The burned winding diagnosis

This one is about a diagnosis and repair of a residential gas furnace that the fan failed to come on. The diagnosis was not simple because there was an indication that the fan motor may have been subjected to 2 speed wires being energized at the same time. This would result in the motor burning up. This video is part of the heating and cooling series of training videos made to accompany my websites: www.graycoolingman.com and www.grayfurnaceman.com to pass on what I have learned in many years of service and repair. If you have suggestions or comments they are welcome.
If you are a homeowner looking to repair your own appliance, understand that the voltages can be lethal, the fuels are highly flammable and high pressures are used. Know your limits.

@@grayfurnaceman Hey I'm so glad your knee is doing well. After clearing up the infection in my wife's 1st knee with pic line and antibiotical spacer, then another new knee, 8 weeks later she had the 2nd knee replaced and that was almost 3 months ago. So a total of 5 surgerys for 2 knees, because the 1st one also busted open before the wound had healed and now she's ready for spring to get here! I can't slow her down! Lol. Hey guy, You take care and keep that wound clean and dry and she recommends always using stitches because it was the glue that had failed her the first time, is why it popped open. Good luck, keep us all posted and great diagnosis on that furnace. You have to look at the economy. 1200 is a lot cheaper right now than a new unit in this economy. If that heat exchanger holds out, just grin and bear the cost of the parts. Money don't grow on trees! Especially when hot dogs are a regular menu item. Just make sure they have a new working co detector in the house at least by the bedrooms and one by the furnace for redundancy! Take care! J Pol.

Well when you rip em apart like that you kinda always usually have to replace the parts you broke.

Is it possible or probable that a weak capacitor can fry the windings?

I have a comfortmaker furnace in my apartment, and the thing is a headache. It a 40 year old furnace, and the limit switch turns off at 120 degrees. It blows hard but doesn't warm up the apartment that much. The fan was full of dirt and the landlord didn't put the air filter in right place. I bought a 25 " filter but is a bit too long. It is so sooty. It over heats all the time , if it stays on very long. The air ducts don't blow that hard. It has a digital thermostat. I have to let it blow on fan for it cool off, then turn the burner back on. The heat pump doesn't work either. Just a headache. 😒. On the program thermostat if you go to 3 , it only has 2settings . O and 1. 0 the burner is turned on without the fan, 1 the fan and burner comes on. I'm wondering if the relay is burned out on zero, because it doesn't turn the fan on when the furnace warms up.

Sounds like you have multiple problems… it’s burns soot? That’s a major concern bc of the fuel/air ratio is not correct! Can’t remember to much fuel and not enough oxygen, or vice versa? You mentioned it doesn’t blow hard, you have a clogged evaporator coil. All that dirt on the blower wheel, it’s also downstream on the evap coil. Abt the limit switch… it could be tripping prematurely. On those furnaces, I believe it’s a high limit-fan control switch. It’s going to cost a real pretty penny to fix all of those problems!

Hello, and If I may ask. What is your opinion on oil fired boilers - cast iron vs steel. I'm planning on replacing my 32 yr old Burnham. Planning on 85,000 - 100,000 btu. unit w/ No Tankless.

Motor over heated, and high amp draw. Replace with universal motor and new capacitor and call it a day. Total cost estimated at just under $400. A new relay could even be installed. Still all parts and labor less than $450. If it’s an out of warranty with an ECM motor, install a universal PCM ADD A COUPLE OF RELAYS AND WALK AWAY. Save the customer some money and get them back up and running.

Hi there mate. I'm an apprentice refrigeration engineer. I've picked up an old 'email' motor by westinghouse. I've found that I'm missing the switch part of the centrifugal switch. It's a Syncrosnap style switch, and I'm having a hard time finding any information online on how to source parts and repair. The good news is that google has sent me your way - do you have any experience with the syncrosnap switches? Would you have an idea on the best place that I can source parts? My start and run windings are fine, and I'm currently push starting the motor. It's connected to an old Atlas Copco aircompressor in which I'm reluctant to let die. I'd love to repair it! Cheers. Jim.

I don't have a lot of info on centrifugal start switches. However, I did see that Amazon has switches that may work for your application. GFM

Yes, worth cherry picking...because...no furnace you replace it with will last 18 years...while this will go another several hundred thousand miles if repaired.
@Jon-hx7pe
@Jon-hx7pe Год назад
a new furnace should last 20 years if properly installed, sized and maintained. the old stuff from early 90s and before could last 30+ years - new stuff won't.

It's not unusual that you can smell a burned motor if you put your nose right on the coils....when it is cool.
