They are sailor's out looking for a good time with two young lovelies. Stan and Ollie are out to impress, they intend to buy drinks (in a soda fountain) for everyone, but Stan only has 15 cents, enough for 3 sodas. Sodas were 5 cents in 1929! Here is Jimmy Finlayson doing several of his patented "double-take and squint' looks.

I totally `grasped the situation` that this scene is absolute perfection. Two comedy geniuses who totally eclipse anybody from the modern age. Timing, grace, humility, and a wonderful sense of innocence permeate through this sketch from start to finish.

"My half was on the bottom!" - Classic. This is without doubt one of the funniest scenes in the history of film. So beautifully understated. Much better than any of the crap that passes for comedy these days. Stan and Ollie were worth 10 billion Seth MacFarlanes.

Also, Seth MacFarlane is a very crass and cruel person, whereas Laurel and Hardy didn't have to resort to using sexually explicit material to get laughs AND they were universally regarded as nothing but kind, sweet, loving people.
