateway Arch. That is the one and only thing I liked about the movie. (Well, that and the change in Grover you mentioned.) The word "butchered" gets tossed around a lot in book/movie comparisons, but it definitely applies here. The book was so much better it is unreal.

If it were possible, I would like this video a thousand times. THANK. YOU. God, my brother and I loved this book series, and for a while we were reading it together. So for his birthday, which was around when this movie came out, we went to see the movie together, thinking we would have a blast. And because it sucked, we wasted our time. But it's reviews like this that make me feel vindicated.

Ares was one of the main characters and felt like an actual danger to anyone that came close to the guy.

i love ( in the meaning that i truly hate with all my heart ) the fact that annabeth met percy, exchanged two or three phrases with him and on the SAME DAY was like "i love or hate you"

The struggles Percy went through were nonexistient in the movie. Also there was time that went by before Percy went on his first quest. During that time it is critical in the books because it set up Percy seeing the camp as the home and place he always wanted to be. He made key friendships, like Luke, and actually learned how to fight. The directors seriously didn't read the books. There is no way someone reading those books could call this an adaptation of those masterpieces of storytelling.

Apparently the director for the first film never read the book while the director of the second film did. For some reason, this one is closer despite the DIRECTOR never reading it! And I feel the same way with the film series. Espcially with the second film as my friends know how much I hate it!!

One thing that i just noticed while watching this is how Luke has an ENTIRE HOME THEATOR SYSTEM AND MULTIPLE TVS IN HIS ROOM. In the book series, oh um SPOILER ALERT so people don't kill me, one of the reasons that Luke was able to raise Chronos (or Kronos or I've seen it spelt either way) was that the gods ignored their children and because those children weren't claimed they were left stuck in the absolutely packed Hermes cabin growing ever more resentful, and those conditions led to many of the unclaimed half-bloods fighting the gods, a MAJOR plot point in the later books. the fact that Luke had a decked out room in the movie is a complete disregard to a major part of the final book when Percy was able to convince the gods of their own foolishness for ignoring their kids. Oh and i don't blame KrimsonRogue for not picking up on that plot point in the books as i only now realised it even after having read the books so many times and watching this video twice cause I'm insane like that and because i enjoy this show.

Right at the beginning I noticed that the movie just got ride of the most important part, that most that mortals cant see through at all. Unless you're Sally Jackson, Rachel, or Luke's mother.

This was wonderfully angry haha I saw the movie first so when I read the book I was confused and then angry that the movie didn't just cut out a few things (like in Harry Potter) but really changed the entire plot. I just didn't understand how they could do that. However, I will say that I honestly liked the casting choices for pretty much everyone.

The worst parts with the gods and monsters bits could of been all solved if they only explained the concept of the mist. Damn, such an easy thing to fix and explain, yet they never do! ug -_-

This is the worst movie ever conceived. Well...second. The first being the sequel. This movie raped me and my childhood so hard that I'm still feeling it. Nothing in this movie works. The books are some of the most creative I've ever read (and don't go into the whole "it rips off harry potter" rant because harry potter itself is a rip off. See the worst witch and troll). You mix a boring and uninteresting movie (by itself) with the fact that this movie went out of its way to middle finger the books fans by being as disloyal and inaccurate as possible. When you make michael bay movies look good, you are destroying everything the world holds dear. Think of it like this, image if I took a spiritual song or movie moment or childhood memory that you hold close to you, and then throw in goofy Nigel thornberry pictures, farting, and many other inappropriate things along the way. You'd be pissed. Welcome to my world. This movie is the destroyer of everything good that has ever existed, and the second one does it all even more horribly. I hate this movie!!!!!!! This and the sequel are worse than batman and robin, the garbage pail kids, plan 9 from outer space, north, manos the hands of fate, troll 2, highlander 2, battlefield earth, showgirls, the master of disguise, freddie got fingered, the room, gigli, alone in the dark, catwoman, the last airbender, birdemic, jack and jill, the love guru, food fight, the mario movie, son of the mask, haunted mansion, glitter, biodome, home on the range, all four transformers movies, the star wars prequels, all five twilight movies, any of the scary movie satire comedy movies (epic movie, disaster movie, etc), both animated titanic movies, all the baby geniuses movies, anything else by michael bay, anything else by uwe bowl, almost anything else by m night shyamylan, and a million other gosh awful movies that I can't think of off the top of my head all put into a blender and mixed with michael more's diarrhea. Yes...that bad. If you knew the books you'd agree. But if you still persist that anything in these atrocious movies are good...then you are the reason that the bar is so low. One day I'll make a harry potter remake and have it as disloyal as possible so that you can have some kind of grasp of the pain I feel.

The point in the movie you reach at 10:59? That's when I walked out on the movie. I had read the book in prep (if an adaptation is good, it'll be different, but reading the book ahead of time should only enhance the experience) and that's where I was just done.

What if Percy was a woman? Well, Poseidon DOES have daughters...

You know, I complained about this movie when I was a teenager and called it a disservice to the books and all my friends and classmates who were aware of the material told me I was wrong and that the movie was just as good as the book or even better and I started to wonder if I was insane for disliking it. Its nice to know I was not and was just surrounded by people who couldn't see the problems I had with it.

I love your opinion. I'll be honest I did watch the movie before reading the book cause I had no idea that the books existed til someone told me. But after reading the books I saw all the amazing story telling just changed for the most basic of basic and it made me sad. But like you said if you havent read the book the movie might look really good to you. And thx for the entertaining video.

Logan Lerman himself HATED the Percy Jackson movies for how unfaithful they were to the books, and so did the book's author. And, after Disney's acquisition of Fox, they both petitioned Disney to make a more faithful adaptation of the series, which now, as you already know, they succeeded, and put Rick in charge of the screenplay and casting.

One thing I don't see people mention, but is a big deal in the story as well: Why is Percys last fight in the sky? Zeus's domain? Even in the book it talks about Percy spending anytime in the air is an offense to Zeus! But in the final fight he's just zipping around!

Those movies are abominations, it’s like the director and producers purposely decided to go against the books and mythology. I get that no movie adaptation is gonna be 100% loyal to the books and that they have cut certain characters and scenes out...but holy fuck they got rid of or heavily altered like 95% of the books. They could’ve had the next Harry Potter series and they had butter fingers!
