We take a look at the 2014 BMW 640d M Sport Gran Coupe. What is it like to drive and why is it all the car you need? Music by Epidemic Sound - www.epidemicsound.com/
Bought my 640D M Sport 2 weeks ago and already in love with it! Best car I've ever owned. Last car was the CLS Grand Edition which was beautiful. Bit no where near as quick as this. And My 2 door coupe looks even better than my merc did. 🥰
I bought one of these in August after having a 5 Series estate for a few years. Just a lovely drive. It is not a family car as my partner keeps reminding me. So less room, no powered boot etc, etc. But with a car that looks as good as the 640d, who cares 😁 lol
Like your first few lines of intro. That should be the general guidelines for car buyer out there. Thoughtful review with good presentation. I own one, 2015 640i Gran Coupe in Ash Grey. Love her since we first met.
I have literally just changed my XJ for the 6 convertible, I too miss some one the luxury of the XJ, it was a fantastic car and the car that I have owned for the longest time. The six however it a bundle of laughs, either with the top down or up, and the road presence is similar until you press the loud pedal, its fantastic, goes like a stabbed rat and handles well too. Get one.
I bought a one of these after looking at Audi, Mercs and Lexus and so pleased I chose this. You need to look around and be patient to get the right spec for you. The heads up display is an absolute must for me along with the comfort seats as I have back problems. This car is more exclusive than the rest of the bmw line up. 😉👍
Nice review..really planning to buy this car in addition to my 3 series. The only downside of this car it has only 4 seats. The middle in the back i think is not legally counted as a seat. Thank you my friend. All the best and keep blogging. God bless
Just before lockdown I was coming back from the New Forest & onto the M3 & there was a gold one in front of me. As the motorway cleared, he put his foot down & so did I... We often talk about this car or that being quicker but this is the first time (other than on a track) where neither of us could show a clear advantage or pull away from the other... A jolly 15 minutes or so at, ahem, speeds which might have landed us in trouble.... My car? A 2007 Subaru Forester 2.5XT....😊The Beemer's probably rather more plush but just goes to show...
Thank you Michael. Best car I've ever owned, wish I still had it. They were 19's. I think the 20s would have made the ride a little too hard. The proportions always looked right anyway, I'm the sort of guy that believes too small a wheel can ruin the look of a car.
Dear motorshed I've been doing research and I'm not sure whether to buy a jaguar xj or a BMW 640d, since you had both what one do u think I should take? I don't need much space but the xj just seems so luxurious in the interior but the 640d seems more fun to drive.
@@ik6104 I've seen jaguars at showrooms. I've seen my bosses 640d. I got a 2007 320d last October and can't wait to upgrade. But even when I upgrade I cant help but thi k the 6 series has a brandish interior compared to the jaguar or an s class
BMW naming convention explained as simple as possible. Odd numbers have back doors Even numbers have no back doors But the even numbered Gran Coupe's are the 4 door even numbered version of the 2 door even numbered version of the of the odd numbered 4 door version.
No reason not to, that engine is actually pretty good on fuel, if you work out the difference in monetary terms compared to a smaller capacity diesel its really not worth thinking about, even on 10k a year. Factor in the fact that the engine in the 640d would almost always be just coasting, it will be very reliable and return excellent figures on the motorway. Personally I'd go for the GC for practicality, but the coupe is still a great car.
Excellent video .... I am still considering a 6 Series (640d Coupe), but worried about needing to find 3 parking spaces if opening both the doors together.
Thank you. I know what you mean, I used to have a 3 series coupe with the same problem, you do find yourself parking a bit further away so you have a better chance of keeping free spaces next to you. Trick is to put the windows down before you get in a tight gap, pillarless doors are handy sometimes. I'd say the sacrifices are worth it, they're incredible cars. The worst thing is the height, it's like climbing out of a go kart.
@@johnroberts9845 surely depends where... as for myself, I would never swap it for a diesel... the engine noise in sport mode is too much fun. And I think the consumption is pretty decent.
As far as I know pretty reliable. I've not heard of one going and I've also had 3 BMWs of this era with the same turbos without any issues. They are pretty solid cars, and feel it too.
Thank you. Easy to do a good review of a great car. In the wet it was interesting. Being a diesel the power can sometimes come on in a bit of a lump. The gearbox managed that incredibly well though and the traction control was faultless. I honestly used to feel like it was uncrashable. I'd play with it a bit when I was on my own and push it hard, and it never failed to excite me. No other diesel has ever done that for me. I ran tyres down pretty low and still drove in the wet without issues. Forget snow though 😆
@@motorshedsteve thank you, that’s good to know. I’ve just changed from a M135i, which is dangerously bad in the wet just driving normally in a straight line on the motorway. Perhaps not enough tyre surface!? Used to have a 535D which was never an issue in the wet. Have been considering an S5 sport back, with its 4wd it’s appealing, and bigger opening on the boot is good, but not the MPG compared to the 640d. The A7, not as powerful. The 640d looks to be a fantastic package!
@@keithatkinson maybe skittish due to the shorter wheelbase? The 640 is low and wide with big tyres so always feels planted. It is the best all rounder, I also considered the A7, the dated styling and poor interior put me off what, I also considered the merc CLS but was nowhere near as good to drive. Have fun with the car!
@@keithatkinson The BiT 3.0 diesel A7 has around 313hp and actually quicker than the 640d as it did 60mph under 5seconds consistently and with little fuss. I chose the A7 in this guise before my current car and it was the perfect all rounder, especially when you consider the weather most of the year in the UK. The 640d is definitely more dynamically capable but for the regular daily driver the A7 BiT is a worthwhile consideration.
@@deadlydizzle7588 Would you rather the A7 safety or the balls out 640d? Im coming from a Mercedes e350 that's stuck on no ABS or traction due to a sensor. It's been fun but I'd rather this
Hi, how would you describe comfort levels on our UK roads, does it crash over bumps or is it fine due to adaptive suspension? Also, do you have runflat tyres. I currently have Merc 350cdi and love the smooth comfort but thinking about a 6 series.
Hi Col, I find the comfort pretty good. Not as comfy as the XJ I replaced but really not bad. The m sport is the harder ride so if comfort is a big priority the models with smaller wheels may be better. I really don't have a problem though. It's much better than the 3 series m sport. It's a great car though, absolutely loving ownership.
Hi Col, I just watched ‘ Let’s roll out ‘ vid on things he hates about his 650, one was the run flats and he changed them to normal tyres and loves the ride now, even with the things he didn’t like he still loves the car
Not bad, but not exactly a sofa either, the seat itself is very comfortable but in M Sport trim you feel the bumps a little. I rarely had 4 people in on long journeys but did a few big trips with no complaints. I am missing this car an awful lot though, it is such a great car, and i couldn't recommend one highly enough.
@@samuelgroome3387 the regular 640 has 2 doors and much less leg room. The gran coupe is longer, has 4 doors and I never had any complaints from rear seat passengers on long journeys.
Well, I’ve bought one, and have done 1400 miles in one week! My wife was more than happy in the back with my 2 year old for a 700 mile round trip. Shame about the middle seat, if you can call it that. Really can’t justify 5 in the car, but as a 4 seater I’m very happy with the car.
@@munobaby wow, that's some serious distance. Yes I feel sorry for anyone that has to spend any time in the middle 'seat'. Great car, I'm sure you'll have many pleasurable drives in it. I miss mine every day. I can see an 8 series GC in my future.
Where are the three door coupes ? I remember the old Opel Monza, Audi Coupe . . . Now the only way to get a hatchback is to settle for five doors - this car, Audi S5, S7 etc. I dont want or need five doors . . . grrrrr
Hmm I’da kept the Jag if I was you in fact your first words are “ you could be excused for not realising what this car is” why would you ever want that? Nobody would ever mistake the Jag for being anything other than a Jaaaag.
Not at all. The XJ is a great car but more of an executive barge for wafting about in. The 640 is just an absolute joy to drive every day, it feels a lot more spritely, makes a better noise and holds the road tighter.
All 6 series maybe all BMW's, from I think 2012 have artificial engine sound augmentation. If you don't like it, open the windows... Or buy Bimmer Code App and turn it off (or change it to a different car)!
