Hope you all enjoy this in-depth look into the world of Gene Takovic. It almost feels like it became a different show towards the end, but still maintained that same level of quality. Here is 'The Brilliance of Better Call Saul' playlist if you wish to see my analysis of other episodes: ru-vid.com/group/PLceuGaxdwSJU5PZtzH9-sa0vZCNjhSBti

My two favourite montages were Jimmy leaving Davis & Main, with the brightly coloured 'dancing' car lot 'dolls' inspiring him with his suits, and the use of 'Big Rock Candy Mountain' in the lab excavation shots. Just brilliant!!

32:57 Good job. You are like the first video essay ever who didn’t take side with Kim in this conversation. Everyone else all chastised Jimmy as an absolute villain in this scene even though what he said was right and Kim herself knew it. That’s why I think this scene 33:41 and the scene when Mike visited Nacho’s dad are the most important scenes of the whole show because they are meant to disillusion the audience from their favorite characters’ actions. The audience have a quite well-balanced opinions on Jimmy and Walter because the shows never fail to remind us that they are bad guys but not the same for Mike and Kim, who are the most loved characters of the franchise. These scenes are crucial to remove the bias.
@That0therGeorge
@That0therGeorge 9 месяцев назад
Thank you! Yeah I think Gene's question is more than fair. Completely agreed with your assessment on those scenes as well. As said in a couple of these analysis videos, I think the morality exists on a spectrum and really the majority of characters in these shows have a bad trait/something to feel guilty about.

@@That0therGeorge I don’t like Jesse that much, to be honest. I have seen so many people blame Walter for the planes crash (which is true because he was 50% responsible for it by watching Jane die) but chose to forget that the reason Jane got herself back to drug addiction in the first place was because of Jesse. Before she met him, she was sober. Jesse got her high again. I become Chuck McGill every time there are some characters who got a free pass too much more than they deserve just because they are likable characters. “But not our Kimmy/ Mikey/ Jesse, couldn’t be precious Kimmy/ Mikey/ Jesse.”
@Jared_Wignall
@Jared_Wignall 8 месяцев назад
@@nont18411I don’t think Jesse was really responsible for Jane’s relapse. I mean, he wanted her to leave when he was going to get high as a result of Combo’s death. She later shows up with drugs and there’s nothing to indicate he asked her to get him any kind of drugs. He has meth and weed, but she introduces him to heroine. Seems like she wanted to help Jesse grieve because of the loss of his friend and knowing he he’s done drugs, she brings him drugs and does them with him. This obviously isn’t good for Jane to do, but I don’t recall a scene where he asks Jane to get him anything regarding getting him drugs or anything of the sort, deleted or otherwise. She leaves, but then goes back to him and Jesse knows she is in recovery, hence why he wants her to leave as he doesn’t want her to relapse. Now, Walt is primarily responsible for the bulk of horrible things that happened due to his pride, ego and wanting of power. Not to say Jesse is blameless, but the series shows that at the end of the day Jesse is essentially a good guy who got involved with the wrong people and Walt was likely always like what we saw him at his worst, he just suppressed it as long as he could until his cancer diagnosis.

29:50 You absolutely nailed it because I felt the same way watching that montage, just empty and disappointed. So many of the previous montages were upbeat and showed how clever Jimmy/Saul was in executing his scams. But that one was so depressing, not only because of Gene throwing his life away, but also how despicable that particular scam was. He was essentially poisoning these guys, breaking into their homes and stealing all of their finances

Great analysis of Gene Takovic. Vince Gilligan, Peter Gould, Bob Odenkirk and the writers involved did a great job of showcasing Saul’s life after Breaking Bad starting the first five seasons of Better Call Saul where we primarily focus on Jimmy McGill before Saul Goodman appears as we know him. It’s nice to see four episodes that primary focus on Gene, one entirely dedicated to Gene while the last three focus on Gene while also going back to before, during and after the Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul timelines. I love how Bob Odenkirk basically gave three performances in the final season of Better Call Saul: Jimmy McGill, Saul Goodman and Gene Takovic. I love seeing the differences and similarity between the different personas he takes on, it really makes you appreciate the performance and character even more. It would be nice if Bob Odenkirk and the show as a whole would finally win an Emmy, but with the track record the show has had, I know to not get my hopes up for such a thing. Plus, a lot of great shows and films that get nominated for major awards don’t always win and in some cases those are the shows and films that are beloved the most as time goes on. Thank you for the video man, keep up the great work and take care!
@That0therGeorge
@That0therGeorge 8 месяцев назад
Hello Jared, thank you so much for your kind comment and input. Yeah I think the show is perfectly structured with how it presents Jimmy, Saul and Gene. The opening of the first five seasons can almost act as 'teasers' but they really do establish a lot about his lifestyle post 'Breaking Bad'. Bob Odenkirk is a fantastic actor with a lot of a range. It was interesting seeing how much different he was in 'Nobody' compared to his TV roles. Honestly, I'm not too bothered about the awards. I would strongly argue that 'Better Call Saul' is the best written show of all time. Plenty of people agree with that and understand why. I personally think that means a lot more than any awards and hopefully the showrunners agree with that sentiment. Thank you very much again for the kind words, it was really nice reading this comment. Please feel free to comeback to the channel at any point to discuss anything media related, it would be great to see you here again in the future.

@@That0therGeorge will do! And I agree with you regarding the awards. Years from now, people will look back at Better Call Saul and see just how great it is and notice how it didn’t win the kind of awards one would think it would have received and those who put a lot of stock into awards hopefully will understand that they don’t mean a whole lot, especially when something that’s the best kept being overlooked for awards when you’d think it would win something.

The only pet peeve I have with the whole Gene Takovic thing is that The whole “Gene being in Nebraska” thing was solely to subvert our expectations and has no payoff to the plot. The show teased us over and over that Jimmy went to the same place as Kim’s hometown. Did he want to see Kim again but since Ed chose the place for him, is he being set up by Ed? And for what purpose? How much did Ed know about Jimmy and Kim’s relationship? It was huge discussion for so many years and the answer is “Nah, it means nothing. Kim is not even in Nebraska. She’s in Florida.” Actually, Jimmy doesn’t even know that Kim was born in Nebraska and I think he never will.
@That0therGeorge
@That0therGeorge 9 месяцев назад
You aren't incorrect, but I'm not sure I agree that there really needs to be a pay-off for it. I liked the Jesse pay-off of him choosing Alaska because it would also be Mike's choice, but there wasn't any reason for Walt to go to New Hampshire specifically and I don't feel that is a bad thing, same with Gene. There's a chance Jimmy and Kim would've talked about it at some point, but yeah we never saw that conversation in the show.
@nont18411
@nont18411 9 месяцев назад
@@That0therGeorge The New Hampshire thing for Walter is fine because it was supposed to get him off the grid and it didn’t have that much significance to the plot. The Nebraska thing is different because the show kept showing Kim’s Nebraska flashback to us and even went overboard in the very first scene of the show with the song “Address Unknown” “From the place of your birth (Kim was born in Nebraska), to the end of the earth, I’ll (Jimmy) search only to find only to find address unknown (Omaha, Nebraska)” So the reveal that it’s all a red herring kinda bummed me out with all those set ups. They could have Kim be someone from Florida and the plot will have no difference. In fact, I think Florida will give a better context too because it will show that Kim had to go back to work in a place that gave her so many bad memories. That’s why she’s miserable. Instead, it’s just Kim working in another state randomly.

I personally thought that they were amazing. They had a lot of the highest points of the entire show. It was always exciting seeing where Gene was at the start of every season, and the absence of one in season 6 only built hype for the end of the show. @That0therGeorge

That's an interesting take, but I'm not sure I'd agree with that completely. Jimmy and Saul both had bubbly personalities and, for the most part, Saul didn't seem to have too much to worry about until he met Walter. I think the guilt of Chuck and Howard caught up with him, but I wouldn't say he was traumatised for all that time between 2003 - 2010. Otherwise, he probably would have left Albuquerque and the law behind.
