New Zealand were very lucky they didn't have two men off with red cards and a penalty try against them. The reason Ireland had 15 men in the game is because they didn't make amateur mistakes like the All Blacks did. Don't blame the referee, blame your players and your management.

@@yoshi-bg7hs Yup, the guy was from SA, but he clearly knows the laws better than you. The guy from SA saved your arse when your winger hit their's in the head and only saw a yellow card, he saved your arse by not giving a penalty try to Ringrose, who was neither offsides nor obstructing Ufa by the way. The officials *did* say there was a change of direction but they also said that it did not mitigate the sanction down to yellow - the change of direction did not change the body height of the ball carrier so your guy still went in to high and hit him in the head. This is universally applied that way around the world but when it happens to the AB's then it's wrong? Please go and learn the laws. Apart from all the discipline stuff, I feel like in the last year the AB's have lacked creativity. There are a limited number of players in the world who can truly break a game open. We lacked that flair that Will Jordan, Kieran Read, McKenzie, Nonu, Carter, Cruden, Dagg and others have brought to the Jersey in the last decade. Its a big creative burden for just Beauden particularly once Ardie comes off. I think we try a little bit to beat these teams at their style, instead of them having to adapt to our style. One of the things that was synonymous with playing the prime ABs from 08-18 was that it felt like there was 15 backs out there because of how skilled our forwards were. Constantly they would rumble up the middle with offloads and perfectly timed tip passes. I havent seen that from this pack in a while, and Ireland's forwards looked the more skilled, physicality aside. Then in the back line, if we are going to pick our 'power' players (Leicester, Tupaea, Jordie) instead of our creatives, then we have to win collisions. I didnt feel like we were any more powerful than the Irish. Lack of creativity was felt for sure - only 2 tries (1 lucky, 1 inconsequential). To some degree I think fortune favors the bold and at the minute the ABs feel quite safe.

There was a time when many people in New Zealand got bored of watching the ABs, because they felt that it was a foregone conclusion that the team will win. Now, many want to criticize the ABs to death, because they can't handle the team losing. Well, most other top rugby teams have learnt how to neutralize the ABs main strengths, and any of them can beat the ABs on the day. My biggest concern, as an ABs supporter since 1990, is that I don't see any real evolution in the team's play under Ian Foster. Granted, he introduced many new young players, and he was dealt with by COVID-19, but I am not convinced that he has been able to take the ABs to greater heights. Three areas need to be improved urgently, if we are to stand any chance of winning to 2023 WC: (1) Greater and more consistent intensity in the game, especially at the breakdown. We've been bullied and outsmarted too many times at the breakdown under Foster. (2) Deal with high balls in a much more effective way. After the 3 defeats against the sprinboks in 2009, we managed to perfect that area, but it went awry again. (3) Implement and cement a multi-dimensional attacking strategy.

AB pack simply isn't powerful enough to trouble the elite NH packs. Too much focus on having props doing sidesteps and second rows out-the-back passes; looks good, but the NH took a look at the Saffa blueprint and realised they could target that area. AB pack isn't intimidating; not powerful in tight, scrum not attacking, maul not great, ruck too lightly resourced. If the Kiwi supporters think Ireland are good, bear in mind France are even better with England on the way back. France, Ireland and England in that order can do a number in the AB forwards.

Had to turn off after the card soap-box. The attitude toward cards in the SH (for my money the Aussie Foxtel team are even worse) probably has a lot to do with league being more popular here, but it’s dinosaur era discourse. If you watch any NH rugby you’ll know that they play under a far stricter interpretation of the laws and it’s actually pretty jarring to see how much the Aus and NZ unions are flailing around tying to do everything in their power to avoid changing behaviours. Rugby cannot survive an NFL style class action. It can’t survive with players retiring early from head trauma. If these ex pros actually care about the sport, they’ll put their tiny violins away, realise that the physicality of the sport in its current form is a distant cousin to what they played in the 90s and 00s and get with the changing times.

Complaints about cards running the game is rubbish. The laws are in place calling out the sanction for breaking them. The players/ coaches have responsibility to know and comply the refs and officials implement them. Looking for change in the way laws are implemented because it is reffed different/ softer ( not as strictly) at domestic level is not accepting that it's a global game where sanctions have seen behaviours change and more disciplined approach from teams. Player safety has to be prioritized. A game affected by cards is a price until players comply. In this game don't forget Ireland lost Ringrose as well as a result of the red card incident during this game and for the rest of the tour potentially. Red in this incident is the correct call. The responsibility is with the defender. For the first yellow card. In my opinion it should have been red given the force of the contact on the head of the Ireland wing and the NZ winger being out of control in the air. The officials used the mitigation of the first point of contact being in the chest area to make it yellow but that is a very generous judgement. For the second yellow it could easily have been judged a penalty try as there was no coverage evident between Ringrose ( who was tackled without the ball) and the try line. The ref said 9 was covering but it looked like he was part of 2 players going to tackle sexton. For the Ireland yellow card it could also have been an AB penalty try given it was close to the line. On the players mixup for Savea ect. Law 3 covers all of these aspects. Once he was taken off to cover the prop he was out of the game. Further the scrum at this point was uncontested due to NZ not having sufficient competent front row. This meant that 8 players were required in the scrum plus + further player removed from the backline until contested again. NZ should have had 12 players only on the field at this time period. In law this sanction should have been a penalty to Ireland for NZ having incorrect number of players on the field. The chaos of sending the 2 players back to the field after this is a point where NZ should have been further sanctioned. The ref could have easily been much harsher on NZ on Saturday but missed / chose to downplay a number of issues, Such as his comments on not agreeing with the laws when giving the red card. In general NZ didn't appear to know the laws sufficiently or expect a more loose local interpretation for an international occasion. They should not expect to get away with stuff at international level they may get away with at club level. If it is the case their club game needs more strict reffing. A straight clear reffing standard implementation everywhere is what is needed not calls for adjusting laws you don't agree with after every match. Player health going forward has to be a priority. Multiple concussions causing early dementia and brain damage is not worth any entertainment / ruining the game/ game gone soft comments. Read Andrew Sheridan's book to wake up to this ( English prop of 2003 rwc winning team), he cannot remember any of his playing career due to concussions. On a cynical level such injuries with no actions by world rugby puts the game at risk of bankruptcy or of parents not allowing their kids to play at all. NZ discipline was I think an issue on Saturday. A number of penalties at the breakdown for tackling players beyond the ruck ect. It appears from comments that there is insecurity around the physical presence of the NZ forwards getting outmatched. This is going to extreme with the illegal actions resulting in penalties and cards. A bit more disciplined approach might work better. Joe Smyth made Ireland into the most disciplined team around. He is a good addition to the coaching staff of NZ to improve here.

Irish Coaches' plan for this series is to lose at Eden Park to sugar up the All Blacks then hit them hard in both Dunedin and especially Wellington while the All Blacks are hurting to take their well earned 1st Rugby series win in New Zealand. So far the plan is two-3rds of the way there already. One more great effort like Saturday won't kill anyone as clearly shown by their amazing strength to nail all the important facets of the game of rugby in Dunedin. Whether 13 against 15 it doesn't count because the ref used the current rule book on all his decisions and we alllllllllllllllllllllllll witnessed them live. We need to adapt our game plan for game 3. The Irish learnt quickly that Aaron would skip pass to the third in the line. They simply put pressure on that man and we were stopped cold. Practice taking high balls too as it’s where they will again target. The tall Barrett lad is good at 15 and can take high up and unders well, I trust he will be picked there. AB’s need to target the Irish line by pick and go up the middle, close over and over, til they don’t fan out, then go wide, Not width from the get go, too easy to counter. Looking forward to game 3. Jeff Wilson doing his best to ignore the elephant in the room with New Zealand rugby is not going to help New Zealand rugby. We've seen game after game NZ players putting their heads and shoulders into the necks and heads of opposition players. We've seen NZ players cynically taking players out of tours with scandalous dirt plays like the infamous Umaga and Mealamu assault on Brian O'Driscoll. NZ are losing and will lose games now because they have a terrible thuggery problem. The only issue is that they are getting pinged for it now by referees. Oh and Jeff, Ireland BEAT New Zealand by playing better and cleaner rugby than NZ did. At no point in the game were NZ EVER in the lead. You were soundly beaten. If you want to play MMA rugby then bring it to the UFC or Bellator. It's a rugby pitch Jeff and it has rules; obey them or you're out of there.

No. If you recall the Stockdale try we beat NZ with in the Guinness Series(2018), Dane Coles takes out Johnny whilst he's eating his half-time orange, after getting the ball away to Bundee to pass to Stockdale. Codie Taylor stuck his shoulder into Johnny and got a yellow in November 2021. Serial thuggery from New Zealand. Like Tana Umaga said after he and Mealamu got away with their assault, "it's not tiddlywinks" and it isn't UFC either lads, it's rugby. "You can't say it was a fair fight, because it wasn't 15 on 15" ???? What is this drivel haha And generally I love listening to NZ analysts etc. as they are normally so knowledgeable and interesting re. rugby, especially the commentators who are probably amongst the least biased and most knowledgeable international rugby commentators around right now. Both teams stepped out to play the same game and within that game are a set of rules and punishments for breaking them, which are just as much a part of the game as a pass or a sidestep. Break the rules, get punished. NZ deservedly received their yellows and red and were lucky not to lose another 7 points to a penalty try. The Maori ABs were awarded a penalty try for an identical infringement yesterday vs. Ireland, which should prove that point easily enough. Not sure what the man's problem is but he seems hell bent on making sure everybody knows NZ lost players during the game, and inferring and at times saying outright basically, that that negates the victory or cancels it out. Ireland won and deserved to. NZ won the previous week and deserved to. Sure, talk about the card incidents and how they affected the game etc., but going by this guy's attitude, a yellow or red card in a game should just mean the game is called off and plated at a later date so it can be 15 on 15. Maybe he is just a proud NZer and doesn't like admitting his team deserved to lose, but he should try open be a bit more objective. His shtick in this video is basically - "Ireland are a world class side, and we know they are (basically saying this to try and make it seem like he isn't taking away from ireland). But this wasn't fair because we got a player red carded and two others yellow carded".

As an AB fan abroad, my observation is that the pack has declined from the time Carter left the team, down to the the disastrous test in France. This past weekend, ABs left the whole middle open, with Cane as an example, missing a critical tackle in the first few minutes that led to that early try. I don't think the outcome would have been very different with 15 per side. Ireland also pushed ABs back in the first test every time they phased from the 22 to the goal line. At this time, I must say that ABs do not have the personnel to upgrade their front two rows. They also cannot drive up the middle to gain enough meters to open up to the outside. What ABs need to win is a Kiwi version of Lord Humungus.

True. From the bit of SRP that I watched this year, I saw a distinct trend of referees wanting the game to flow rather than the laws being accurately applied. Around the world we hear people talk of whistle-happy referees ruining games, but if a referee blows his whistle every 20 seconds because players are cocking it up that often, then he is doing his job correctly and we, NZ public included, need to blame the players for that, not the referee.

Its both a strength to think like this and a weakness. Its a strength because it shows a relentless commitment to standards, but it can be a weakness when the chips are down . If Ireland are in front with 10 minutes to go next weekend then we will see the ABs throwing the kitchen sink at them, but at the same time the black players will be thinking : 'what is the matter with us ?
