Viking berserkers rush into a town and villagers scatter. Many are cut down with axes, spears, and arrows. From Lindisfarne to Seville, these lightning raids are unpredictable, brutal, and strategically aimed at vulnerable targets. For many coastal regions, Vikings raids bring an inevitable massacre. Today, we look at how best to survive a Viking raid.
Whether fighting for mere earthly plunder or glory in Valhalla, the #Vikings were situated in a Scandinavian society that offered unique conditions and motivations for raiding. We use as a case study the Viking attack on Moorish Spain and Portugal as an illustration of the drivers and vulnerabilities of Viking raiders. We lastly ask what happened to the Vikings? Were they mere assassins? Did the fearsome Norse raiders disappear in one final, Ragnarok-esque battle? And yes, we produced this history documentary in anticipation of the release of Assassin's Creed Valhalla!

I enjoyed seeing the Viking menace with a different set of eyes outside of the usual and familiar christian and northern European locations. The long reach of the Vikings at their peak (all the way down to and around the Mediterranean is amazing and frightening at the same time. The ability of their long ships to handle the open ocean as well as shallow inland waters made them far more mobile and far faster than most of their land bound opponents.

@@SamTheManWhoCanTwice nah bro isis are terrorists and vikingr were travellers. trader. and even raiders. no real objective to spread neither ideology nor faith just wanted honor and great tales to be spoken about them after they reach valhalla. its also a religion most likely created from fierce competitions and fears of getting raided yourself so the religion told them to fight. women. children and men would have to fight to death or become slaves or just executed with no honor. norse society was actually really philosophical they just didnt write stuff down but from mythology and characters in their beliefs id say they were very smart thinkers and workmen and honed skills to the outmost potential. they even created their own version of democracy still in use in modern day scandinavia called altinget/folketinget " a voting ceremony in wich every persons vote is equal to the matter" its just more commonly credited to the greeks. also specific places for feuds need solving like a big rune stone in a forest clearing where everyday people went to settle disputes over a standing talk with no weapons. there were vikingr raiders who took out on journeys under no king to bring their own fortune back home wich is different from the the actual kings armies. theres also the jomsvikingr of jomsborg who were self established like other vikingr but were so organised and skilled and well equipped that the local jarl had no say in what they did and did not dare put taxes on them. these jomsvikingr were also hired by the danish king for warfare like alot of other vikingr warriors did. but remember a vikingr is a term for adventurers and warriors of the sea and not just pirates. the hatred towards heathens were common long before and continued into the viking age. its just plain good old racism in other words

@@SamTheManWhoCanTwice well you clearly dont understand what i meant. isis is an ideology and therefore is classified as terrorism with ideological goals. they try to terrorise them. norse raiders werent raiding or killing more than other europeans, they simply were hated for the fact they didnt fight for christ. you can turn it around and say that the christian europe were more like isis than the native heathens when "converting" scandinavia. or the fact that the danelaw was broken by anglo-saxons killing the danes on a lørdag AKA saturday. the bathing day. when the danes had taken a break from farming and fishing they went to the rivers to wash themselves and the english took advantage of the fact that the men were easy prey and went and killed as many danes as possible. they werent seen as humans by the english kings and were looked down on as they simply were different. now the anglo saxons dont even originate in the british isles wich just supports my saying that the true terrorisers werent small groups of warriors from the north but the impending doom of christianity killing and hating everything that isnt christians and ended up torturing and killing thousands of norwegians in the name of conversion and blackmailed the danes and swedes for rights to travel and trade. essentially saying " if you dont do your killings and raidings in the name of the church then you shall have your economy starved and your people weak untill we finish you off" fuck off with that isis shit. isis my ass. i thought it was pretty clear christianity kills of cultures and people more than even isis could fully achieve. so no. norse culture was beautifull to the very last drop. the fact most people still think of them as somehow more brutal than the rest of europe is crazy to me. christian scandinavia did more discrimination than pagan scandinavia ever did. its just easier to blame the pagans back then and now. our nordic excellence were just feared because we were able to do so much damage with so little men. remember these are just big row boats they arrived in. and they would row away again if the negotiations were succesfull. isis doesnt care about that and neither did christians. christians just simply hated anything different. not every individual christian but the church itself supported propaganda written about how dirty and disgusting my people were despite us being cleaner and having more equal rights than anywhere else in europe at the time. christians. history is written by the victors and not the ones that lose. especially not when said lost culture and religion didnt passed things down orally

odd thing about Vikings is they never had to deal with counter attacks from the countries they attacked and invaded. it wasn't until 1940 when a European nation attacked and crushed the Viking homelands. it is also ironic after attacking countries at will for centuries the Vikings missed out on the Age of Discovery and watched their former victims like France, England and Russia become major powers. meanwhile Scandinavia became an insignificant backwater.

Jackson Crawford explains in a video that it was a bit of a misconception that the Norse didn't know about the rest of Europe before the Viking Age. Especially Denmark which is part of the mainland section. Despite what the show Vikings depicted, the Vikings knew where England, France, and Germany and Russia were. That is not to say that they didn't take massive gambles with exploring the middle east, Iceland, Greenland, and America though.

@@HistoryDose you do not know what you are talking about! the reason why the vikings raided monasteries and Christians was to stop Christianity! not for wealth! Charlemagne executed thousands of heathen! who refused to bow to Christianity! Oh, you can imagine what the Nordic people thought about it. Heathen wrote little to nothing about his story. but the Christians wrote it all down. and thus there are some dishonest stories that come up! Christianity is full of propaganda. anyway foolish to think that the viking time started due to silver! the nordic people had already traded with england and the rest of europe and large parts of the meeting for hundreds of years before the so-called viking era!

I think one part you missed about the viking raids alongside Bjorn Ironside in 858 was a mass destruction on the viking side. Sources suggest that the Emir of Cordoba did indeed defeat the vikings at sea. Out of the 30 vessels of viking fleets that that journeyed through the Mediterranean, looting various cities, only 3 vessels returned their coast in the North. The more you know :)

It's a personal choice. The ones who pray to and obey God in their personal lives are the ones who benefit from God's will personally, which most importantly, means making heaven their home. I think one of the reasons why the Emirate of Cordba was able to easily defend against the Vikings after the first raid, was because their domain was more centralized compared to other Western European realms, they also had higher military tech, thanks to the adoption of Greek Fire. There were also religious volunteer warriors who guarded the coastal forts which gave birth to the "Ribat" mentality, where religious volunteers established brotherhoods, centered around forts along the frontiers, where they would focus on religious matters and military defense of what they deemed as "Dar al-Islam" or abode of peace, which arguably had an impact on the Catholic military orders that would be established hundreds of years later.

Prior to the 2012 London Olympics, new roads were being constructed at Ridgeway Hill in southern England in preparation for the games. I live not far away from the site. The workers discovered human remains when digging. The area was excavated and they discovered over 50 bodies, all young men that had been decapitated and thrown into a large pit, the heads in one pile and the bodies in another. Analysis of the bones found they were of Scandinavian origin and from the late 900’s, a time when Viking raids were frequent. It’s believed they were a Viking raiding party that had been caught and executed. Three heads were missing indicating they had been taken and possibly displayed on spikes. One of the men had his teeth filed down to sharp points like a cat, perhaps to look more menacing. Crazy to think what used to go on hundreds of years ago right where we live now

In Old Norse, there are two words, both nouns: a víkingr is a person, while víking is an activity. So calling them scandinavians would be more historically accurate. Nice seeing some of old English history going out to more people though, gives a better idea of what we went through before the empire was even a twinkle in someone's eye.

History Dose, I'd love it if you touched on the ancient Gaelic warriors like the Gallowglass or King Brian Boru. My ancestors were forced off their island of Gigha in the Hebrides and forced to become mercenaries called Gallowglass. Gallowglass were kindof like ronin. They traveled as lauded, mercenary warriors who had Nordic / Gaelic blood. They came from the islands of Scotland to Ulster Ireland to fight in wars for gold. Like their Viking ancestors, money talked. In fact, the word 'Gallowglass' means 'Foreign Gael' in the Gaelic language. That's because all Scotts on the islands west of Scotland had Norse blood. Many vikings intermingled with the native Gaels of those islands. After awhile, my ancestor settled down from fighting. And around this time, the Irish weren't happy with their Scottish cousins living on their lands in the north. He and his family made the hard decision of moving to the colony of the US in South Carolina. I returned back to Europe. There's a lot of history to my family and our great culture. What say you?
