THE BOYS Season 3 Was A Bit Of A Letdown - Review 

The real tragedy is that they are back to the end of season 2 basically, a whole season as filler.

100% agree with you, the ending of the boys was so bad. They really did a good job building everything up and dropped the ball hard.

I loved season 3 up until the last episode. I never understood and still don’t understand why starlight arbitrarily decided soldier boy was a bigger threat than homelander. The writers knew it was bs and didn’t even bother trying to justify it and then by the end everyone except Maeve has completely lost their mind. Homelander and Ryan are gonna kill a lot of innocent people and the boys and starlight are directly responsible

I thought I was taking crazy pills listening to other reviewers go on about how good S3 was. The highlights were butcher, homelander and soldier boy but the rest are awful. I thought starlight in particular has gone from an interesting character to an unlikable hypocrite. I also don't understand why someone like butcher wouldn't just go and get some actual V and shoot up with that and go out in a blaze of glory. That last episode was the epitome of the whole season. Character behaviour and motivation didn't make any sense at all. Here's hoping S4 brings it back and stops with this weekly release BS 🤞

For a season known for its shock value I thought the final episode lacked teeth, everyone makes it out, was a bit disappointed, did enjoy the rest of the season though

That Frenchie side story was so fucking boring, the definition of filler content. Overall I liked the season but it's the weakest so far.

Im glad that theres other people that were disappointed in season 3. Damn that last episode was really a let down. Another thing that disappointed me was I wish they would have fouced on Victorias character more.

Agreed that last episode was pretty bad out of nowhere decisions that made absolutely no sense from all character standpoints. Also that entire action scene felt extremely cheap both choreography and set maybe they blew all their money on the herogasm episode?

Homelander alone makes this show better than every marvel show to date.

Even though I enjoyed season 3, the finale was such a let down. The bookend on Black Noire’s ending was disappointing and Mauve somehow surviving that fall was weak!

Really The Boys tv series has almost nothing to do with the comics since ep two. There's lots of comics stories left to tell here, but the show isn't interested in that. The show's writers reach in and grab a comic scenario from time to time, but they never set it up the way the books do, and none of the characters have been developed on the show the way the book characters do so the outcome is wildly different. The show is it's own thing, for better or worse. It has it's own political agenda and everything bends towards that. Frenchie, from the show, seems to just be there to translate for The Female/Kamiko...and give her a dance partner, I guess. The character has been neutered. If they gave the guy something to actually do that was his own story, and not him just being pushed around by various women, I'm sure you'd be back on board. I agree that the final episode was ridiculous and came to naught. For such a bloody show to have it's big climactic battle end like an A-Team episode (Big EXPLOSION!!!! "Oh, my head! Ouchie!" back in the van) was garbage...and I agree it was in service of stretching out a story that should be wrapped up already. And then we're left with a team that isn't really a team because everyone wants to do their own thing so there is no common purpose. Blecch.

Soldier Boy failed as a concept because they TOLD us he was bad, but they SHOWED us a tragic hero. THEN Maeve survived for some reason despite the explosion (and loss of powers) hitting two hundred feet above the street. THEN they took the Frenchie sidestory too far. THEN they had the octopus cock sucking joke and ran with that too far. THEN it was constant undermining of Soldier Boy's story that didn't gel with how he actually acted, as I said above. THEN they took an episode and a half to develop Noir and ruin the mystery of the character just to kill him off unceremoniously.

I think your going to get some hate for being even semicritical of this perfect show. Personally, I respect you for being honest. I like this show, I don't love this show, and most of your critiques are spot on. You don't know who to cheer on in S3, unlimited funds, raunchy situations just for the heck of it (sex BS), and yes an exciting, but somehow oddly weak final episode. Look I still think it is a good show, but it seems like nobody wanted to acknowledge the relatively obvious issues your pointed out. I don't want to say they went the path of least resistance, but they didn't go in a really interesting direction. I still say it is a good show, but forgo the opportunity to be a great show this season.

If Homelander did lose his powers this season, then he also would have been killed.

I thought Soldier Boy's blast kills you, not just take away your powers. Why then did so many people die at Herogasm? But then Maeve didn't die and that totally confused me. So perhaps there are some problems here

My biggest gripe with the finale was how Maeve was able to hold her own against Homelander in a fight. Why has there been so much hoopla about other supes deeply fearing Homelander because he’s so much more powerful than the rest when it seems Maeve can do some pretty serious damage to him on her own? Why do The Boys even need Soldier Boy? Just get Maeve and literally any other Supe and they can beat him apparently. I know it’s a seemingly small complaint but it honestly kinda breaks one of the core premises of the show.

your critiques are valid. but i also still love and want more of the show. My list of the brilliance: The writing - smart, funny, interesting, and timely. Makes fun of everyone! so good Homelander - introduction of his split personality. taking over the corporation. turning his son in his favor. one of all-time top villains! Butcher - his family backstory was impactful. And if you're getting lost on who to root for ALWAYS root for Butcher! (or Homelander ;) Huey - yeah he's a wuss, but he's had a baby step towards having more confidence and evolving as a character. the scene where he and butcher held down Homelander, Huey showed to give his life for the cause was probably his biggest moment yet The Deep - Fish torture/porn. Every scene with him is funny. Except his girlfriend is annoying and can LEAVE NOW! Black Noir - Cartoon hallucinations And OF COURSE - Herogasim, one-appendage hand jobs, and dildo weapons!

Ok, talking Frenchie, I loved the part in ep2 or 3, when Kimiko was loving watching that chick singing, and the look on Frenchie's face was so confused, listening to this boring music, and looking at Kimiko, like, "you actually like this shit?"🤣

I binge watched the Boys for the first time this week. I was so invested in all the characters, but when they all turned to fight Solider Boy instead of Homelander I. WAS. PISSED. like WTF. It was a total draw out to get another season. It would have been better to just have a satisfying 3 seasons. Butcher and Starlight pissed me TF off. I don't think they can be likable at all in season 4. Major points for Mother Milk as his past opened up. The only two who I actually like and root for is Frenchie and Kimiko. Everyone else could die and I wouldn't blink out one tear. 🤦🏽‍♀️

What makes you think the beam wouldn't have killed the kid? He killed loads of people at the herogasm orgy. I didn't understand how Mauve survived tbh.

That’s not true, Butcher does care about people. And he does care about Ryan. But I will admit, he turned on Soldier Boy for a really stupid reason, because Ryan wouldn’t have been killed and he also wouldn’t have lost his powers, because Homelander was right in front of him.

I personally really liked The Boys Season 3. For me it's the best Season of this show. Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy was a fantastic casting choice.

I agree, the long goal should have been for Soldier Boy to zap Homelander's powers so that for at least the first 2-3 episodes of season 4, Homelander had to live as a mortal. There was way too many stories going on for this season for anything to get a satisfying resolution. Stormfront was a much better character than Soldier Boy because she told a better story about what Vought was originally created to be. Soldier Boy had a few good one liners, but other than that, really didn't bring much to the season.

Frenchie is padding. Not interested in that side, side, side, side story.

For me: Season 1 (10/10), Season 2 (7/10), Season 3 (9/10). The only problem was in the final of season 3.

This is the curse of tv series. First, they make a series based on a novel and make a few changes here and there. Eventually, the series becomes a parody of itself because so many changes are done in order to milk the most money from it and when they lose control of the plot, they just end the series in a disappointing way and move on to a different project.

Some shows end up being all about the ride. Yes we all love great endings, character deaths, plot twists, but a great ride is also enjoyable. Sons of Anarchy was another show with a so-so ending but man, that ride was one of the best. Who knows, if they bring back Soldier Boy for more seasons and he's just as awesome, keeping him alive would have made it worth it.

Good show … but when they incorporate modern day politics it’s a heavy downer. Also soldier boy is the best thing that happened to the show and they did him dirty.

Soldier Boy's "orgasm blast" has a ferocious concussive co-element, so it probably would've killed the kid. It's a minor miracle Kimiko and Maeve survived, but they were fully mature supes at the time. I'm not sure how I felt about S3. With Black Noir dead, Maeve presumably off the reservation for good, and Soldier Boy back on ice, they're really shrinking the amount of supes Butcher can target. I have a sinking feeling that making Homelander's kid evil is going to be on the cringey side. And Annie joining the team? Yeah, sure, we'll see how long that lasts.

Series is great. Better than any of the Marvel shows or movies last few outings.

Personally just like season 2 I became more disappointed the more it when. This season had some very contrived writing and mischaracterisation. Homelander doesn’t feel scary anymore, SB got shat on this season when he has the best arc. I think the writers wanted us to hate him but everyone likes him. It feels like parody now not satire. It’s becoming shock moment to shock moment instead of a cohesive story.

That starlight build up was disappointing. I was expecting her to blast the shit out of soldier boy and home lander. And all she did was one blast and that was it. Such a let down

yep... season 3 was great up until the last moments of the last episode.. then.. they crap all over.. rushed suff and resolved in a very convenient way.... but the season was cool.

Daaang. All the other Channels fell all over themselves to be first to celebrate this as the best season yet. Not you, you maverick. Way to buck the system. Meh, I thought it was on par with the others. His chest burst thing does kill. Remember that Asian chick was laid up in the hospital? She wasn't healing after getting thrown into the wall. Anyway, yeah, I'm bored with the Frenchie character. And, man, make some more poster ones. Those were funny.

Good to see a review that at least acknowledge the ending was absurd. I did not like the whole season when comparing to the previous ones. They removed all the fun that the first 2 seasons had. I loved the way they used the gore in those, but in this season, the gore and the depraved sexual content was way too overdone to a point where it removed any of its positive shock effects - it was just grose. Like most sitcoms after a couple of great seasons, this show kinda became a caricature of itself because the writers/show runners just keep trying to recreate the most memorable tropes and remove all the nuance that made it great in the first place. For the first 2 seasons I was at each episode thinking I didn't want it to end. On this one I just couldn't wait for the ending! I might watch the next seasons because I want to see the end... but at this point I just don't care anymore... all characters just seem so dumb.

You know, I found Season 1 awesome. I watched only a few minutes from the first episode of Season 2 and I never watched the rest. Out of curiosity I tried to watch a Season 3 episode but I bailed it after a few minutes. I saw some clips on RU-vid and I never regretted for my decision. After Season 1 the show became a cash grab.

Completely agree on Frenchie. They got Frenchie and The Female's characters completely wrong. In the comic their relationship is more father/daughter. Seeing them have a romantic relationship here hurts.

As aside.. if you want a palate cleanser from the garbage, (if you haven't already) watch a British Crime Drama called.. "Line of Duty." You'll appreciate it's originality and storylines. Trust me.

the one thing i outright hate about this show is that in season 1 episode 2 they have an entire episode dedicated to the boys trying to figure out how to kill translucent and it's a fantastic episode with a concept that i think is amazing it is in my opinion the best episode of the entire show but they never go back to that concept in season three they just have the temporary v witch squanders any possibility that season one concept to come back and i hate that because that season 1 episode perfectly encapsulates the theme of the show but they never go back to it apart from that admittedly great scene from season 3

Also the comics ran for 72 issues including an epilogue which worked out at 6 collections, which could loosely be described as 6 seasons. It regularly wrote itself into corners, Just bare with it

You bring an interesting point that nex season would have been more interesting if Homelander had lost his powers. Although that seems interesting, i think it's twice as terrifying now because he is LOVED by his fanatic followers and can do everything without being held accountable b y virtually anyone.

Your spot on with the Frenchie side stories, they were just boring and didn't really help the overall plot at all. I do love the idea of pairing Kamiko with Starlight, I hope they ramp that up in season 4.

Homelander and Butcher carry the show. This season Jensen helped a bunch too. Everyone else is so annoying or awful. Hughie is the biggest whiny wimp ever and everyone (other than Butcher) is whining and giving a bunch of naive middle-school ‘moral’ speeches. MM is probably the worst character I’ve ever seen. Full stop. Jar Jar looks good in comparison. He is the most pandering caricature and cynically over the top representation of ‘blackness’ I have ever seen. He seems to be an amalgamation of every white executives opinion of ‘what a black man is’ shoved into one poorly conceived ‘character.’ He wears a different black artist on his 1,000 different t-shirts every scene, every inch of his home is covered in social justice black rights or vaguely African paraphernalia, he wears shaft inspired leather jackets in every single scene, he infuses every line he speaks with the most awkward version of Denzel Washington he can manage and he’s aggressively, mind-numbingly focused on staying true to his childish ideals in the face of increasingly obvious events that require a more pragmatic and realistic approach. He is the laziest token of black culture that I’ve ever seen represented in any piece of media in my life. He essentially has nothing that defines him outside of his ‘blackness’ and his barely concealed fight for justice against white tyranny/violence/police brutality represented by Soldier Boy. That being said, season 3 was pretty good, but was carried mostly by homelander, butcher, and Jensen.

As someone who loved season 1, this season was veryyyyy easy to put off watching new episodes. I stalled out after episode 3 and still haven’t jumped back in. I don’t think it got shitty, they just don’t seem to have a driving force anymore after finishing up the Becca storyline.

I remember when this show was a satire about morally inverted superheroes and nerd culture. The primary antagonists were a deranged celebrity Superman and an evil corporation. By Season 3, we discover the villains are Donald Trump, Fox News, and Toxic Masculinity. Who could’ve seen this coming from Hollywood writers???!?!?!?!?!?!

Season 3 was boring in my mind. I am so bored of homelander, yeah I get it, he's insane, but three seasons of the same plot is boring. Him losing his powers would have been amazing as it would actually cause his charecter to change. Hughie is a pathetic peice of shit and season 3 ruined him. His 'redemption' at the end by not tacking v24 had so little impact. Especially since starlight is weak as hell. Her at 100% strength is pathetic. Frenchie is boring. Butcher is boring, it's the same shit for three seasons. Him not dying immideitaly and instead getting 12 - 18 months to live feels like such an ass pull. He's taken v24 at least 5 times he should be goo. I never liked solider boy, he could have been a gun, the only thing he added was being homelander dad and nothing really came of that. Noir dies a pointless death and maeve who hasn't been in the show is the one who takes solider boy out. Why. Noirs whole stroy was leading to him killing solider boy. The rest of the seven is boring, a train and deep doing the same shit constantly. They both should have died at herogasm. The show has no stakes. Every season the main charecters get out of way too many crazy situations and just live. Homelander has no reason to keep them alive, he should have just murdered everyone at the end of season 3. Only 1 main charecter has died since season 1 and that's black noir who only became a charecter this season. Next season will just be about finding another way to kill homelander and that's just dull when the plan would have worked perfectly. Also what was up with the head popper. She was set up as the main villain for this season yet the show forgets about her multiple times. She ends last season moving up the political ladder after killing someone and does the exact same thing this season. I did like some stuff about this season. I like mm, his story was great and I liked how he and starlight teamed up. And I love Ashley. She's easily my faviroite charecter. I can see why people like this season but I only watched it because of an obligation, I wasn't excited to see what happens next.

Personally I really enjoyed the whole season. The underlying theme of how parents shape us and create cycles of abuse could been seen in over and over. I felt Mav was sidelined a bit and with the ever growing cast, sending her off was smart...however I do wish they would have had actual deaths. Linking the V24 to a use limit and the addiction of drugs was a bit too on point, but I understand they want to limit that power scaling. I think Black Noir will return with a different personality and his death was meant to shock and show how unhinged Homelander was becoming. The last couple episodes do seem like they were setting some story threads for next season. A-Train's redemption is just starting and I feel he will make a bigger shift next season. I don't think that Solider Boy will come back soon, but he was played so damn well. I'd watch a Boys movie over a Marvel movie at this current point.
