The Brooklyn Sessions
Following a long year of touring with the Beastie Boys on the Licensed to Ill tour, Tom and Adam Yauch decided that they would do something different. That something would later turn into what fans today call the Brooklyn "Demos" or the Brooklyn "Sessions."
Brooklyn was formed around late 1987 or early 1988. Its members included Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys, Tom Cushman, Daryl Jenifer of Bad Brains, and Doug E. Beans who was the drummer in Murphy's Law. Murphy's Law along with Fishbone had opened night after night for the Beastie Boys during the Licensed to Ill tour, so three out of four of them had gotten to know each other better while on the road.
Having only been paid a small percentage of what the Beastie Boys thought they were owed from Def Jam, Yauch took twenty thousand dollars and along with the other guys recorded several songs under the band name Brooklyn. The demo was shopped around to several recording labels, but was never put out commercially.
Vocals - Adam Yauch (Beastie Boys)
Guitar - Tom Cushman
Bass - Darryl Jenifer (Bad Brains)
Drums - Doug E Beans (Murphys Law)

What's crazy is this sounds sooo early 90's indie grungy but in the 80's from NYC. Waaayyy ahead of it's time.

No Dogs in Space brought me here. Amazing that Yauch & Jennifer et al. really predicted every hit alt rock band of the nineties track for track 4 years before Seattle had its pants on.

I Don't Know (Ask for Gratitude) sounds a lot like something Janes Addiction would've done, ha. This is pretty sweet. So crazy to think right after the whole License to Ill era, Yauch was doing stuff like this. Love it

No, this was AFTER tour & right after Beasties filed lawsuit against Def Jam. Yauch, Cushman, Beans never played together until sound-check on last few dates of ILL tour. Shortly later on, Yauch used money from tour to pay for studio time & recording this Demo. Daryl Jennifer also paid towards recording fees too

Dang. Been Beastie obsessed after watching the documentary on Apple. I totally would have purchased this album in the 90s. It sounds really good. Any chance their's a better quality out there to download?

Not that I know of. I only had a board cassette tape of the studio sessions and that is long gone. These had to come from Tom Cushman who was good friends with Adam. Some of these songs were from Yauchs living room that I put rough drums on and he would be the only one I know that would have masters of any of this. RIP Adam. Great guy.

There Are Some Missing Recordings Off These Tapes, & They're Sequenced Oddly. blah blah blah bitch bitch complain - It's Great Hearing Them Again.

@@pennylpsproductions1849 It's too bad you guys weren't able to polish this shit up. I gotta say man, your guitar playing was great on this, and the songs are definitely ahead of their time. Too bad Adam wasn't comfortable enough with his voice to ever revisit these. Anyway, glad I found this shit, and it must have been some cool ass shit to be apart of. Peace!

Bad Brains stand to hardcore as Beastie Boys stand to hip hop. Black guys doing what is possibly the best hc ever (a genre typically played by white guys). White guys doing what is possibly the best hip hop ever (a genre typically played by black guys). Barriers do not exist in music.
