What happened to William Wallace after his victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge? Where did he go? How was Wallace captured? And how did he die?
William Wallace - Scotland's greatest hero. But who was he really? And where did he come from?
(With thanks to Stirling County RFC for allowing me to film and GP for the drone footage.)

If they hadn't died and could get their hands on them they did the same to the men who signed King Charles I death warrant. That was 350 years later and his son took the trouble to attend the executions in person. I gather he was rather fond of his father and took it personal

Bravo Robert! Incredible piece of history. Okay I’ll admit that I almost fell out of my chair when you showed the view from the top of the cliff and the height you were at but very much appreciate what lengths you’ll go to bring us a story. Scotland has such an incredible history with some true warriors that we still look up to. Isn’t that wonderful. You are truly gifted in the way that you’re able to bring all this history, folklore and stories to us. Thank you.

This was...I'm....I don't have words. You brought Wallace to life in a way no others have managed. Not even Mel, himself, and I ADORE that movie. Being half crazy Ferguson, I feel more than a tiny bit of national pride. And the other half--the crazy Irish woman--wanted to invade a small country, and take it, in Wallace's name, but that's a story for another day. Yes, he stood for the idea of freedom, and that is definitely the more important legacy. Thank you for sharing this.

@@scotlandunpluggedHappens every time I listen to Óró sé dé Bheatha 'Bhaile, by Seo Linn. It's an Irish Gaelic folk song, that seems like an amazing song to invade a small nation, to. 🤣🤣 Scotland the Brave (played on bagpipes) does something similar. I'm thinking it must be genetic memory, because I'm really more of a pacifist.

I really enjoy your historic videos. One of my ancestors (James, Duke of Montrose) I believe at one time owned Sterling Castle. He met a similar fate as William Wallace but his body parts were distributed to family members as was the custom in the early 1600's. His head, however, was left on a spike on the gate at St. Giles for 11 years. After 11 years the King of England asked that all body parts be returned and he was laid to rest in an alcove at St. Giles. The man who called for his execution, the Earl of Argyll is buried on the opposite side of the church. My Grandfather immigrated to America in the early 1900's. Love your videos!!!

Well done! I like your conclusion to this series very much. It's interesting to know that as much as Braveheart got so many things so very wrong, that there are folk in the world who drew inspiration from, as you put it, the idea of Sir William Wallace. If you like historical fiction, a countryman of yours, Jack Whyte wrote three novels, The Guardians of Scotland, the first of which is The Forest Laird about William Wallace. The second was about Robert the Bruce, and the third was about Andrew Murray. He's an historian, and in the intro to the books he writes that so little is known of Wallace, and for the sake of the story he had to make stuff up. It's a terrific story, all three of them are. I first encountered his work in The Camulod Chronicles... in the UK I believe the series is called A Dream of Eagles, the first book of which is The Skystone. He was trying to figure out how a man like King Arthur could have come to power and to explain various aspects of the legend. It's a cracking good series! Arthur doesn't enter the story until the end of the third book (of nine)!

The greatest contribution of Wallace is his spirit to stand for freedom and keep the fire burning in the hearts of Mankind. In the US he is well regarded by all Scots whose leneage extends back to 'The Clearings', as well as those who immigrated later. Wallace had a global, as well as a generational impact.

Coming from the United States, we get to indulge in many many freedoms that other countries dream about. I've recently learned that I'm 38% Scottish, clan Lindsay/lindsey. I've been chatting with a friend who lives in Leeds England and just from our conversation I understand the mass amounts liberty we have here. It saddens me to know that the freedoms we take for granted here the many luxuries we live and to know the struggles of our kin is heartbreaking. I support the independence of Scotland, I believe she could do better for herself beyond the greedy hands of England.

We don’t know many things about Edward Wallace, but this we do know. He seriously did some things that got right up Edward Long Shanks’ nose for Edward to release such vitriol on Wallace when he finally got his hands on him. So from amongst all the Scottish myths and fables about Edward Wallace, you know for sure he made a difference of some kind. He certainly was a mover and shaker of his time. It’s said by some historians that he was given up by Robert the Bruce. So there’s that to show his level of importance.

Another lesser known victim of the same gruesome fate was Sir Simon Fraser. A slightly more typical example of the changing loyalties of Scots nobles as he fought both for and against Edward I, then teamed up with Wallace to fight the English, switched loyalties once more and then finally joined forces with Robert the Bruce before being taken captive. Edward I decided that all supporters of Bruce were traitors and so off to Smithfield Fraser was taken and his head ended up on a spike next to Wallace's.
