I live less than 10 miles away from the Griot's main store in Tacoma it's always fun to go in there and just look around there's some fantastic cars in the showroom as well
I have had this polisher now for a few months and it’s been going well so far. I did a correction on a black Mustang using Sonax EX 03-06 and it came out amazing. The gloss was insane. If you pair this polisher with Sonax you’ll get amazing results.
What a great review!!!! As I have mentioned before, for a guy with the attention span of a puppy, you get right to the point and never turn what should be a 15 minute video into an hour. LOL. I just did a search of your older video's in hopes you did a review of the 3401. I know about the lube of that felt ring but the internal grease?...I have no idea. Like button smashed!
I have all 3 of those polishers! I use the BOSS G21 all the time and love it. I kind of wish I would have bought the G15 because sometimes the G21 has to much throw. Regardless though I think it is a great machine.
The G21 was a very smooth surprise the first time I tried it at GG facility. Agree that it can do more and on the larger trucks and SUV the power and long throw would be helpful. Do try using the Rupes pads with it, their pads do seem to smooth out some of the vibration.
I bought the Boss G15 this past January and used it the first time last weekend. My previous machine was the Harbor Freight which it has been converted to the 3 inch backing plate. The Boss is just a wonderful machine.
Just a word of caution is in order for anyone using a polisher that uses those "star" type "crush" lock washers. They can be unreliable when re-used and fail to truly lock the spindle bolt in place. I have a very similar polisher (actually looks identical) and after installing the washer mod and using it for a few hours I failed to notice the spindle bolt was backing out and the backing plate came flying off. I was lucky it didn't cause any damage but people need to be aware so they can either use a new one each time or replace it with a high quality version or at least check the bolt tightness periodically to make sure its not backing out. PS - Have you seen this? From the looks of it, it's similar to TAC Moonlight.... CG HYDROCHARGE CERAMIC SPRAY COATING
I replaced the grease and now my polisher gets hot really fast and grease spits out. And I feel like I lost power. Idk if this is a good idea if u aren't experienced doing it. I felt like mine was better with the factory grease to be honest. If you could do a more in depth video on how to replace it so us beginners dont damage our newly purchased machines like I must did. That would be fantastic
I was told that Griots puts a high quality Mobil 1 grease in at the factory plus if you change out grease the warranty is void. So I didn’t change my Griots grease out as I have 3 of them and wanna keep the lifetime warranty. I figure if it fails due to the grease if their not using Mobile 1 then they will go to a high quality grease if enough units fail because of it. I’ve tortured my G9 for about 6 years still going strong.
Thanks for taking these aprat Brian, I think I will do the same to the Meguiar's MT300 I've had a few years and grease it. I laughed when I saw you had the microfiber pad, I just did a paint correction on my 16 Camaro SS. Taking your and others advice I tried to start with the least aggressive foam pads and polishes I had on test spots only to waste tons of time. It ended up needing a MF pad and compounds just for love marks....It's safe to assume I have hard paint like you said about GM.
Excellent vid Brian. When u were correcting the paint of the Cadillac, how many passes did u do? I saw once and the vid came to an end. I’m new to polishing and I’m planning to get a griot polisher
Themachine I’m not sure what Brian would say, but it depends on what kind of car you have. Is it all mostly large flat panels, or does it have a lot of tight body lines. If it is mostly flat/boxy, the 21mm is probably best for you as it is harder to master in the tighter areas. The 15 is more versatile and from what I have watched mostly corrects at the same rate as the larger polisher while being easier to maneuver in tight areas. You will get the same job done in the same time on most cars because I believe the 15 oscillates faster than the 21. The 21 with a 6” pad will win on flat panels though since it covers more areas. This is what I think I have learned from watching 10-15 videos on these polishers and listening to podcasts. Would love to hear what Brian has to say, or even see a comparison video on the two.
TonyBaloni thank u Tony for the input. I just recently became a car enthusiast. I have a VW Jetta and a new X5. I’ve really got into car detailing in the last three months. That’s all that I watch. Now I’m learning about polishing for the first time. I’m gonna go with the 15. What u said makes sense. Thanks again and have a nice weekend
Themachine no problem! Check out some videos from the rag company or any video with Yvan Lacroix, literally changed my whole outlook on polishing. I was doing everything wrong lol. Low speed and hardly any pressure, vs what I have done with my 8” orbital which was speed 5 and I think more pressure than necessary. The 15 will be a more forgiving machine than the 21 especially since it will be your first polisher. I cannot wait to get mine!
Man that low lint lambskin pad finishes down FAR. Im excited to use it for a 1 step correction this Saturday. Gonna team it up with correction cream. I know that combo will be killer on hard ford Clearcoat
The production on the videos is very good I do like the new outro graphics. Do you do the editing and camera work yourself? Very helpful channel packed with info and from someone who knows what he talking about. If you ever in Ireland 🇮🇪 I will buy you a 🍻
I love these polisger videos...I have a 8mm da and I'm wanting to get another....trying to decide between Griots or Maxshine Pro 15mm or 21mm.....then I start watching your flex video (which I cant afford) and it makes me wonder if I should look for a used forced rotation unit. Wish I could test them all not able to do that. Do you have advice on 15mm vs 21mm and Griots vs Maxshine Pro?
I did the same. I converted my 7424 to a 3" backing plate and use the 5" on the G15. It's heavier than the 7424 but it's smoother and a bit quieter too. Works faster. I love the progressive trigger as I don't have to switch speed to spread the polish, I partially add speed with the trigger and after spreading do full throttle with lock. Happy with the G15 here.
Great review! If detailer’s are at the level to use that polisher why not just buy a Rupes, I believe you can get one of the older models for about the same price. Just my opinion
Nice video Brian. I do have two questions. First, can you post an Amazon link to the high temp grease you packed the gears with? Second. When you switched to the 5" pad, did it make the vibration worse? Maybe they weighted the 5" so it would equal out with the counter weight. I know several machines that when you switch to a 5" pad their vibration gets quite a bit worse because the counter weight and pad weight are mismatched. Thanks, Tom
Great question about switching to the 5" plate and balance. I think this grease would be good. www.amazon.com/Valvoline-SynPower-Synthetic-Automotive-Grease/dp/B000CQ4DK0/ref=sr_1_9?crid=121SLRGHU68RX&keywords=bearing+grease&qid=1554907581&s=automotive&sprefix=bearing+%2Cautomotive%2C178&sr=1-9
@@apexdetail85 whats the advantages to switching to a smaller five inch backing plate? Seems to be counter productive purchasing a 21 mm throw machine then stepping down to a smaller backing plate that covers less area.
@@jwill9877 late to the party but, when you reduce the backing plate size from the example your giving...it equals more power transferred to the surface your working on. It will be more aggressive than it already was and deeper defect removal.
I own a da and it’s slow. I never used it with a microfiber pad though. I wonder how it would work with meguiars m105 or m110? I guess I should try it first before I run out and buy a rotary. But there’s no way you can make a living using a da.
No doubt that a rotary will always have a place in car detailing but you can definitely make a living with a good DA. You can start by getting better compounds than meguires.
Thanks for the video! I have the G8 and was thinking of getting the G21 for my classic car. I was told due to my inexperience I shouldn’t get the long throw G21 and get the G9. What do you think?
Thanks so much for the review, I have a question regarding polishers though. If you had a whole series of polishers and all of them had the same throw, what are the differences that make some nicer to use and better at correcting defects faster than others. Thanks a ton I look forward to the next video
Right on thanks, one more thing if you dont mind, do you replace the grease in all your machines or use them and just replace if you're not satisfied with it out of the box?
@@apexdetail85 Brian, I weighed the counterbalance on my Maxshine M21 Pro. It's CNC machined steel just like the G21 and it weighs the excact same...7.40 ounces. I have a feeling it's the exact same counterbalance. Would it would be safe to say the G21 and Maxshine M21 Pro will have very similar vibration/smoothness? Do the bearings determine smoothness(NSK vs. whatever the Maxshine Pro uses)?
Good review, thanks, an off topic question, do you have a recommendation on the lights your using while polishing indoors? I have a scangrip for inspection looking for some lights and stands that won’t break the bank .
I'm looking into the boss g21 and a rupes bigfoot mk2 21mm as my first 21mm throw polisher. If you had to choose between the two, what would you pick and why?
I bought this same polisher 2 years ago and want to re grease it. Is there a specific brand you recommend, or any high temp, moisture resistant, lithium is sufficient in your opinion?
Nice heavy plastic other than that this is a piece of GARBAGE! I’m on my 3rd one(again waiting forever to have it delivered) trigger lock pin flies out for no reason, speed controller is junk, and they just stop working. Look elsewhere, pay a little more and you’ll be better off.
