A book is indeed far better... Something about holding a book and smelling the paper, the feel of the pages. Reading on my tablet makes me lose interest in the story.

Have to admit I use both actual books & digital, digital mainly for convenience on daily commute or holidays - I read so much/so fast half my suitcase would be books not clothes! BUT I prefer physical books where possible, it engages more of your senses = happy weekend & evenings. I also like collecting books & have some I've kept for 20+ years, but to TRY to keep a limit on it, I use my local library - or I did prior to covid-19 lockdown. 😰

If someone chooses the Bible to save their life or any other book for that matter, it is none of your business. Nor does it give you any right to bring them down for it. Just because someone has been rude to you about your choices does not mean you need to stoop down to their level as well.

Books totally distort my sense of money. What am I supposed to do when a ten dollar book can bring more joy than every house and car I’ve ever owned? And knowing this, how can anyone expect any sane person to not spend every bit of spare money they have on books?

I believe the one thing that makes a city look really alive is the presence of bookstores. I’m from India and have never been abroad. But, I find the surrounding places of the one second hand bookstore in my city the most vibrant part of the city..just buzzing with life and showing it’s essence. What makes New York the greatest and liveliest city in the world, I presume, is the presence of prolific bookstores such as Strand that have created a place in history for themselves.
@prufrockj.a8532
@prufrockj.a8532 3 года назад
I decided to go to every bookstore in my city the first year I started university. I hadn't explored the city by myself up until that point so it felt like one of the first steps towards independence. I searched all the main streets and once they were all covered I moved on to the smaller bookshops that were tucked in various laneways. Fast-forward 5 years and a home library later and I now know Melbourne like the back of my hand. Because of the bookstores. By finding them, I didn't simply discover some of the best books ever written - I also discovered my city.
@user-cb7xt2gs7g
@user-cb7xt2gs7g 3 года назад
Oh my gosh, I'm from Melbourne too and I've been meaning to visit all the bookstores as a way of discovering the city, but apart from Readings (Carlton) and Dymocks, I've yet explored the other stores. Do you have any bookstores that you would recommend visiting in particular?
@prufrockj.a8532
@prufrockj.a8532 3 года назад
@@user-cb7xt2gs7g Yes! There are a few that are truly great. My favourite is City Basement Books on Flinders St. I've found quite a lot of old second-hand books there, some over a 100 years old! Hill of Content is great (if a little expensive), and Robinsons Bookshop (Emporium) has such a nice decor. The Kay Craddock Antiquarian Bookseller is a really fancy store with some lovely antique books and The Haunted Bookstore is a great one for the fantasy/paranormal genre. The various Book Grocers scattered across the city also have some great options for low prices. But my favourite has to be the Dymocks on Collins St. It's so big but has such a nice cozy vibe and a great selection.
@user-cb7xt2gs7g

@@prufrockj.a8532 Oh yes I agree, Dymocks is an amazing store. Thanks for the recommendations, once the restrictions are lifted, I'll have to check these all out :)

I live in NYC and the people who live and commute here always crowd the bookstores. With the pandemic I think people like me and many others are scared that many more will disappear. They are fun to walk into and just browse what is out there because online curation of books is mainly rubbish. Amazon only prioritizes the "bestsellers" but that comes with no real insight from someone or a few people that know that genre or why they are putting there on the front page. It also means that even good books could get pushed to the bottom of the page as they won't have enough name recognition or enough marketing. To find a decent book is word of mouth and someone who knows what they are talking about. ITs also just nice to walk into a store then be online all the time.
@michellekaiser5907
@michellekaiser5907 4 года назад
Honestly, I'm trying to read MORE given the pandemic and I'm ordering more from the local shop. I just need them to come up with more ways for me to interact with them. If they have a good idea, I'll be "there".

These are a few things which my generation (after 1980) can still relate to and will be hard for the future generations. Playing with friends on the field not video games, the smell of fresh books before the school started, going to library to refer things and make projects, phone conversations were limited to a few and not that often, socialising ment actually going out well dressed and meeting friends and having a conversation rather than on apps, I always wondered did technology bring us closer or did we drown in it .....
@idontevenknow9758

Snicker Bars I’m also a millennial and we still do things together as a friend group. I think it’s a balance we have to create of being online and using the tools to the benefit as in this pandemic it has made is much easier for my friends and I to stay connected and talk. But on the other hand it’s still isolating when you only talk online. You have to balance both to make it work.

I have always been a fan of paper books. Something about the smell and feel of opening a book for the first time to uncover the hidden gems on the page. I love to dog ear the corners of the page of my favorite chapters or parts in the book, so I can return to those parts later and relive the journey of the book again. True, the E-readers are nice and convenient but something is different about holding a book. I liked when I was in college and would put colorful tabs on pages of references and highlighting things I wanted to remember later in my textbooks. I still enjoy walking into libraries or book stores to find something new to read.

Oddly most other industries say the internet saved them. Instead of depending on the immediate area to buy their products, they can reach the entire world. People who would otherwise never even step into their cities have just as must access as those who live down the street of the shop.

Anytime I travel I must find local bookstores. The Indie-er, the better. I went to NYC for the first time in 30 years this year, and my only requirement was the Strand. I could barely walk getting there (arthritis in both knees and there's nowhere to sit), but goshdarnit I was making it! I felt like crying when I made it, it was everything I imagined! I only walked out with two books but the joy of being there, and the coffee I drank, were beyond worth the wait!

I am so worried about small, independent booksellers. I love to browse and buy books. I rarely leave without books under my arm and a smile on my face. I love to read. I’ve gone downtown to buy at my favorite bookstores but they won’t let me in, want to do curb side. I buy without an itinerary, without an idea of what I will find. I don’t want anyone to do my shopping for me. Finding a way to support a store that won’t or can’t let me in is difficult. I hope the booksellers are able to hang in there. Buying online is boring.

Books have been making a come back as a luxury commodity just like country living. It is now a priviledge to have a country house besides the town house. Similarly, having the time to read a book alongside jobs and household responsibilities has become a luxury accessible to privileged few.

We are living in a rapidly changing regard for books. As a scientist 90% of my research is now on line. I have reached the point where my early manuscripts and reference are major collector items rather than popular journals. Several of my associates are now rare book dealers marketing medical and science papers and articles. Most are in the $300 range to several thousands of dollars range and much more. This is especially true if the manuscripts contain rare maps. These dealers are offering hundreds of thousand of dollars to major universities for their library collections of certain categories of text. Most of our major universities are now massing their research volumes on electronic file for efficiency of space and the deteriorating paper most of the 19th and twentieth century text are printed. It's just cheaper to go PC fileing rather than thousands of bulky deteriorating books filling hundreds and hundreds of shelves. University library books are being sold off and only a few contain original manuscripts. I have thousands of manuscripts now on my lap top or just a link away.

i am currently reading a book on the Crimean war, written by The Times correspondent. it was published during the war It has a faded red cover and hand coloured maps. he writes of disease and incompetence hindering the british campaign. There is also a poignant account of the charge of the light brigade. Unfortunately I can't find it at the moment, i think it is currently buried under a pile of other books. I'm just not sure which pile.

A good doc, but should be called the NYC booksellers. Could have branched out a bit more. For instance, John K. King books in Detroit has been in business over 50 years, and has 1 million volumes. How many other awesome book sellers are there in other cities that we don't know about? Btw, I watched this on Kanopy. All you need is a library card to have free access to their videos.
