The dogs weren't made from the corpses of the dead tributes. They were just genetically modified to look like them. I remember being very disappointed that the writer didn't have the guts to stick to that idea. In general I wish she had just went with it and done more stuff like that.

Yeah that part did confuse me in the book trying to figure out if the dead bodies they took were transformed or if they were separate. But genetic manipulation becomes a key plot point in later books

@@shadowofthesilver I believe in the third book there was a quick line about it, *Spoilers For Mockingjay * As the Lizards-creatures are chasing them through the sewers, when they hiss, it sounds like they say 'Katniss' like there targeting her specifically. Katniss's inner monologue says that she recognises Snow is built them that way to mess with her head, similar to the dogs in the first book. There may have been some confusion there because in the first book, she genuinely thought the dogs were made from the previous tributes.

Right? I went to see this in theaters with my mom when it came out and was disappointed. Partially because it was to dark to see the fully rendered dogs, but because they were supposed to be similar to their corresponding tribute in terms of the color of their eyes and fur

@jazzybree4239
@jazzybree4239 5 лет назад
In the book, Peeta was also a painter. It's glossed over in Katniss' "you're right, I can't do this" speech in the last movie. So, that might be where his skills come from. Also, he has rather humble characteristics, so playing it off as 'just cake decorating, no biggie!" Makes a ton of sense.
@juliannagk9079

The movies glossed over a lot of stuff that people don’t realize. The story behind the mockingjay pin being the biggest, in my eyes. The old woman’s story was so beautiful, I wish it was part of the movie so badly.
@Skye_Writer
@Skye_Writer 3 года назад
Additionally, there are all kinds of cake decorating, from using lots of frosting to create shapes when squeezed out of a bag to *painting the designs on to a fondant base using brushes and food coloring.* No, "decorating cakes" is not the same as "camouflage," but it's basically Peeta's shorthanded way of saying he is an artist...something we don't get a better idea of until book 2. It might be that he doesn't consider himself an "artist" because he doesn't use paints or colored pencils or markers or whatever--supplies he cannot get really, because luxury items like that are only obtainable by people with more money and idle time on their hands, and while Peeta's family is better off than Katniss's, they are still working class and money is still an issue (his mother struck him in the head for burning a couple of loaves of bread which made them now unsellable). Btw, Krim, while many people in District 12 ARE poor, there are government officials stationed in the district who have more money to spend, and then there are families like the mayor's, whose daughter gave Katniss the mockingjay pin in the book, who are much better off and have money to spend on "fancy" things like decorated cakes. Additionally, even poor people TRY to get things like decorated cakes for special occasions even if they have to save up for it. It was never supposed to be that everyone in 12 is starving or on the edge of starvation. Katniss' family was in a particularly vulnerable situation because her father was dead and her mother fell apart after the fact. Without the breadwinner in the family who worked in the mines and brought home money, the Everdeens were in a bad situation. The only means they had of making money were selling the cheese made from the goat's milk of Prim's goat, and whatever trade Katniss could get for the small game she illegally hunted. The family's situation really comes down to Mrs. Everdeen seeming to be unable to cope with her husband's death. While it's never explicitly stated since the books are from Kat's POV and she has obvious resentment towards her mother for not taking care of the family, it is at least heavily implied that Mrs. Everdeen fell into a deep depression. There is a lot you have to glean from between the lines in the series, and there is a lot that isn't known about Kat's mom. But what we do learn is that she was a merchant's daughter and learned her healing arts in the apothecary they owned. Peeta's father was in love with her at one time, but she "ran off with a coal miner." The term "ran off" makes it seem as though she married against her parents' wishes, and being that we are told District 12 is in the part of Panem that used to be Appalachia, we can assume that old Southern values and traditions still are a big deal there and marrying against your family's wishes can get you expelled from the family. Since Mrs. Everdeen is still young enough that her parents could and likely should still be alive, the fact that they are not helping to make sure their granddaughters aren't starving suggests that either they have fallen on hard times, too, or they are no longer speaking to their daughter and no longer acknowledge her. Either way, it appears she had no support system/family to count on for help once her husband was dead, and fell to pieces because she did not know how or was incapable of supporting her daughters. Gale's family, likewise, was in a bad situation because he, too had lost his father in the mines, and he had three younger siblings to help support from the age of 14. He would not be allowed to work in the mines until he got out of school, so that is why his family was living in poverty too. And no, half-starving coal miners do not dig coal out any better, but the history has always shown that coal-mining families live on the edge of the poverty line. They are well enough off as long as the miner in the family is strong enough and healthy enough to keep doing the work, but medical expenses eat into their salaries in a big way, and if they are ever injured, killed, or even just fired from their jobs, the family is in dire straits VERY quickly. Coal mining towns don't tend to invest in many other businesses, so without the mining job, there is no other way to bring in money. That's how the mining company keeps them dependent and under their thumbs.

Krimson, starving people do not produce as much coal, but the more brutally they are treated, the less likely they will rise up. That's what happened with slavery, and that's what happens in the Hunger Games.
@silverbrumbyfan
@silverbrumbyfan 6 лет назад
The way I see it the miners and their families would be sort of taken care for by the capital, I'm not saying they'd live like kings just enough to survive and keep them semi fit so that they could continue working and get as many people in the mines as possible. When Katniss' father died they lost that small bit of protection (Gale's father was killed too in the accident), I'm not entirely sure but I haven't found any evidence that suggests women or under 18s can be miners too in the book. So if their father hadn't died Katniss probably wouldn't need to rely on her hunting skills so much. Basically it means if you or someone in your family isn't down in the mines you're going to starve

It's also similar to how Coal operator exploited and kept Miners and their families in abject poverty until the West Virginia Coal wars.
@chethanchandra3665

True, the miners are getting paid, so the comparison to slavery was inappropriate, but the miners are barely paid enough. (also they don't really starve because they bribe peacekeepers.) Subjugating people, I agree with Krimson, would be pretty stupid, if it weren't for the Hunger Games, which are supposed to deter revolution.

I remember the first book the most, so I won’t speak on the other two, but the book was way more graphic than the movie. The one that sticks in my mind the most is the tracker jacker part From the book: [In reference to Glimmer] “This girl, so breathtakingly beautiful in her golden dress the night of the interviews, is unrecognizable. Her features eradicated, her limbs three times their normal size. The stinger lumps have begun to explode, spewing putrid green liquid around her. I have to break several of what used to be her fingers with a stone to free the bow. The sheath of arrows is pinned under her back. I try to roll over her body by pulling on one arm, but the flesh disintegrates in my hands and I fall back on the ground.” [Skipped the paragraph after that one] “ ‘Do this!’ I command myself. Clenching my jaw, I dig my hands under Glimmer’s body, get a hold on what must be her rib cage, and force her onto her stomach... I tug on the silver sheath of arrows, but it’s caught on something, her shoulder blade, something, and finally yank it free.” [Careers come back to the site] “But it’s too late to run. I pull a slimy arrow from the sheath and try to position it on the bow string but instead of one string I see three and the stench from the stings is so repulsive I can’t do it(x3).” (p. 192-193) Even though it’s just a hallucination, it’s still pretty nasty ngl. And yes, I did pull out my copy just to respond to this. Thankfully voice to text exists so I didn’t have to type all that

Sure they are tied to each other for their whole lives but it's through hardship and war and manipulation and a necessaty in the beginning of the books. In the end Katniss is a broken woman that has lost everyone she loved and became an outcast of society and Peeta was by her side as he always was .... Okay I know this discussion is long over at this point but I have to bring it up somewhere because it annoys me every time I hear that critique point AND I have never really seen anyone countering it before so here: Firstly: District 12 may be the poorest district overall but not everyone in District 12 is poor! There is a clear divide between people from town and people from the Seam. People from the Seam are the ones we see most of which is why people think that's all there is to District 12. THEY are the poorest of the poor, who are at the brink of starvation everday. The merchant families in town however actually earn more money, have overall more secure lives and don't have to sign up for tesserae. Which brings us to point 2: Yes people in the Seem most definetely can't afford the fancily decorated cakes from the Mellark bakery, but a lot of people in town can. And thirdly: I don't get why it's so hard to believe that Peeta is good at camouflage because he decorates the cakes!! Peeta is artistically gifted! He can paint! Why is it so hard to believe that he can remodel a tree he sees directly in front of him (especially with the kind of professional material they had in the training area) if that is literally the same thing he does with the cakes? Okay I'm done xD. But gosh that annoys me every time lol. There are most definetely some eyebrow raising moments in the series every now and then and some way heavier critique points to be made about the plot (*cough cough* looking at you Mockingjay ┬┴| (・_|┬┴), but this is really not such a big deal or so incredibly unbelievable as people make it out to be xD

I always interpreted the reason the people were kept on the brink of starvation, was because children eligible for the hunger games would be able to receive rations to feed the families, the catch being the more rations you take the more times your name is placed in the reaping pool. District 12 is also so poor because coal isn't seen as essential to the capitol, so they don't treat them well. Districts like 1 and 2 are better off due to what they provide for the capitol. District 1 producing luxury items, and District 2 providing the vast majority of peacekeepers for Panem.

Oh how prophetic Caesar's words were to Peeta...."You go out there and you win this thing and when you get home. she'll HAVE to go out with you." Because of their refusing to submit to the Capital's little mind game, that's exactly what happened. lol. @@UnknownUnknown-mo7zg Its funny....in the end, when they went back to District 12 together at the end of Mockingjay and they were alone....no Effie, no President Snow dictating their every move, no threat of death.....I felt like the love between Katniss and Peeta was very genuine. They had both LITERALLY been through hell in the Games....twice....and survived. Katniss lost her little sister....she essentially lost Gale and her Mom as well....she was alone. Peeta was brainwashed by President Snow. He didn't know what was real and what was warped. And in the end, when Katniss thought she was alone, he found her again. I felt like when they were lying together in bed and he asked her "Do you love me, real or not real?" and she said "real", she meant it this time. It wasn't just part of a game. I think in that moment, all the walls that she had carefully built around her heart came tumbling down and she let herself truly love him.....and trust him. Remember she said at the beginning of her journey that she would never have children.....she had children with Peeta.
@UnknownUnknown-mo7zg
@UnknownUnknown-mo7zg 5 лет назад
@@CeltycSparrow Yeah, but the start of their relationship is just too 'ick'. It's comparable to a forced marriage ( Well it WAS a forced marriage.) which shouldn't have happened in the first place. I don't care what the end result is ( And yes I met my soon to be exhusband while we were deployed so I know how the bond feels.), it's just a couple I can't ship because of their origins. Origins are very important to me when it comes to consent and marriage. Tainted fruit ruins the dessert regardless how sweet the fruit is.
@Scheherazade-pr4jt
@Scheherazade-pr4jt 5 лет назад
@@UnknownUnknown-mo7zg The thing is, though, that she was never forced or coerced into a relationship with him. She was coerced into a PRETENCE of a relationship with him. Yeah, that still is unfair because she wasn't really left with a choice as Haymitch and Peeta decided this without consulting her and after that televised interview, she couldn't really undo it without seriously hurting her public image and thus her chances of survival. But for me, that aspect of it really made me enjoy the complexity of their relationship. It's not like Katniss had to do anything like have sex with him even though she didn't want to. She just had to act lovey dovey with him for the cameras. I enjoyed how their interactions kept you constantly guessing. For the longest time, you're never quite sure how much of their relationship is real or indeed when any of it becomes real. I think as mentioned in the review, this is where the book has the advantage. Being told from Katniss's first person perspective means you get to see directly into her head and all her different developing feelings. Even though she herself doesn't realise it or admit it for the longest time, the reader can see how even as she continues the pretence, she is developing genuine feelings for Peeta. This becomes especially evident as the love triangle with Gale becomes more pronounced and you get to compare her relationship and interactions with him against hers with Peeta. Although Peeta's motivations are rather mysterious at the start of the series, his love for her becomes pretty obvious later when we see the lengths he'll go to to protect Katniss. So I don't think it's fair to compare their relationship to a forced marriage. I come from a culture where arranged marriages (not forced mind you just arranged) are common and you don't get to really know your partner until after marriage. Peeta and Katniss aren't comparable to that. Despite how their relationship began, they still got to know each other, suffer together and overcome hardship together and develop a genuine bond. At the end of Mockingjay, they're no longer under surveillance and threat from the capitol. They're free to cut ties and yet they don't. They choose to stay together and get married. There's nothing forced about it

I would like to point out that Vampire Diaries is NOT a rip off of Twilight, the first set of the series was published in 1991-1992. The show began in 2009, 2 years after Twilight, the book, and 1 year after the film. Sure they decided to bring it out then because Twilight revived the vampire trend but in a way Twilight is a rip off of Vampire Diaries since both books have a love triangle where the girl ends up going with the 'bad boy'. I use that term loosely since Edward isn't exactly bad but Jacob is clearly the safer option Now usually I prefer the books to the show or film but I tried to get through the first series of Vampire Diaries after the show was announced but my god they're bad, the writing is terrible and the characters are fucking awful. People who think Elena is annoying in the show they're lucky they didn't use the book version because she would be absolutely insufferable. Its a shame because I like L J Smith's other books but Vampire Diaries is an absolute waste of time
@Myrcella_Rykker
@Myrcella_Rykker 6 лет назад
silverbrumbyfan I left the same comment that vampire diaries came first. But in the 90's when I read them as 12 year old I thought they were awesome and reread them multiple times. They have a special place in my heart. They changed up a lot in the TV series, but I'm so glad they were true to the character of Damon. From the first scene he is in he owned and embodied that characters danger, and flipant manner. If you knew the back story from the books you could see how he was following thru with making Stefan suffer, but still falling short of killing him, not really out of brotherly love but he must live to suffer more
@silverbrumbyfan
@silverbrumbyfan 6 лет назад
I will admit I liked the first 2 books when I first read them but after that it got really weird, like when Elena died she came back as this weird angel thing and then you had the kitsunes (a creature I really wish they had in the show) and Caroline having Tylers pups Damon was the only character I liked in the books especially that moment where he throws Matt onto the roof of a car for holding a stick near him
@Myrcella_Rykker
@Myrcella_Rykker 6 лет назад
silverbrumbyfan I know the auther wrote more books deacades after the first ones, and when I read the summary and and exerpt from the book it did seem off and wierd and haven't read them. But the first trilogy from the 90's The Awakening, The Struggle, The Fury were good. And the extra book The Reunion with Elena dead but trying to reach out was good. In the end the Powers that be gave her back as a reward, and I always thought that it was as human. That was the end of the seiries for decades. Than Vap Diaries airs and becomes huge so L.J Smith starts writing in that universe and I'm like what are you doing to Elana? Angel? What? No! So the first four are Cannon to me and the newer where she 'jumped the shark' are fanfic by an author that didn't reread her original work before writing more

The Vampire Diaries was decades before your hated Twilight. Do your research Crimson. It was a book series that was written in the mid 90's by L.J Smith that had a complete 3 book story arch, and was so popular she rewarded her readers with a fourth book that had a stand alone story. I'm no archery expert, but she shouldn't have just let the arrow loose like that after Gale startled her, she has to make those herself and lost arrows are no joke when a lost arrow means hard work replacing it. Most people I know in similar situations (working VERY hard round the clock) have to make EVERY minute of their day count and would at least feel frustrated at the extra time spent making more arrows when there are a million other things they could be doing. It's the kind of life where you go to bed at night with still a million other things you COULD have done, (even if everything else went perfectly) because there just arent enough minutes in the day Also, she has the bow drawn for way too long before firing, the average hunting bow has around 50 pounds of force, at most you will have that sucker drawn back for a max of ten seconds. The Templin Institute made an excellent video on how stupid the Capital is. Not only does the Hunger Games themselves only serve to foster resentment and rebellion, but the district system means that they ignore a lot of resources. Even if it is as Diane claims, that f.eks 12 produce mainly coal, but also other similar resources, it's still made clear that the districts only produce one type of resources each. Which is a horrible way to treat natural resources. The California district, as they used for an example, produce fish. Meaning that they ignore the countless other natural resources that made California one of the best economies in the world.

The thing with the dogs always disappointed me about the movie. I feel like the fact that they looked like the dead tributes is immeasurably important. Also more of a dumb thing, but I feel like the tracker jacker scene was insanely lacking in the movie. One of the things that will forever stick in my head is just how gross and shocking it was in the book. I haven’t read the book in a while, but I still remember it pretty well. Also from the dvd extras, they talk about how Effie wears such restrictive clothes to punish herself for going along with the death of these kids. Have fun with that sad fact!

The one thing that never made sense to me... was that the capital used *teenagers* for the Hunger Games. I get the idea of modern gladiators chosen at random, but why *kids?* They can't fight! Just look at Rut and Prim, they have no chance - how is watching children helplessly die entertaining? Even psychos want to see a challenge. Shouldn't they use people from eighteen to twenty five at least?

Well, if *no one* can fight, then it's still a challenge, or not.

1. Children make for great underdogs. 2. There usually aren't many children in the games to beginn with, since most children will only have their name in there once. 3. As a grim reminder that the capitol holds the district's future in their hands

Liked the video, The only thing I really didn't like was all the crap skits, They weren't funny at all and just cringe all the time, Just overall just horrible (so called jokes), I just don't like when some youtubers thinks it's so funny putting non-stop "so called jokes" in their videos, Just makes the video kinda bad.

lmao you being like "the capitol is stupid" for profiting off district 12s labour without providing them with enough money to adequately feed and house themselves...like that doesn't happen in real life

I needed this. Krimson you are creeping me out lol. Every time I have a rough day or even the opposite and it’s a cool day with a nice breeze and I have a coffee but nothing to watch and I feel like just sitting down, you always upload. It’s starting to get freaky 😂😂 thanks for the episode! I love your channel to death.

Actually the economy does work it is called mercantilism which is the system by which colonies( in this case districts) give raw material back to the mother country ( in this case the capital). Then the capital gives them protection for it and maybe finished goods.

My understanding was that Katness's family was poverty level even for her own district, since none of her family work directly for the mines (I don't remember what if any job her mom has). Leaving them as having to make a living by supporting miners mostly by Katniss's poaching and selling extra meat a miner's salary wouldn't normally allow. Regardless Hunger games had more to it than a certain "Divergent" YA series...

Okay Krimson, CGP Grey made two videos on power structures and I feel like they would be very useful to look through before deciding whether or not the system is stupid. Is it cruel? Yes. But that is how things are done in many dictatorships.

Why didn’t you point out that Prim isn’t supposed to give her the pin? It’s a random friend from childhood who is like the governors daughter or something. The movie didn’t bring her in because she didn’t become important to the book series until book 3, and I’m not sure they thought they’d get that far

@@KrimsonRogue I don't think so but it is an enjoyable movie and it does feels like a book story. also, Jennifer Lawrence is way hotter in there than she is here, that is how I heard of Passengers. the main problem I have with the movie is the point of view, but this is just me.

Aw, Diane, Gale was trying to be strong for Katniss, to be reassuring and not make her more afraid than he KNEW she already was.
