During the reign of Henry VIII, one of the most serious rebellions that the Tudor King faced was from the Pilgrimage of Grace. The North of England rose up to combat many of the King's religious changes brought about by his split from Rome, and by one of his Chief Advisor's Thomas Cromwell. Cromwell's dissolutions of the monasteries were a particular point of contention, and the North of England rose up to rebel against the King.
The Pilgrimage of Grace was one of the biggest Tudor rebellions, and was led by lawyer Robert Aske. This protest sought to bring an end to the religious changes Henry outlined brought about by his divorce from Catherine of Aragon and his subsequent break from Catholicism. Robert Aske was an incredibly good leader and he managed to convince dozens of thousands to join the revolt, which successfully occupied and sieged castles and towns. In York they even managed to reverse the religious changes that Henry had put in place.
Henry VIII even met with Robert Aske and showed him respect, however after a second meeting Aske was imprisoned and taken to the Tower of London. He was later found guilty of treason and was sent back to York (his hometown) to be hanged in chains and executed. From the walls of Clifford's Tower, Aske was brutally executed infront of a large crowd. So join us today as we look at 'The Brutal Execution Of Robert Aske.'

It is amazing isn't it? Kings like Henry, the Black Plague, deaths of people, especially children ,from diseases, the wars and battles like Towton( 28,000 at one time), The continuing wars like War of the Roses and The Hundred Year War, Yes I think we are pretty lucky that our ancestors survived , and that we are here now.

Indeed, Robert Aske was far too nice and easy going to come up against someone as devious and cruel as Henry. I believe from hanging to death was in excess of a week.

Henry did the right thing. One had to pay as a warning to not try this again. This way he did bring that message across. We can argue if he picked the right man or not...but that is about it. Henry used a tactic to catch the others and stop the rebellion by making that traitor believe they are " friends". Only a fool would have been so very dumb to NOT know Henry will crack down on them. He took care of them and he was right in doing so. You can not have people going against your laws, if u r a king. Doesn`t work that way.

@@blakegriffin384 he had two of his wives executed Anne Boleyn for treason but he actually wanted Jane Seymour who was younger and prettier, Catherine Howard also for treason, he wouldn't have capable of fathering a child by then so it wasn't because she could not give him a son, it's possible she cheated on him as she was in love and engaged to someone else when she was forced to marry Henry, there was no need for Jane Seymour to take a lover Henry had already fathered children it was a son that he wanted, and Jane gave him one but died shortly afterwards

We often forget that we are in fact the result of dozens of generations and selective breeding by violence. Its one reason why we should be careful condemning people and cultures of our times. Further we don't have to go back very far in our cultures to find ugliness. I'm Australian and a few years ago the Indonesians executed 2 Australians for organizing a drug shipment. The main reason for their execution was internal Indonesian politics. In Australia we had a huge campaign condemning the death penalty. The Indonesians ignored us simply citing that a few years earlier we had remained silent when they executed the 3 ringleaders of the Bali Bombing. We also forgot our own history. The last man hanged in Australia was not only innocent of the crime he was hanged for but the authorities knew it and the Premier of Victoria (the state where he was hanged) acknowledged in cabinet papers (recently released) that it was done so he would look tough on crime for the next election which was only months away. Sir Henry Bolte ended up winning the election in a landslide, was knighted and had one of Melbourne's major bridges named after him. If you are of Anglo-Saxon descent (and I am) you don't have to go back many generations to find ancestors who worked a 6 day week. On Sundays they went to church in the morning to learn about forgiveness and then went to the afternoon executions to learn about justice. These days in the middle east its generally Friday lunchtime for the same stuff. We forget the last time the French Guillotined anyone was in the 1970s. We forget that the drug cocktail the Americans use was actually developed by a pair of Nazi doctors who experimented on orphaned boys. Donald Trump just ignored 200+ years of American Presidential tradition by allowing an execution to happen during his lame duck stage. Up until now they have either pardoned or commuted or left it to the incoming President. Donald Trump is the first President ever to allow an execution to proceed during his lame duck time.

I always say that to my friend when we encounter one story after another about the myriad ways people hurt one another, and I'm not just referring to bodily harm. You see violence everywhere, especially on on-line message boards that are often fuelled by vitriol rather than any semblance of compassion.

@@mggailitis7231 I don't think its that we hate each other so much as I think its more like we hate the fact that we feel the world is unjust and no matter how hard we work or how hard we try we just know that it more often than not it wont matter. We see the world we live in as unjust and watching a criminal get executed brings back a sense of justice. I think we are a frustrated species with the state of our own affairs and public executions have been a way for societies to collectively get a sense that justice is being exercised in a world we feel is inherently unjust. It something like that or we really are a deplorable species racked with sociopathic behavior. I'd like to think we are worth redeeming, if we can find a way to do it before we kill the planet (which we are doing). Mark Blyth the Socio-economist from Brown U. and Erica Lonergan just wrote a book called Angrynomics. They were looking into the current world state where so many people are just angry. They have this idea/notion/concept that we (the bulk of us) are angry that the figurative 1% have gamed the system so far that they can't lose and we can't win. Its as if they have us trapped in a casino where we are forced to play and all the games are rigged. We know its rigged but we also know the 1% occasionally let some of us win, so we keep playing.

@@tonywilson4713 I agree with you 100%. I used the term as an exaggeration for effect. We, as a society create conditions that makes it easier to hate. For example, it really saddens and angers me when people exploit and take advantage of others for their own personal gain. I have no problem with people accumulating vast amounts of wealth, but I do have a problem when the people who contributed to the effort cannot make a living wage. I could go on, but I'm sure you get my point. Also, I'm not an academic who has studied questions like these, but I find it interesting that countries in the northern hemisphere -- e.g. Sweden, Finland, etc.. -- are way more socialistic than where I live. It seems to me that perhaps the collective notion comes from a common understanding that it's us against nature; therefore we need to help one another to get by. I don't know; I'm just spit-balling here. But one thing I do know is I'm not made for the rampant capitalist culture in which we live. So I guess that means we don't all hate one another.

@@jeeperspeepers8323 Stalin may have been poisoned by NKVD officers close to him. The theory or accusation is that Stalin was planning another massive "purge" like one he orchestrated in the 1930's. The high level officials who knew of this plan knew very well that rank or "friendship" meant nothing to Stalin. So in defense of their own lives, and millions of others, they took out Stalin. I'm not sure how much hard evidence is for the story, but its very plausible. It had been a few years since people were being slaughtered by the millions, so a "purge" was overdue. Worried officials were perfectly placed to carry out a poison assassination AND cover it up with a perfectly believable cover story of illness AND have control over destruction of any evidence. Plus this plot had the benefit of warning Stalin's replacement "this could happen to you", which is probably why Khrushchev launched a big anti-Stalin crusade. Ironically, Khrushchev was a bloody mass murderer for Stalin, making sure the daily killing quotas were met.

One of the English gibbets was described as "crueler by far than the sufferings of Christ on the cross." The victim was placed into a gibbet where all the weight of his body landed on two spikes through the center of his feet. Then he was left to starve in horrendous pain, the victim would scream in pain for days until finally dying.

I am not a religious person, but you would think Britain would feel shame for the way they treated the Catholics in their Country. Henry the 8th did not brake sway from the Catholic church for an important reason, but because he wanted an annulment to marry again and hope to produce a son. I will agree that maybe the Pope should have granted him an anullment, because a few years earlier the Pope called him The Defender of the Faith. My hats off to the British who stayed Catholic they went thru a lot, but refused to convert to a Protestant religion.

Before we are so quick to judge our ancestors cruelties we should consider that many prisoners today spend years in tortuous isolation. We have not changed nearly as much as we should like

The Podcaster also forgets there was no modern police force or standing army, so maybe punishments had to be brutal in a society in which the State and its power was invested in one person.

Hilarious. Have you seen inside a prison? I have (not as an inmate, lol). Prisoners are coddled. Library. Recreation yards. Basketball. Weights. Baseball. Bands. Commissary. Free Health care. Big screen TVs. And we release them back into society as muscled-up thugs. Pretty soon, guards talking in a harsh voice or hurting a prisoners feelings will be “cruel and unusual punishment “.

Random question, sorry: Is the correct word 'Clit' or 'Click'? I've always called it a click but recently I was playing the ol' Jackfinger on this girlie's hamm-sammy until it turnt a feverish peppy purple when I said to her, ' Girl, you got some mega lippage and a gi-normous click!'. She asked me what a click was and I replied, 'The click is your bodies golden snitch and she wears a little meat hoodie'. She asked if I was talking about a clit with a T and laughed at me, now I'm confused. I dont know which is correct, click or clit so I now instead just call it a Guinea-horn to be on the safe side.

It's interesting how many claims were made for a crownship under the 'in your face' ploy of Might is Right. History seems to have been replete with over-bearing psychopaths who sat on thrones through being cruel and callous. In reality they had no more right to be there than anyone else but used force to establish their kingdoms and lineage. Henry 8th. was sadly just another unpredictable, neurotic despot who was obsessed with keeping his crown and distrustful of everybody.
