The BRUTAL Execution Of Henry VIII's LAST Victim - Henry Howard

Henry VIII today is known for being an incredibly brutal King who would happily order the executions of thousands of his own people inside England. However the Tudor monarch would even execute some of his closest advisors and friends, and also a number of the highest class inside Tudor society. His final victim would be Henry Howard, the Earl of Surrey who would be executed days before the infamous King would died.
Henry Howard is known for being a man who made many enemies inside the royal court, had a temper but also was a talented poet. He would travel on many military expeditions but following a failed battle in France, he would return to England and was subject to the King's suspicious mind. Henry VIII in his dying days would consider Henry Howard a threat, and began to become suspicious of him and paranoid that Howard was trying to kill the King and usurp him.
Because of this, Henry VIII managed to convince many at court of the Earl of Surrey's supposed guilt. From this Henry Howard was then sentenced to death and was executed in brutal fashion on Tower Hill in front of a huge crowd. His father Thomas Howard, the Duke of Norfolk was also sentenced to death for treason, but would escape his fate as a day before the execution was due to take place, King Henry VIII would die. Because of this, Henry Howard the Earl of Surrey would become the final person to be executed by Henry VIII.

How to survive the Tudor era under Henry the VIII? Don’t be a Howard, nor a Boleyn... If you were a women, pray for your name to not be Katherine (Catherine). In general, don’t be anywhere near the king.

Not really he left lots of ancesters alive, even the one who use to shout at Henry and was sleeping with Ann boleyn he even wrote Henry was a mule. Henry also tried to marry my great 9x grandma. She had a bad temper, he had already married two of her cousins, (fair enough they did die) so he married her aunt instead and she out lived him. It was his daughter Mary who was worse to us. Thank goodness for Elizabeth.

It would be almost suicidal to be a prominent member of Henry VIII court during the last paranoid years of his life - very difficult to trust anyone and make real friends, together with a tyrannical King, sat at the top with the power over life and death. Frightening times.

And yet, in his final illness, with death imminent, Henry became terrified of the afterlife, lamenting his bloody, greed-driven, reign and confessing his sins to a priest. It is a shame he did not find such a change of heart before he slaughtered so many.

Leventry Beria may have come to the same conclusion. (Chief of police/enforcer under Stalin) He too was responsible for needless, unlawful executions and murders of hundreds of thousands, and was also a sexual predator. Just prior to his execution, it was reported he fell on his knees in tears, screaming and begging for his life. Yet, during the times he murdered so many, that never seemed to bother him. I think we sometimes wonder if it was "just" the fear of impending death, but also fear of the possibility he would be condemned to hell after it. We will never know. We assume he was an atheist. But the "clarification" of an immediate execution tends to "clarify" the thoughts of the individual. It is possible he was thinking about this as well. I wish his executioners would have asked him prior to shooting him in the forehead. I would have been interesting to hear his reply. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

I had never heard of this guy before. I knew of his father the Duke of Norfolk and that he narrowly avoided execution because Henry had died. He was rather foolish but it is a pity he was executed. If only the execution had been put back a little later, he probably would have escaped it.

@paulroberts3639
@paulroberts3639 3 года назад
Yeah, people did stuff like that. But sometimes they’d postpone the execution, torture the person, cut out their tongue. Only then to execute them in a more painful way. Or worse, punish their family, seize their property titles, lands, etc. So their kids had nothing. If someone did start saying offensive things (offensive to the king or even the church) they would usually get beaten on the spot to stop them before they said too much. Mostly people knew that if they said anything back at their execution, that their family would suffer. So they just shut up, knowing that the king/emperor was a dick, but things could be worse.

I have always been a fan of Surrey,especially after reading the wonderful book by Jessie Childs😄Strange thing in this case as in the case of Anne Boleyn:both were proven innocent. Surrey was not guilty inder the indictment because he had a right to present himself with Mowbray ancestory armory. But Henry VIII was paranoid about the succession and Surrey was not beiing careful in the presence of a suspicious sickly king😗

Henry VIII....the king who should never have been. Invented a religion, invented stories of treason, ordered in most beheadings that the axe was to be blunt, guilty of murdering women and became the ugliest reigning king of all time. He became so obese that he had carpenters make a hoist just so he could mount his (poor) horse. Was utterly unhygienic and died a miserable death.....thank God we've moved on. The Queen today is the most beautiful, loyal, respected Head of State ever....major respect.

Iambic pentameter, our guide throughout our language. The original language used chiasms . Set u in a pyramid like structure. If A as the beginning, as it stepped up, the B part aligned with the B on the down swing, as did the A at the beginning. A simple catch phrase to make it easier to see would be _ A light upon my path and a lamp upon my feet. Although they say almost the same thing, yet it kinda redescribes the original phrase. The entire scripture is laid out that way.

Well, not really- his father did most of that, & with far less executions- even some people who literally tried to take the throne were merely imprisoned, & he tried to keep the nobles in check financially, like involuntary good behaviour bonds that'd literally bankrupt them :D The Wars of the Roses ended long before Henry VIII took the throne, & his dissolution of the monasteries was one of the worst things you could do to the people: that'd been their charity, medical help, education... Very good video, but please don't tone drone. Your natural delivery, when you speak it, is just fine.

I'm not sure you understand the meaning of "brutal", either that or the clickbait is strong.

It would be cool if you could find some of the actual people killed by extreme torture methods in antiquity

As cruel as Henry was, I don't know of any person that he personally killed with his own hands. Does anyone know someone he killed personally. Let me know please. David from London in the Philippines

Why is Sir Thomas More not listed? I'm pretty sure Mary would have executed him as a threat because of his claims to the thrown

St. Thomas More never said he was a contender for the Throne of England.

Thomas More had no royal blood. He was the son of a lawyer and the grandson of a baker.

While informative, I find your video's to be misleading. Please stop headlining with "Brutal" . To be clear beheading was actually seen as a more compassionate way to deal with people in those times.. hanging was for the commoners and hung, drawn and quartered was a terrible fate for any to endure. But to say the "brutal" execution of someone by beheading, when in actual fact this was viewed as leniency is abit of a stretch.
