The auto refresh rate won't work unless your TV set reports the same 120 hertz. So your TV set must support a 120-hertz refresh rate for it to switch automatically.

Right. Everything in your video chain needs to support hdmi 2.1. I was just curious as to why the device supported 120hz if you can’t game on it.

Great video. Lots of detail on that item. I'll probably still get an Nvidia Shield but it's nice to know that there are other items out there. Hopefully Nvidia comes out with a new model soon that they can lower the price on now the computer parts are a lot cheaper

Nvidia is over rated, unless you're a gamer. I have used Onn boxes and Chrome devices that worked just as well as Shield. This Rock Tek is very smooth, plays and loads fast. Like any other device, you have to do your maintenance, closing unused apps, etc, cache cleared, etc. A little pricey, but right there with the Shield

I have this device. It's okay. My biggest problem with it is, that if you let it stay on and turn off your TV screen, it will freeze up and you have to restart it. I've reset it to see if that would fix it, but it doesn't. Otherwise it's very good.

Yup. I’m having the exact same issue. Happens a few times daily. Didnt start happening until after I did my review. Its pretty annoying and frustrating. But otherwise great device.

Good overview. Does this do any 4k upscaling? I'm assuming Nvidia has a leg up with their 4K AI upscaling.

Thank you! I’ll have to reach out to see if it supports your standard upscaling, I havent seen any specs stating that it does, but yea Nvidia 2019 version def has the leg up with that AI upscaling for sure.

I just got the same box. The only problem is I could not connect my USB thumbdrive and get it to play my downloaded movies. It kept saying my thumb drive needed to be formatted. But my thumb drive is already formatted to exfat, so this was really disappointing to me

Hmmm. Have you tried a different hard drive and see if you get the same error?

@@hatoraidcowboy I have two different thumb drives, a Sandisk and a Toshiba. Both are formatted to exfat, neither of them works on the box but works just fine on the PC. I really like this box and I wanted it to work, so I did a ton of research. Apparently smart TVs and Android boxes do not accept exfat and ntfs. Which really sucks. But this box claims to accept both exfat and NTFS. I'm really sad about this because it's a great box, it plays dolby vision, and I should be able to watch all my downloaded movies on it, but I can't...

Hi there! I just wanted to check back in with you. How are you liking the box thus far? Do you have any issues with the Dolby Vision? I have to manually turn it on in the settings every morning. The DV resets to OFF if I switch the power off in the evening (including the power plug).

I've seen three or four RU-vid videos on this box, but no one has mentioned whether it will take a USB-connected SSD for additional storage. Does anyone who might have it know if that's possible?

That’s a good question. Problem is I dont use usb-c drives and dont have any usb-c drives for media. The only usb-c drive I have is formatted in ExFat and used for editing on my mac

Good overview but I’m not seeing a compelling reason to drop my 2017 Nvidia Shield. I’ve got the hard drive stuff long ago figured out and that was THE reason I got a Shield. All the other stuff/features is nuance I don’t need (in the true sense of “need”).

Yea the SHIELD still beats it, but if someone wants to spend less it comes pretty close. They still needs to work out some bugs though.

@@hatoraidcowboy Local from PLEX. It will direct stream, but audio is silent unless I swap the stream if one is 2ch avail. TrueHD is fine thankfully.

I did have some intermittent audio with Dolby Atmos & DTS:X. I havent used it in a while so not sure if they resolved it. Rocktech said there was an update so might see if you need to update yours

Your comments about frames rates, Dolby vision, etc., struck a nerve. Not about the G2 box, but the state of the overall home video experience... I've noticed that since I moved up to a 4K projector and 4K receiver (lightning strike did in the 1080 setup, RIP)...things have gotten a little (OK, a LOT) more complicated w/respect to correct settings. More than once I've ended up looking at a blank screen, trying to figure what setting on what device - that something isn't happy about. Sorting things out between the receiver, projector, all the streamers...almost makes me want to just stay at 1080 at a low frame rate where everything is happy (and I'm an electrical engineer to boot!). Maybe the days of 'turn it on and watch' are history? Honestly, I'm more impressed by 1080 HDR than 4K w/o HDR, even on my large projector screen. If my wife had to fiddle with things like I did during the initial setup...no doubt the entire setup would have been on Craigslist before the night was over. Back to the G2: Thanks for the review! I have a Shield (can't say I'm a fan of the Android GUI) and I just use it as a OTA Plex DVR server. Did you try using external storage on the G2/Plex setup (sorry if I missed that)? Just curious since I use a NAS for PLEX storage and that seems more reliable than plugging a hard drive into the Shield. Wondered if the G2 had the same issue.

In adding, millions(billions) of peasants like myself may never be able to afford any of those luxury items. Meanwhile, the Caviar Class enjoys life to the fullest. Instead of me working a 3rd job to afford the best streamer or those other devices, I think I'll just remain happy with my budget 4k BluRay player and second hand disks. Ya know, It will be a sad day when I get to lazy to tell my kids what movie to put in the player next!

@@hatoraidcowboy The only benefit to owning/using the Kscape system is the "Kscape team remastering" of the audio and video content that is supposed to make the films better for playing within the HT/cinema platforms. That is what I have heard from the proponents of Kscape. True/untrue? I don't know. As far as ripping disks onto PLEX and such is great, but first we have to be able to buy quality made disks. I've had many issues with bad disks lately. What does someone do about that problem? Seems like disks now have an expiration date. Like a Mission Impossible recording that burns up after playback. Poof - trash. Might be best to mount a bird feeder near a window and watch that for quality entertainment at home. Hahahaha! Far cheaper - less headaches. hahaha!
