Even after all that they manage clearly be out of playoffs in 2018 and 2019 season. But I guess current Oilers situation shows that there is hope for Sabres. All the best to Sabres fans!

Pens fan here. The Sabres showed a lot of promise and a lot of fight coming off the losing streak through to season’s end. They’ve managed convincing wins against all top 4 teams in the East. Without Eichel no less. The potential is there

I actually clicked on your link thinking that you were going to put the team down for the season and I was really pleasantly surprised that you mentioned all the crazy things that made this year so bad. The only thing I disagree with is being happy the season is over. I have really enjoyed this team lately! Honestly since Granato took over it’s been a great to see their effort and drive while in that situation. Either way I am looking forward to next year ! Good luck
@@jcb312 ... not much hope coming next season seeing that not even adding Hall and Stall make it better. Skinner, Eichel, need to both leave. Try getting some young talent who don't have a losing attitude. Eichel and soon Dahlin are damaged goods.
If we won half the games in the losing streak, we would be where Philly is. If Krueger was fired, they would have been a little higher in the standings. Either keep Granato or get an offensive coach with experience.

Thanks for staying mostly positive during, yet another, trying year. There were several times when I thought you might just break down and cry but you stayed strong (on camera, at least). My team has gone through lean years too and it's painful...but as long as those Leafs don't win, I'm good at the end of the day.

6 goalies? That’s pretty good! 2018-2019 my Flyers set an NHL record by using 8 goalies. (Michal Neuvirth, Mike McKenna, Cal PIckard, Brian Elliott, Carter Hart, Alex Lyon, Anthony Stolarz, and Cam Talbot.) We feel your pain.

I give Granato props... his coaching tenure started off rocky given they could not practice much during the tail end of the losing streak because of COVID protocols. But once they broke that losing streak, they were just below a .500 club (9-11-2) for the most part of the second half of the season and were playing so much better despite no Eichel or Ullmark, and many of the UFA veterans shipped out. The kids did alright.
The thing I like best about the Sabres is that the recency(sp?) effect is coming to a point where people are talking less about how bad the Oilers organization has been.
Jack Eichel missed 35 games this year, Jake McCabe missed 43 games, Linus Ullmark missed 36 games and we had to start 6 different games. We played better with Don Granato as the Head Coach. He should be the permanent Head Coach next season.
As a non Sabres fan looking at the team from the outside, one thing the team needs more than anything else is a massive upgrade to its scouting dept. If your team struggles for as long as the Sabres has it is a very good bet that the team has been a disaster at the draft table. You look at the teams that have been steady contenders for a long time and there is a good bet the team is one of the better teams at scouting, drafting and developing. Obviously if the owner is focused on saving money over scouting, then he is getting what he has paid for.
100%. The fact that the Sabres have been horrible at drafting over the past like 15 years and then the Pegulas literally fire all their scouts without replacing them proves that they really don't have a good grasp on what it will take to have long term success.
Sabres future is looking very bright with all these collected picks and now another top 3. Oilers went through a similar drought and they're finally coming out of it hot

Some positives to take away...The playoff drought won't last forever(spoken like a Canuck's fan). The Sabres played a LOT better under the new coach. I'm a lifelong Canucks fan, so I envy you. Our season is going to last a while longer, but we will likely earn the same number of wins the Sabres will earn in the meantime.

Despite the season being a disaster, I think there were some positives. Ullmark was REALLY good when healthy, and I think Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen showed some real promise. Mittelstadt, Cozens, Asplund, Ruotsalainen, Bjork, Bryson, Reinhart all had solid seasons. And Seeing Dahlin turn his game around when Krueger was fired, was great as well. Hopefully, things will come together for next season
Don't feel too bad. The Oilers got 5(!!!!) #1 overall picks in 8 years and even then their last 6 years haven't been stellar. A proper rebuild takes more than just good players. I think scouting is #1 followed by coaching.
Hey Mel--we've got good hockey here in Denver--and you'd look good in an Avs jersey--sure hope things get better for the Sabres over the next few seasons.
I hope I'm wrong but I can't see this getting better. What player is gonna want to go there and if you don't have support the rookies are likely to flop. I'm worried about a rookie GM building a team that I can't see a single free agent wanting to go to so he's going to have to over pay for veterans to try and fill the lineup. Player development is an issue drafting is an issue. Hitting a first round pick isn't hard but seconds and further picks are floundering. Again I really hope I'm wrong but I don't see this getting much better next season. Good luck Buffalo I truly hope this next season is better.
I think there is something to look forward to next season. With all the Rumors that are flying around with Eichel, Reinhart and Risto there is massive changes coming to this roster. Lets also add in the fact that the Sabres will be either keeping Don Granato or hiring another coach. I think the move here is to keep Granato and trade all 3 of Eichel Reinhart and Risto with young players that can move this team forward. So first I will look at the first round pick we have. If Beniers is there at the pick I think Buffalo needs to select him period. This will give the Sabres the most flexibility with trading Eichel like for example if NYR throw the most at the Sabres and you have Beniers you end up with the long term Eichel center replacement. If we look at the Eichel trade packages they give you 3 to 4 very good players in return that make this team better. NYR trade package will include a combination of players Kakko, Chytil, Miller, Jones, Lundkvist, and Schneider. The LA trade package will include a combination of players, Byfield, Turcotte, Kaliyev, Kupari, Vilardi, Anderson-Dolan, Madden, Bjornfot, Spence, Clague and this years first which could be a top 10. The Ducks trade package could include, Zegras, Jones, Steel, Comtois, Lundestrom, Drysdale, and Dostal plus their pick which could be top 5. Any of these trades that includes 3 or 4 of these players on the list plus in the Ducks or LA's case this years first, you will be adding 4 very good young talent that can be on the roster this coming year or the following year. Thats with just the Trade of Eichel. If you add in Trades of Reinhart and Risto you could be adding 4 to 5 more young talented pieces to this team. For Example if the Wild want Reinhart and can swing a deal for Kahkonen and Boldy with a 1st. You could have your #1 goalie next year, a top line LW of the future, and a piece to try to make the Kraken take Skinner. A Risto trade might get you 2 B/C level prospects plus another piece. Add all these moves together with Granato who is a very good coach of young players and this team could turn it around next year. Yes they will not be a playoff team with all the young talent. However they will not be a bottom feeding team, they would likely be a bit higher in the standings. I would say around 8 to 10 spots higher with more young players adding to the team the following year. The good news is there are teams right now that are really wanting Eichel that may end up over paying for Eichel and if that occurs this team gets better quickly. If it could play out the way I would want things to Kings would trade for both Eichel and Risto in the same trade sending to Buffalo; Turcotte, Kaliyev, Kupari, Anderson-dolan, Spence and this years first. Then Reinhart to the Wild for Boldy, Kahkonen and a first. Then in the draft pick up Beniers, then the best D with LA's pick. If you look at the combination this team is totally different going forward.
I’m not a Buffalo Sabres fan, but I can feel your pain because I am a Canucks fan and I got into hockey in 2013 and from 2014-2019 was nothing but just pain (2015 is a semi exception)

Outside of coaching and figuring out what to do there, heading into the offseason: Sam Reinhart, Casey Mittelstadt, Rasmus Asplund, Rasmus Dahlin, Henri Jokiharju, William Borgen, Stefanos Lekkas, and a couple of non-roster guys, will be RFAs. Tobias Reider, Drake Caggiula, Riley Sheahan, Matt Irwin, Carter Hutton, Linus Ullmark, Michael Houser, Jake McCabe, and all 4 player on the Taxi Squad, are UFAs. Furthermore, there is the very real possibility that Jack Eichel gets traded, and I'm sure you'd love to see Jeff Skinner & Kyle Okposo get traded. Not to mention, the Seattle expansion draft All I can say is, I wish you and your Sabres the best of luck. Because next season, there is a very real possibility that this team is gonna get blown up this offseason and return next year potentially in the same situation they were in, but worse. At this rate, you gotta pray that the team gets sold to an owner that gives a damn (granted I think the Sabres got sacrificed so that the Bills could FINALLY be good again)
As a Flyers fan I understand how this year felt. The Flyers looked good but then they just started to play really bad. Not a fun season. I think all we can do is hope and stay loyal to our them and see how go. Not much else we can do. It’s out of our control. So just hope for a good season.
With so much contracts expiring after this season Buffalo's current roster can rejuvenate my Avs and fill the holes that will be created by Avs needing to shed salary due to the cap, biggest hopefuls are we ca have Ullmark and Reinhart. Edit: Spelling
Goalies getting hurt, Eichel not being physically right, Taylor Hall not putting forth any effort...and last place is what we get. At least Granato got the team playing better and Reinhart looked like a stud down the stretch.

Thanks for the content, this season was interesting because I was able to watch a lot of nhl games and hearing your thoughts after catching a Sabres was a treat. Hopefully the team corrects course sooner rather than later.
I think we'll be fringe playoffs next season...if we stay healthy. Rein had a major breakout season. Middie and Tage finally showed progress. It's been a hectic year for us all. Here's to next season...LGS!!!
Compared to previous drafts (Mcdavid, Eichel, Matthews, Dahlin, Hughes, Laf) this draft is definitely “meh”, but I think we’ve been spoiled with some incredible drafts in the past 5 or so years. And especially when you compare it to the next couple of years, it’s just not on that level. I have no doubt we’ll get a good player between 1-3, but we’re not getting an instant superstar.

There's a C you could pick that scored above .5 ppg in the 3rd best league in the world this season, at the age of 18. ;) He outscored Lucas Raymond and Alexander Holtz from last year's draft class, even though he's younger than them (not a full year tho). But we both know the Sabres would pass him over. ;)

I agree on a few points you make in this video. For starters having Covid-19 rip through the locker room would affect all teams in a negative way. From the best to the worst, alike. Secondly, having a soccer coach as acting head coach on a professional hockey team is not a winning strategy. And finally, goaltending injuries/issues would have a negative impact on any team. There are several other factors that don’t add up though. Why are so many roster players getting injured when they have very long off seasons year after year? If you win the Cup or even make the playoffs you play for a longer time period, meaning less off season time to recover from injuries. There is also the question of why so bad for so long with high draft picks? And of course, firing all of their scouting staff, trainers, and equipment staff. Why? What now? There management and ownership create so many of their own problems. Perhaps the darkest problem is that they don’t seem to have any real direction or identity. And it has remained that way since nobody seems to care enough to take charge and lead.

Sorry about the final death blow in the hands of my Pittsburgh Penguins. Just watch, we'll lose in the first round ......AGAIN. Look on the bright side, 4 more months until the Buffalo Bills start their season. Hopefully with a Super Bowl trip this time.
I have zero expectations for next season. This one killed my love for this team. 10 month break just to have a 15 win season with zero competitiveness. Now eichel is fighting a possible career long injury. Skinner looks to be useless for 6 more years. Zero marketability with free agency and no office or scouts for this upcoming draft. I really cannot look for anything positive for next year. Cozens and Quinn need to come through and be elite players for me to start getting excited again.
Painful as it is follow whatever team you hate the least that's in the playoffs and remind yourself hockey is a great game that's what I did all the years the Oilers have missed the playoffs and I still enjoyed watching other teams win the cup because I'm a hockey fan and so are you 😁
To be fair, and I say this as a Leafs fan, once Granato took over & Ullmark got healthy again, you guys did improve & you did have many injuries (including Eichel missing like half the season). I don't think you're as bad as your record is, but the organization needs some solid structure & investment to scouting to help take the next step. Keep Granato though, he's done an alright job so far.
As someone who is not a fan but at some point realised im more or less sympathetic to almost every team in east and central i did pick some hints of promise and progression in buffalo that things might improve...but if i was diehard fan and saw all that id be wanting the wicker man burning with all who have allowed the franchise sink so low post-hasek era
I think Coach Granato deserves next season to show what he can do, BUT Pegula's need to loosen the purse strings to make Buffalo respectable! Great Job Mel!!
Actually towards the end when Granato took over, they improved. If Eichel goes it's a blow, no doubt. I say clean trade. Eichel for Stamkos. Either way, I believe better days are ahead. Krueger is a good coach. But did not know how to handle his team
